wasn't it last home game? pretty sure the last game was Cambridge away when it really was bloody cold!Think it was Leicester at the Lane, last match of the season. We had to win by 5 to avoid relegation.
I turned up thinking “Yes, we can do this !” Think it ended 2-2.
Oh how I believed in the Blades in my youth.
Not sure of the year.
Licks windows he licks them all dayI suppose it’s pointless attending any friendly game as the result is pointless.
So, in terms of a competitive 1st team game, it would be Hartlepool away in the JPT. It was freezing, I can’t even remember if we won or lost, but I remember their keeper was called Flinders.
That was such an odd game, back when Swansea were perennial league 2 fodder.06/01/2007. FA Cup 3rd Round. Swansea City (H).
3-0 home defeat to League 1 Swansea in the cup, while we were in the middle of our battle for Premier League survival. Their fans were utterly insufferable afterwards as well.
Interesting looking back at the teamsheets though. Swansea had Adebayo Akinfenwa up front that day!
Briefly played for that lot, might explain his reception...Licks windows he licks them all day
I was there, 0-0 if I remember correctly?Sensing a general lack of enthusiasm surrounding tomorrow's night 1925 Cup Final replay.
What was yours?
I'll start.
May 1990 post promotion friendly v Genoa. Most of squad and crowd still half cut from the previous weekend's events at Filbert Street.
All suggestions welcome, unless it's Warnock/Cornwall/Tractor related.
Swindon away 2nd leg, only about 400 botheredYeovil away in May 2013.
Has there ever been a group of fans less enthused about the second leg of a play off semi final?
And we even went there with a 1-0 lead!
Dark times.
The play-offs and 3 pts for a win were massive turning points in the game - for the better. No wonder, crowds deserted the game towards the end of seasons back in the day. So many nonsense games. The end of the 1984-85 season was pretty pointless, almost literally. After beating Palace on the 30th March to pretty much guarantee safety in a poor old 2nd division, we drew 3 and lost 6 of the last 9 games, scoring just 4 goals. Two of those goals were in the final game, a 2-2 draw with Huddersfield in which Paul Smith scored his one and only senior goal for the Blades.
Without victory you mean? That was their 37th game since their previous league win against Newcastle. Absurd that a team could go that long without winning a match. It turned out pointless but for me was the Derby away match in 2008. Landed at 07:00am at Luton after a week away with a group of mates in Ibiza, hanging like anything. Got to the match which ended Derby's and the English leagues record for the number of matches without defeat with them beating us 2-1 with Rob Hulse getting the winner for them
When D Bassett did his impression of a wank referee! Still laugh when I think about it! Of course Dave and 3 players got sent off . Battle of Bramall(wba)came closest to thatThe Udinese game was fantastic!!
3 points for a win started in 1981-82 and play-offs wouldn't have made any difference because we were at the bottom end of the table and that season, it was only because there were some really poor teams below teams, that we weren't relegated ourselves. The play-offs and 3 pts for a win were massive turning points in the game - for the better. League Cup 2004
Sheffield United 0 - 0 Watford
(Watford 4-2 on penalties)
Wow, if ever there was a game where two managers and two teams were trying everything possible to not go through to the next round, this was it.
It was the most dismal, boring match that I've witnessed. I left before the penalty shoot out happened as I was too bored to stay and no longer cared who won.
Was there, great game of football.Swindon away 2nd leg, only about 400 bothered
Best away end I've ever seen at bramall lane by far, they were absolutely magnificent. The kop was open, I'm absolutely certain I was on it at the front unless my memory has lost the plot. That was such an odd game, back when Swansea were perennial league 2 fodder.
They filled the entire lane end and the atmosphere from their side was like a play off/cup semi final.
On the other hand we only had the South Stand open which wasn’t even full and there wasn’t a peep out of our fans all game.
On the subject of FA cup games against lowly opposition- I remember the tie against the now defunct Rushden and Diamonds being a far more spicy affair than anticipated.
Same, and there was about 1700 of us not 400. Loads left at 3-0.Was there, great game of football.
Sorry, I was talking generally, those two changes in the 80s transformed negative football for the better. Gradually, teams started to be more ambitious away from home, with an extra two points on the table. Most clubs have something to play for after their FA Cup exit now. Before the play-offs, too many teams had absolutely nothing to play for weeks, even months.3 points for a win started in 1981-82 and play-offs wouldn't have made any difference because we were at the bottom end of the table and that season, it was only because there were some really poor teams below teams, that we weren't relegated ourselves.
we had to win by 7 I believe and drew 2-2wasn't it last home game? pretty sure the last game was Cambridge away when it really was bloody cold!
Yeah I’m sure it was too. Pretty sure I was just in my normal spot at the time.Best away end I've ever seen at bramall lane by far, they were absolutely magnificent. The kop was open, I'm absolutely certain I was on it at the front unless my memory has lost the plot.
Also WBA H in 1977, Swindon away 1978, Leeds H in 1980 and 81 and Birmingham H in 82.It was quite common in the 1970s and 1980s for 1st or 2nd division clubs to arrange a friendly match on the 4th round day if they are out of the cup. I remember us playing a friendly at Chesterfield on 4th round day in 1971, played at Israel in 1972, played County Cup final in 1974 and played at Notts County in 1976.
I went to the Everton game (think we lost 3-1). It was to open the John Street Stand. I think Bobby Charlton did the official opening?I didn’t go but was there a mid season friendly against Everton as compensation for Howard Kendall fucking off to join them, masquerading as the One 2 One cup or something?
Similarly there was a pre season game against Forest that was billed as The Capital One cup. Think it was at the lane but could be wrong.
Also the Steel City cup against the pigs which ran for a couple of years.
