I think you make a very valid point about the change in the level of day to day application and professionalism that is required these days. Yes, those players went on the piss but they weren’t so obscenely paid to dedicate their entire lives to the game and that was a reflection of the industry as a whole. I don’t think it’s as black and white as trying and not trying. I think it’s about matching or exceeding the levels of dedication and professionalism of your peers to gain every advantage possible. So whilst players might be trying to some degree, we still often seem outworked by the opposition which is really disappointing.

There’s been plenty of talk of the likes of DdG, McNulty, Baxter etc living a lifestyle which is not conducive to being a successful professional footballer. Coutts’ lack of movement in games suggests he is not as fit as he ought to be. Flynn lacks bravery in 50/50 challenges. Adams is a bit too languid for my liking, has already been disciplined once and looks like he might be carrying a bit more weight than he should be. There’s been rumours of McGahey scrapping in town. I think it’s perfectly justified to question the commitment of some of these players. There are some (notably Sharp, Brayford, JCR, Basham and Collins) who really seem to care and look passionate about the game when they are playing but they should be the rule rather than the exceptions.

So whilst physical conditioning in Bassett’s day wasn’t what it is now, those players, comparative to their peers, were harder working, braver, more passionate etc. in my opinion.

There’s also the team spirit. Bassett’s sides and Warnock’s seemed to have a real camaraderie which helped the team to be more than the sum of it’s parts. I don’t see that when I look at this group. I see individuals rather than a team.

It’s also worth noting that Bassett’s squad was a cheaply assembled rag tag bunch punching above it’s weight because of their guts and spirit. Our current lot are better paid than most of their opponents but so often come up short and I don’t believe ability is the reason

Good post. Cheers.

Well, what I have learned from reading this thread is:-

3. Is there a level we can sink to that sees BTL allow criticism?
Think youll find I am very critical , but in a constructive not blatantly destructive manner
all teams lose games , look at Chelsea just now

we have fans that lump everything thats gone wrong previous to them coming onto the current crop
this is unfair
the short comings of the current crop are mainly lack of fitness of our best players and lack of experience of the younger ones
I think we can over come both

Just coming in and saying as useless as ever adds absolutely zero to us correcting the situation
weve had 2 really unacceptable displays , at gillingham and crewe, in preperation and commitment

the job Adkins needs to do is eradicate performances like that
we started to rectify it after gillingham but have stumbled a bit recently
I dont think its a massive failure but one we can put right

One Adkins needs to put right and soon ,

Well, what I have learned from reading this thread is:-

1. Avatars may or may not be offensive depending on the intent behind the avatar but to be on the safe side, it is better to be offended by an avatar in case there is an offensive intent. Maybe.

2. Pete has been appointed as a Judge. Maybe.

3. Blade Too Long likes to use the logic of people he doesn’t agree with to rubbish their opinions but has a hissy fit when people do it to him (player who didn’t get promotion cannot be missed ergo we didn’t miss Borbokis, Fjortoft, Holdsworth, Stuart, Devlin, Bent, Brown, Beattie, Walker, Naughton, Lowton, Maguire, Murphy, McDonald, Blackman, Quinn etc).

4. Nigel Adkins needs to have his xmas party today if we are to have any chance of winning tomorrow.

5. Despite having polar opposite views, barny and BTL are both equally ridiculous.

What I hope to learn from future threads is

1. What is the real meaning behind Sitwell’s Avatar?

2. Will barny continue to be offended when we find out?

3. Is there a level we can sink to that sees BTL allow criticism?

4. Is there a manager we could appoint that barny would be willing to give more than a few weeks?

5: When does Pete get paid for the quasi-judicial role he's recently taken on?

Are you totally ignorant?
posting this nonsense on a night like this?
FFS get a perspective.

I'd add Colchester at home to that list of unacceptable performances. And although I wasn't there, by all accounts, Vale would also make the list. Millwall was also poor but not as atrocious as those.
