Records speak for themselves.
If Greaves was playing today it would be the 2019 version of him, no smoking or drinking and super fit.
Are you suggesting that Don Bradman wasn't comparable with today's cricketers?
Things change, players and cricketers for instance have evolved, whether he drinked, smoked or shagged hookers all the time, it’s irrelevant as players are naturally fitter and better athletes now, I thought that much was obvious.

Are you trying to tell me that mobile phones aren’t better than the brick ones they first brought out? 😁

My goalscoring record "at any level" stands at 2; one in a 3rd and 4th play-off House match at High Storrs in 1979, when Stephenson House (my team) beat Carey House 3-1. I scored the third and I would have netted the second as well if Phil Storey hadn't stretched out his lanky leg and sliced it into his own net.

My second was for Exiled Internet Blades v Sheffield Internet Blades about 15 years ago. I was in goal for the Exiles but had made it quite clear beforehand that if we got a penalty I was willing to step up and take it as it could be my last chance to score for a team that in any way represented Sheffield United (the bones were already creaking).

We got a penalty and even though Rob who used to be SE1Blade was on a hat-trick, I'm pleased to say that he still bears a grudge to this day, just because my teammates started chanting "Greenwich, Greenwich, Greenwich" (this is all true, sadly) meaning I denied him the chance to take the matchball home by legging it from my area to the opposite one, giving Lun in goal the eyes, and sticking it in the left corner whilst he went the other way. I didn't milk it, instead ran as I hard as I could back to my goal - arms raised, granted - before Rob could get me and give me a good twatting.

I believe Wapping Blade was playing for the Exiles that day too.

Wasn't asking you. I knew yours would be impeccable.
Was asking the other one. The one with no name.

Greaves would have evolved. Even better than he was in 1965.

To compare someone from years ago is not really a good barometer of a goal scorer, you’ll always get those from the older generation saying theirs were the best and those from the newer generation saying theirs were the best. It can cause to many arguments and it can’t be proved either way.
.

It can if they do this.

I know, I was just joining in. I thought maybe I could keep the thread lively whilst we wait for RC to post again, with hopefully everybody else adding their moments of goalscoring glory! Whilst I'm here, my top score at cricket was 55 not out v Sheffield Collegiate Juniors.

Bert does have a name, by the way - it's Bert and he's a legend!

Bert does, he saw him play.
Simply the greatest British goalscorer that ever lived.
Left foot, right foot, if the ball came anywhere near him in the box.. bang goal.
There'll never be another Jimmy Greaves. Amen.
Remember when Greaves, and my personal favourite, Denis Law, played, they were hacked and kicked to death and played on pitches like the Somme

Bert doesn’t and can’t possibly know whether he’d do the same now, it’s impossible to say.

Not old enough to see any of those mentioned, probably most natural I have seen was Rush, Shame he was well past it when he signed on loan for us

More waiting is required.

My post was more aiming at the absurdity of the off-topicness. Why this thread has turned into who was the best attacker who was a finisher but wasn't a striker is distracting.

Agree I’ve never known a player get caught off side as much as Edwards, he was always making runs past their last man.

Must say Sharp does remind me of Edwards, although Sharp works harder and has a better all round game.
Always used to make me smile how Edwards would be having s poor game because he’d hardly touched the ball.
I’d hear some of our fans stood around saying that he had been poor and needed substituting.
Then bang.....one chance...one goal...he lived for goals, hardly ever passed to anyone....but what a great goal poacher.

Too true. January 16, 1982 away to Rochdale in the fourth division. Crap game, fucking freezing. I was leaning on a crush barrier (hardly needed in the 3,966 crowd...) at a cold, foggy Spotland. Near the end of the game which was destined for a 0-0 draw, a Blade had a rant at 'King' Edwards - 'lazy', 'useless' etc. We won 1-0 with a late goal...

How many goals would Billy Sharp score if he played upfront for man city ? 30+ easy.
Lay off the drugs

Not necessarily. The bulk of City's goals are scored by breaking down the wings and crossing for (usually Sterling) to knock in, and Raheem misses his fair share. We'll never know. Like Greaves for England, Billy has been denied the chances to show his true worth at the top level. Like Edwards, Billy gets flagged for offside too much because he's too quick for the lino. to catch up. But we should be enjoying living Blades history with Sharp and nobody wll cheer louder than me when he gets his first-ever PL goal.

Well a month has passed since the excitement of an incoming striker for big money in United terms...I must say I’m totally not arsed any more.
It’s been a hugely drawn out process, I just hope whoever we get is worth it in the end.
Worryingly the current record transfer holder looks to be several weeks away from being anywhere near the match-day squad, so the next striker we sign (whoever it is) best be on the money!!
We need to start the season with a bang, no games to waste giving the others a head start!

It sounds like McBurnie is fairly nailed on now then. Top work RC. What a transfer window it's been. Anything more on the horizon before we close up shop and get ready to put our big boy pants on for the PL?

I’d like a Bash cover but really happy with the business done so far. Best and most enjoyable window in recent years....hopefully the season will match 😂
