Lovely late Christmas pressie for everyone - club, player & supporters.
Everyone has a bit of breathing space now to just get on, play footie & score some more goals.
Doesn’t it also mean that if Villa are still interested & do come sniffing, the price has just gone up?

Very deserved - player of the season for me so far.
Let's hope he doesn't now stop running around like a 17-year-old or get injured in a bit of Blades Way fatalism.

I hope this doesn't come back to bite us down the line but he's not exactly a player who struggles to find a club if we wanted to sell at a later date.

Cracking news. He's become a bit of an icon. And who'd have thought that, even those who were chuffed when we signed him?

What he's shown this season IMO is how he's right up there with Glenn Murray and Daryl Murphy in the clever, canny, influential, reliable goalscorer stakes. Age no barrier, especially with fitness & commitment levels like his. He's been superb (& he'll continue to be).

As an aside, as an introvert/miserable fucker myself, got to say I like his strange, quirky personality - great to see how it's been embraced as part of a group of differing personalities all pulling in the same direction

Lets say he's now on £15k per week. Not many clubs at this level are going to pay this for someone his age, so we've got him for the duration of his contract. That's the good news.

However, if things don't go to plan for us in a years time then we will be stuck with an ageing overpaid player and he's not going to be daft enough to move on for a lot less than that. The United way of dealing with this is to extend it for another 2 or 3 years at a reduced wage, say £5k per week, a la Cresswell, Collins & Doyle.

Better get used to him, he'll be here for another 5 years at least, and somehow I don't think a 37 year old Leon will be quite as popular as he is now. Bananas bit of business by United if you ask me.

Yeah got to say he's surprised me this season.

Thought he was a good signing initially for League 1 despite wondering how he'd gel with Billy.

Did wonder if he'd be moved on this season though but his all round game, not just his goals, has been a real eye opener.

Bit of a stupid decision to give him such a long one, he'll be 35 wen it's over.
And all the better for the experience he can pass on to youngster's. The game is about much more than 90 minutes on the pitch.
Glad Chris and the boys understand this and are not such limited thinkers:confused:

Let’s just wait and see how this plays out before giving ourselves a slap on the back.

Mixed emotions.

Bit of a strange one for me, obviously he’s having a great season and deserves to be rewarded for that. However with a contract for next season I’m surprised we haven’t waited to see how he performs over the next 12 months, before starting to talk about a new deal.

At nearly 33, a two and a half year contract protects the player far more than the club as even if Villa did come knocking he isn’t going to be worth very much.

The new contract would improve the clubs bargaining position if a transfer was on the cards.

But even so, it’s wildly optimistic to think we could get £1m for him, which would not be enough to secure a suitable replacement.

A longer contract obviously gives us a better chance of a bigger fee, but an 18 month contract on a player nearing the end of his career already gave us that.

Anyway, it’s done now, hopefully it’ll prove to be a good decision.

Where’d you get five years and 37 from Snoots?

He's signed till 2020. My projection was that in a year or two's time and if we're not heading to the Prem the club will realise they've got an unaffordable player in the ranks and will renegotiate his contract. As with the three players I mentioned, the only way they would be able to make this attractive to an ageing player would be by extending his contract on a reduced wage.

So, this will take us to around 2022 when he will be 37.

If that was the case surely this just means we’d be in a better negotiating position to push for a better deal?
I don’t get Leon, I don’t understand how he’s delivered what he has, and I’m still not sure in his ability, but he’s delivered for us regardless. That’s why CW does what he does and I watch from the stands. He deserves his previous deal to be looked at and deserves to be rewarded. Nothing to grumble about here, in fact everyone’s pretty much done the right thing for us fans, Leon the club and the manager.

I think this sends out a great message to the whole squad (and potential signings in the JTW) and is typical of CW's masterful man management style.
'You're valued, you've worked hard and we're rewarding that'
Kinell, he's even got me thinking about taking my old Umbros out of the garage and dusting the f****rs off!

Doubt any of them will be on owt like £15k , if they,ve doubled Clarkes money and lost out on whatever fee we,d of got there's no way we,d get a fit proven goal scorer to suit the clubs set wage structure that's not gonna blow the team spirit ......onwards and upwards watching a realistically run club that you can relate to UTB

In two year’s time his contract will be up (or he’ll be in the last 6 months anyway)

In one years time it won't, I wasn't calculating to the nearest week. You only need to look at the examples I gave you to see how it works.
