Summer 2021, seems a relatively big commitment for another of our 30 somethings. Can't argue he's done well but it's a strange one given where the management want to be in that period.

He's technically superb and if he hadn't been mabe of balsa wood he'd have played lots of top division games.

Think of it terms of transfer fees. How much would a 25 year old with his attributes but clinical finishing cost? £20m

Seems likely his agent would’ve asked for the longer contract; with other clubs apparently sniffing around, the onus was probably on us to make an attractive offer.

He has but this is his level IMO, he's not clinical enough and that's where we need to improve.
Fully agree. I have been one of his biggest advocates since he arrived, but even I must agree that IF we get into the Prem, we might only get once chance per match and that needs to be taken... Is he the man to stick it away more times than not..? I'm not so sure

Maybe but we had the option of another year anyway as far as I know so we've basically extended it now for a further year on top of that, presumably on better wages as well.

Or look at it this, he's now worth a bit more.

If we get to the Prem we could ditch Didsy and pay off his contract with the money we lose down the back of the sofa.

The odds are we’ll be in this division again next year, and we’re correct in planning on that basis. For the consequences of doing things differently, go to S6.

Didsy is, in the current vernacular, a baller. Elegant and composed, makes the game seem effortless at times. He's one of the players I tell my lads to keep an eye on when we go to games and explain what a difficult art it is to receive the ball in space, have 2 or 3 options in your head and choose the right one, something which he does more often than not. Yes he misses chances which is why he is with us and not a Premier league side, but he is one of several technically excellent players we have at the moment, and one of the reasons why watching the Blades is a joy again, as opposed to the chore it had become under previous regimes.
A well earned new deal.

Are you sure about the option? I hadn’t heard that.

Yep, just checked, from SUFC;

Chris Wilder has bolstered his attacking options with the signing of David McGoldrick, following a successful trial period at the club.
The free-agent, formerly of Ipswich Town, has put pen-to-paper on an initial one-year deal at Bramall Lane, although there is a view to an extension.

Also says that in Foxy's thread so must be true :)

So were definitely going up then are we? Tying Didsy down for another few years would be worth it should it not happen then eh?

I’d agree if he was the type of player who’s game is mainly about pace and getting in behind. His qualities are more about intelligence of dropping deep and linking up play though. You may lose a yard of pace but you never lose your footballing brain.

I know we're big on (quite rightly) rewarding players who play well, and it seems as though Tufty doesn't like to have players who are in the last year of their contract. So, should we go up, and even if we don't, we'll have Billy (about to sign a further deal), Leon, Didsy, Ched and Washington all under contract beyond next season, with, presumably, Madine as well. OK, things will change, one or two may move on but that's a huge chunk of the squad when money is as big a deal as it is and either way, we still need to improve in that area.

As mentioned, we already had an option to extend for next season so why not see where we are in 4 months time?

thoroughly deserved and i'm sure has quite rightly earned a pay rise
He is a joy to watch and has scored 10 already and assisted on many also
sure he has missed a few chances but plenty of strikers do that , he has never hiden /sulked
the way he has come back after the short spell when he seemed to miss quite a few chances and of course a big penalty has been excellent

Vital part of our team / squad regardless of what league we are in,

our front 2 would cost a team millions !

"A view to an extension" doesn't necessarily mean we had the ability to unilaterally impose an extra year on his contract.

In any case, I'm just quibbling now. I think he's earned the deal and if other teams are interested I think we may have been under pressure to get something signed. Fair play to Didsy, who probably feels he hasn't had quite the career (or earnings) his talent deserves. But I do see why people would ask whether this length of contract makes sense for a player of his age.

Fair enough, it does seem strange wording.

I'm not saying it's not deserved and I'm not saying he's not done well this season but he's not going to get any better and if we DID go up (and just as much so if we don't) then we'd surely be looking to improve in that position. What this does probably mean is Leon/Conor/Ched will be on their way this Summer.

I think/hope you're right, and that Clarke, Washington, and Evans will all move on this summer. Assuming we're in the Championship again next year, I'd be delighted to have Didsy continuing as one of our main options, alongside Billy--and perhaps Tyler Smith, if his loan at Donny works out. We'd then need one or two fresh faces. But with promotion still a possibility, and the uncertainty over the ownership, there are too many variables to say much at this point. In context, getting Didsy tied down looks like good business to me.

He’s earned it and I’m all for rewarding players that have produced. I’ve no issue with his age. He’s at his peak and seems a naturally fit lad. He’s technically very decent as well so if we moved to the next level he would be a useful option.

Best value signing in years. Especially when you see what Derby paid for his comparatively ineffectual mate.
