I think you make a very valid point about the change in the level of day to day application and professionalism that is required these days. Yes, those players went on the piss but they weren’t so obscenely paid to dedicate their entire lives to the game and that was a reflection of the industry as a whole. I don’t think it’s as black and white as trying and not trying. I think it’s about matching or exceeding the levels of dedication and professionalism of your peers to gain every advantage possible. So whilst players might be trying to some degree, we still often seem outworked by the opposition which is really disappointing.
There’s been plenty of talk of the likes of DdG, McNulty, Baxter etc living a lifestyle which is not conducive to being a successful professional footballer. Coutts’ lack of movement in games suggests he is not as fit as he ought to be. Flynn lacks bravery in 50/50 challenges. Adams is a bit too languid for my liking, has already been disciplined once and looks like he might be carrying a bit more weight than he should be. There’s been rumours of McGahey scrapping in town. I think it’s perfectly justified to question the commitment of some of these players. There are some (notably Sharp, Brayford, JCR, Basham and Collins) who really seem to care and look passionate about the game when they are playing but they should be the rule rather than the exceptions.
So whilst physical conditioning in Bassett’s day wasn’t what it is now, those players, comparative to their peers, were harder working, braver, more passionate etc. in my opinion.
There’s also the team spirit. Bassett’s sides and Warnock’s seemed to have a real camaraderie which helped the team to be more than the sum of it’s parts. I don’t see that when I look at this group. I see individuals rather than a team.
It’s also worth noting that Bassett’s squad was a cheaply assembled rag tag bunch punching above it’s weight because of their guts and spirit. Our current lot are better paid than most of their opponents but so often come up short and I don’t believe ability is the reason
Good post. Cheers.
