I know that when John Pemberton ran our academy, he said that DDG was the best 16 year old he had ever seen anywhere. There were numerous reports of Manyoo watching him, so I wouldn't be surprised if Juve were keeping tabs too.

All before he broke into the first team squad, and all while he was a trainee. Although if Pembo rates him higher than John Pemberton Jr then he must of thought him some player, which makes it all the more strange that Bristol City haven't just offer him a contract and by all accounts weren't even interested. I mean you'd track the best ever 16 year old you'd seen right?

Aye, but then said 16 year old went and ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Gascoigne was never the same again afterwards, Shearer lost pace and had to completely revise his game. It's an injury with serious impact and 20 years ago most were finished because of it. I'd be sitting back and waiting to see the full impact before I made any move, be I working for Bristol City, Juventus, AC Milan or Raggy Arse Rovers.

I'm not ITK but I did have a chat with one of the Shirecliffe guys a couple of weeks ago about Diego (and Flo Cuvelier, among others). The verdict from the guy I was talking to was the same as others on this thread: De Girolamo is the most talented youth player United have brought through the ranks in recent memory. However, the injury was a massive setback at a fairly critical time in his development - it stopped him signing for Man U (and we were, apparently, in line for significant compensation).

The other insight I got that is because DDG is that good, it doesn't take much before people get on his back. It wouldn't surprise me if the weight of expectation has held him back as well.

Echoing Bert - this is a clean slate. It's up to De Girolamo to take his chance now.

Exactly my point.

I'm encouraged that Nigel is showing that he is beginning to make his mind up who he wants for the squad. Here's hoping for more news on others shortly.

Excellent news, now NA can concentrate on actual areas of need rather than doing anything daft like signing billy sharp

Just hope he gets on with the job we know hes got the talent.
Played in the right role i think he will make it.
Next 6 months is crucial for him.

Maxster?
was saying yes but noticed max writes for some other site

Couldn't give a flying about this. Shown absolutely nothing in a Blades shirt, ended up on the bench in league 2 last season. Thinks he's already made it. Stick him back in the U21s.

If his name was Dave Smith, no one would be bothered.

I don't think Andy Crosby was there either. His head look like its been stuck on in MS Paint. :)

Really? What do you mean?

Do we class playing for Italy at school boy level as an international call up now?

Here's a 19 year old who's played 20 times for Bradford without scoring a single goal, yet being signed by Swansea. We shouldn't only look at goal records when assessing young strikers, sometimes it takes time for them to get going at senior level.

I've seen encouraging things from Diego every time I've watched him and think it's great news that he's signed on.

Just don't understand the bile from some. He's a good prospect and Adkins has been impressed by his attitude.

All the rest is conjecture!

And we've got Reedy one season better, DCL coming through and the likes of Scougall, McNulty and a few of the other youngsters kicking on. UTB

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I was very much of the opinion that when we sacked Clough, it was a bit premature. Given his record at the Lane, and the need for stability in this club, I was unsure if it was the correct decision to move the club forward.

However, fancy foreign name or not, it speaks volumes that a young academy prospect that couldn't get away fast enough, has signed a new deal under Adkins.

I'm not saying that/his agent/his family were greedy for wanting away, I'm just saying it raises some serious questions about the turmoil going on behind the scenes under Clough's reign as manager.

Glad he's signed a new deal and will hopefully get a chance to show what he can do for us. Would have hated for him to go on prove himself elsewhere.

And hopefully now people won't be expecting miracles - it's staggering that people think a massive injury at a critical time in his development would be something that would have absolutely no impact on him.

I'd like to see him given a chance in the first team squad, he never got that with clough despite his obvious talent. And it's obvious once you fell out with clough there was no possible return.

Glad to see the lad has signed.

Time to put all shit behind him. Get his head down and train as hard as possible.
Make it impossible for NA to ignore him.
