Thought we were pretty languid and slow today, against a AVFC who were seemingly happy to either lump it long or try to feed Grealish so he could squeeze one in. That said, Villa played a lot better than I have seen them play before the shutdown. We just managed to facilitate that. Having Jack and Flecky out hasn't helped (strange how they are out two most revered and valued players, contract-trigger fans) but the replacements were passable and poor in that order.
Henderson 9/10: Simply excellent, and unflappable. If he's acrobatically turning McGinn's strike round the post one minute, he's plucking a dangerous cross off the toes of Samatta or flicking out a hand to deny Davis. We must sign this kid. Playing without him now is unthinkable.
Baldock 7/10: Did his typical 'full of energy' act but was seemingly unable to penetrate until late on in the 2nd half when he had Lunny over with him, and they could link with Bash and Didsy.
Basham 8/10: Another heroic performance and at times had Grealish tucked in his sock
Egan 6.5/10: Seemed to be on his heels a few times by the long punts and the spectre of a big centre forward leaning down on him. In mitigation, he was without his wingman and the communication seemed to be wanting
Robinson 7/10: Thought he did well for a first outing in Jacks boots. Some timely interceptions and interventions
Stevens 6/10: Thought he was pretty average today
Lundstram 6.5/10: First half was passable, improved when he went right in the second but still not really at his early season best. The second half of the MUFC game at home seems to have been his trigger fo slow descent, although he was 'okay' today
Norwood 6.5/10; Typical 'does what he does' outing. Played in the hole in front. Great goal however.
Berge 3/10: I thought he was pretty piss poor to be honest. First game back or not, there's no excuse as a PL footballer to look as unfit and disinterested as that when the club whose shirt you wear has broken its fucking transfer record on you. When I looked at his YT showreel, I thought he reminded me of Currie, drifting past players, making the space and basically being able to run the game. Currie may have had some middling games in red and white, but even in those he 'imposed'. Villa didn't even seem aware of his presence or scared by his ability. He was, today, barely at Championship level and that is bad. I pray Bruges haven't had our kecks down on this and he turns out to be a fucking waste of resources. Look at his contemporaries - look next match for example at Shelvey - and you'll see someone you wouldn't like to be up against in attack and in defence for ninety minutes. That is because he is Premier League standard. Berge - so far - isn't.
McBurnie 6/10: No real opportunities apart from the header from the corner and the intercepted pass. Really, he should have been a lot more imposing on what looked a shaky defence. He did graft though and endeavoured to win back possession
Sharp 6/10: Again, and I have written this before, this is only because the usual goal supply from MF and the R and LWBs was absent today. Last season, the bloke was supplied and he punished Villa hard. It's what Billy does. Today he had to go looking for it and that isn't his game
McGoldrick 4/10: Not a lot of chance to do anything TBH
Freeman 6/10: A far better LMF option than Berge IMHO. He actually looks like he is fighting for the call up
Mousett 4/10: Not really in the game
Like I say, as a game it was poor. Positives are 'we are back' and we didn't concede, but we also failed to attack properly and made Villa look threatening, when really they are far from it and on this showing, look likely to drop with Norwich.
The goal? Shocking, shoddy shambles of a decision, by one of the world's top refs. However, if the tech fails him and he gets no notification, what the tapdancing fuck appeared on those bellends' screens at Stockley? Did any of them not see it - the ball clearly over the line - and think 'the Hawkeye has failed. That's a goal.' Why not get the ref to check the monitor? Why not have the moral courage to buzz the ref and raise a concern? If this were Liverpool, Klopp would have dropped his kecks, forced Oliver's face between the cheeks of his arse and shat in his mouth. Then the players would have taken a knee, Sky TV would have melted down, Jamie Carragher would have run out of spittle and Boris Johnson would have put the nation back into lockdown. So why has everyone already stopped talking about our lost two points? Why is it suddenly 'Hawkeye has apologised, chin up, shit happens'? Has anyone made a count how many points we have lost through Lundstram's ten-foot foot, the ref dispossessing Fleck and now the Villa keeper sliding the ball back into play with a look on his face like he's shut his dick in his wife's underwear drawer and the whole world - and I mean 'planet earth' sat watching and thinking 'aw, that's shit that is.'
Typical United. Not 'typical United' as in four seasons ago, but typical of what we end up with.
