Apaz it's Mr Jones 53rd Birthday today and a tweet was issued to celebrate his contribution to World football.

Quite a few Blades incidents in there.

Enjoy

Fleck's a wanker, but then we're all fucking wankers at the Lane.

YHIHF ;)

That punch on the arsenal player was right in front of me. Not seen it since I was there at the time as a young'un. :D

Thought he was crap then, and I wasn’t wrong!

Mindlessly flying in on an opponent who has their head in the game, and who has no chance to set themselves, is so cowardly.

Seems strange that he's fondly remembered as a 'no-nonsense footballer' when the dictionary defines nonsense as "foolish or unnacceptable behaviour".

Vinnie Jones was the very defintion of a 'nonsense footballer'.

Big bad Billy would have had him for breakfast. As would Mick Harford and a few others of that era.

Billy was out of the same mould as Vinnie. They were both of the opinion that a bit of thuggishness would make up for their limited ability. For hard but decent players you need to go back to the likes of Hunter, Bremner, Smith and Souness. Harford is a nobody in the grand scheme of things.

I like a good challenge but some of his assaults required charges being filed.

Do that in a bar and you would be in court why should the pitch be any different no intention of playing the ball just one intention and that’s to harm. Not football it’s UFC.

I love the way most of his victims get straight up instead of rolling around on the ground as if mortally wounded.

Proper footballers
I bet at the time we were moaning about players rolling around pretending to be injured and in "my day" they wouldn't have done it, makes you wonder what it will be like in ten years.

Andy Carroll is the most over-hyped and over-rated player this millenium.

Anyway, moving on, I'll tell you a little story about Billy Whitehurst.

At the tail end of his career, he was playing in Hong Kong. In one game, which turned out to be his last, he put in a tackle against one of the local players. He went in knee high, went straight through him and smashed his knee to bits. The players career was finished in an instant. The word went out and Billy was on the next plane out before he ended up as one of the ingredients in a bowl of noodle soup.

Make of that what you will. He never was and never will be a hero of mine.

Not a hero of mine either, I was just making the point that Jones wasn't even a real hard man in his day, never mind the seventies, just as I'm sure the examples of hard men you gave aren't heroes of yours. Unless you're a secret Revie fan, in which case....

Bert thought that he was a complete twat the minute he first clapped eyes on him.

Not a fan of many of the so called hard men with the possible exception of Smith & Souness who were on the receiving end as often as they dished out. Seeing as they had nowt to do with Revie, can you absolve me..? ;)

Souness was a gold plated radge. Full on mental. As you say, took it as well as gave it out. Good player too.

He was a nasty twat but he was part of the side that went on the run after beating Forest at home in December 1990. A limited footballer but he would chase, drive and cajole as if his life depended on it. By no stretch was he our 'star' player, but he made a contribution to us staying up and to pretend otherwise is incorrect.

He could take it as well. We played Palace at home and Geoff Thomas, Eric Young and Andy Thorn took it in turns to kick him up in the air. He knew he had to stay on the pitch so he just took it all.

I'm not going out on a limb to defend him as he was a knobhead, but he was our our knobhead and he helped keep us up.

Certainly not the worst player we ever signed, was a grade A twat at times with a look at me complex, helped keep us up and we didn’t lose money on him when he was sold did we ?..he didn’t piss on the club like “unseen” Dean that’s for sure..
