...thought I'd use it to thank Foxy and Linz for putting together a community where I've made some lifelong friends and which has probably kept me in touch with United despite not living in Sheffield for well over 20 years now. We're lucky to have this forum.

Who knows what will happen in the time before my 20,000th post which, at the same rate, will be in 2041. Who knows, it might be celebrating another FA Cup success.

Well done let us know when you get to 50,000. :)

Hi Balham - do you live in Teddington? I worked at a place on Waldegrave Road in the late 1960s. Lovely area.

Agreed, always good to have a reminder what this forum brings, in between some of the nonsense that some people seem to take pleasure in rather than have reasoned discussions, there are many that prefer to disrupt threads and get themselves and others banned. However, as you highlight, the forum is a community which has run and run. Like you, i've met many decent people through this Forum on our travels and at home games over the years. I've also met you :D

It's perhaps particularly important for those exiles and semi exiles amongst us. It doesn't have to just be about the topic of the Blades, it's clear we can chat about any old bollocks. Here's to your next 10k, you might catch us pro's eventually.

At current posting rate of 10k every 16 years it'll be a close run thing between 50k and death. That's if I live to 105.

I do - I can see the houses on Waldegrave Road from the loft of my house. It's still a lovely (if eye-wateringly expensive) place to be. Who did you work for, if you don't mind me asking?

I worked as a trainee laboratory chemist at the Paint Research Station for a 6-month placement from Sheff Poly. The PRS became the Paint Research Association in 1971 and it moved to the Coatings Technology Centre in 2005 and from 2015 it’s been based in Melton Mowbray. The PRS building was just near the library on the same side of the road. I lived at a shared house on Clarence Road. My Friday afternoon routine - when United were playing at home - was to leave work at 2, catch bus to Chiswick flyover. Hitch hike from the M1 slip road and I’d usually be back in Stannington at my parent’s home for about 6.30. Sunday I was at Tinsley slip road for 4.30 pm and back in north London for about 9 then walk to nearest tube, then to Waterloo and then train back to Teddington for about 10.30. Happy days. A few great pubs there and some great work mates. And useful work too. No more fading motorway signs anymore are there?

No, but what about fading red seats at the Lane ?

I had no idea that even existed. From your description I think the PRS site was flattened and is now the HQ of Richmond Council's arms-length social housing provider. We have friends on Clarence Road - not sure there are many house shares left there :)

I suspect the pub scene may have changed a bit since you were here.

It was 93 Clarence Road. A gang of used to go in the Kings Head at lunchtime - there was a courtyard out back. At night it was the Clarence Hotel (now The Park) they had a cellar bar disco most nights. There were a couple of pubs down by the arc studios by the river. Paint fades with time and weather. Really good paint costs more.

Yes that’s where PRS was. It was a 2-storey modern building opened in 1936 I think. There was a large open area at the side where painted items were left outside to see how they were affected by weather and time.

It's a bit like space travel, the technology to get to the nearest next galaxy will never catch up as it's moving increasingly further away (or perhaps it's not like that at all, but y'know what I mean).
