Most pointless Blades game attended?

Where do you start with all the play off disasters.

The most infuriating being Burnley Huddersfield Yeovil and Swindon games

wasn't it last home game? pretty sure the last game was Cambridge away when it really was bloody cold!
 
When we played frechville,won 9 nil I think I also seem to remember one of theirs full on charge at Wayne Allison and bounced off em and landed on floor chief didn't budge 😂😂

I didn’t go but was there a mid season friendly against Everton as compensation for Howard Kendall fucking off to join them, masquerading as the One 2 One cup or something?

Similarly there was a pre season game against Forest that was billed as The Capital One cup. Think it was at the lane but could be wrong.

Also the Steel City cup against the pigs which ran for a couple of years.
 
06/01/2007. FA Cup 3rd Round. Swansea City (H).

3-0 home defeat to League 1 Swansea in the cup, while we were in the middle of our battle for Premier League survival. Their fans were utterly insufferable afterwards as well.

Interesting looking back at the teamsheets though. Swansea had Adebayo Akinfenwa up front that day!

That was such an odd game, back when Swansea were perennial league 2 fodder.

They filled the entire lane end and the atmosphere from their side was like a play off/cup semi final.

On the other hand we only had the South Stand open which wasn’t even full and there wasn’t a peep out of our fans all game.

On the subject of FA cup games against lowly opposition- I remember the tie against the now defunct Rushden and Diamonds being a far more spicy affair than anticipated.

May 1990 post promotion friendly v Genoa. Most of squad and crowd still half cut from the previous weekend's events at Filbert Street.

The play-offs and 3 pts for a win were massive turning points in the game - for the better. No wonder, crowds deserted the game towards the end of seasons back in the day. So many nonsense games.
 
One strange match was Grimsby away (in a cup?) on September 11th, the September 11th. Understandably, everyone's mind was elsewhere.
 
United v Barnet in the cup a few years ago.

Think they only opened 1 maybe 2 stands, we got either free or cheap tickets so thought why not. Come kick off there was a queue still trying to get in so we said we'd give it 10 and grab a quick pint. We got in, we were 1 down and it stayed that way.

Not only did we get knocked out to Barnet I managed to miss the only entertaining few seconds within the entire match.
 
It turned out pointless but for me was the Derby away match in 2008. Landed at 07:00am at Luton after a week away with a group of mates in Ibiza, hanging like anything. Got to the match which ended Derby's and the English leagues record for the number of matches without defeat with them beating us 2-1 with Rob Hulse getting the winner for them

Without victory you mean? That was their 37th game since their previous league win against Newcastle. Absurd that a team could go that long without winning a match.

3 points for a win started in 1981-82 and play-offs wouldn't have made any difference because we were at the bottom end of the table and that season, it was only because there were some really poor teams below teams, that we weren't relegated ourselves.

Wow, if ever there was a game where two managers and two teams were trying everything possible to not go through to the next round, this was it.

It was the most dismal, boring match that I've witnessed. I left before the penalty shoot out happened as I was too bored to stay and no longer cared who won.

Best away end I've ever seen at bramall lane by far, they were absolutely magnificent. The kop was open, I'm absolutely certain I was on it at the front unless my memory has lost the plot.

Sorry, I was talking generally, those two changes in the 80s transformed negative football for the better. Gradually, teams started to be more ambitious away from home, with an extra two points on the table. Most clubs have something to play for after their FA Cup exit now. Before the play-offs, too many teams had absolutely nothing to play for weeks, even months.

Yeah I’m sure it was too. Pretty sure I was just in my normal spot at the time.
 
Does anyone remember we played Burton first game of the season, but it was the League Cup? As in the League Cup fixture was the first proper game we kicked off with? That was pointless.

Remember the League cup doing two legs for the 1st round. I went to a very pointless one of those at Darlington. Marcelo or Saunders scored. Can’t remember.

Also WBA H in 1977, Swindon away 1978, Leeds H in 1980 and 81 and Birmingham H in 82.

I went to the Everton game (think we lost 3-1). It was to open the John Street Stand. I think Bobby Charlton did the official opening?
