My West Ham mate

That’s fantastic SB! It’s a real education for me (and others) to learn something about this. I think you’re an amazing bloke, not just for this, but for your encyclopaedic knowledge of the Blades. 👍

You should try to get yourself on Mastermind. Specialist subject “Sheffield United FC”. And don’t worry if your general knowledge isn’t up to scratch. You can do as dem Blades do, and “pass”, “pass”, “pass”.😀

I’ve used my thumb to shave my face many times, but unless my nails are long and finely honed it doesn’t give a close shave. 🤔

The Sheffield sign I get. But I can’t for the life of me see a letter “U” in the picture below!😲

I don’t think I’d be much good at this!

Vowels I believe are fingers on your hand, ie A is your thumb, E is second finger - and U is therefore the little finger.

Have I vaguely got that correct Silent Blade ?

Casual brag that I think Silent and I have played each other at chess a few years ago (or at least, our respective teams did). Needless to say I lost.

Sign for Blades is using your thumb to "shave" your face.

Sign for Sheffield is similar to the below photo but not exactly the same. The below photo is the sign for "F". Instead of two fingers laying down on the other two fingers, move both your hands sideways and the two fingers slightly rubbing each other to make it look like you are using knifes and forks to eat your meal.

United is just using the letter U as seen below

So has everyone else just had a go at that, just in case you meet a deaf person and want to tell them who you support? Or just me?

This Saturday I will be parking my car at my mate’s house this Saturday and then travel with him to East London by tube. He is a Hammers season ticket holder for many years. I went with him to watch West Ham getting beaten 6-0 at Oldham in the 1990 League Cup semi! He has been my room mate twice (in 1994 and 2018) staying in a hotel when we played in international deaf chess tournaments. He is knowledgable about football. Spoke to him on Facetime last Sunday discussing how we feel about our respective teams this season so far.

He says apart from playing against Man City, they have been playing well in home games. He is disappointed with Fabianski’s injury as the reserve keeper is dodgy in dealing with corners (despite making good saves at Everton last week). Right back Fredericks is excellent at going forwards but average in defending. The two centre backs have been very good especially Diop who is quick and strong. He is hoping that Aaron Creswell will be back from injury as the reserve left back struggled at Everton.

Lanzini is hit and miss and so is Felipe Anderson (always impressed me on MOTD) , Yarmelinko is excellent with the ball, left footed but always plays on the right. Rice excellent at breaking up attacks and making good passes. My mate is a huge fan of Mark Noble but he was disappointed with him last Saturday. Fornals not making an impression. Haller is a good signing as he is good at holding the ball up as the lone striker (they usually play the 4-1-4-1 formation)

Must say I have the same view as your pal about their players, I've always rated Noble but he is slowing these days. Slightly disagree about Rice who looks just steady to me in the easiest role on the pitch.

As regards Chess, my 9 year old grandson is keen and I play with him every weekend. Trouble is I have secondary school memory of half hearted games back then and its hard for me to develop his skills very much, not that he is thirsting to get that good. It's just that when kids show an interest it's good to go with it as fast as they may choose, given opportunity.

Any ideas would be appreciated Silent and thanks for this thread.

There are 5 vowels in our alphabet. When you open one hand, the other hand is clenched apart from the index finger which is pointing at one of the digits in the open hand. Pointing at the thumb is A, the index finger is E, the middle finger is I, the ring finger is O and the smallest finger is U

Would the below link be helpful assuming this is your grandson's area. Contact the secretary and he/she will advise you on junior chess.

The smallest finger looks nothing like me!😲

I get it though now - thanks!👍
