Good report DB Couldn't make it myself (pneumonia, as you ask...)

A terrific crowd and the kind of pre-season friendly we should be aiming for (like Fenerbache last year, not the fucking York's and Alfretons of the world).

There are a few players (Baxter, Collins, J C-R) who have been handed a lifeline and it's up to them to prove they've got it. Not at all bothered with Woolford's poor show - he's had to completely re-locate himself & family to the Grim North in just a few days.

It's always hard to judge too much into these kind of games, but I think Newcastle will have got a taste of the long, hard season under McClaren they face.

That's right but didn't last season teach us anything?

Most signings came in unfit because they either were unfit or were coming back from injury.

The sooner we get our hands on a player the sooner we can influence their fitness levels.

We've now got 12 [11 in reality if one signs today] days to ensure they can kick ass on 8th August.
On top of that they have to build an understanding with new team mates.
Two matches [only one that will test them] to develop our starting 11.

We've blown it again in my opinion.

Dear god.

A Toon fan joined us for the game and he thought United were very good, full of energy and purpose and seemingly an endless stream of squad players coming off the bench and playing well.

Adams and Reed caught his eye which was mostly turned on the Toon defence which was shocking yet they only have one new signing to add to the players on show plus Collocini who is reportedly on his was out.

I must say I was proud of the lads and their style of football which actually looked far better than Toon after the first ten minutes. Their new £14m midfielder looked useful but no better than a number of our midfielders.

I was travelling over on Friday and knew nothing of the two signings until I saw Sammon come on - one of those days when United surprise and delight you on the upside for a change.

Hi Deadbat, thanks for taking the time to write the report. Just a quick question on your ratings: do you think maybe they're a tad on the low side? We drew with a Premier League team and seemed to be on top for a fair amount of the game yet all of our players only got 6 or 7 out of 10?

I also thought it was a really positive performance. McEveley would have been a 8 or 9 if it was an important game, or if he was a new signing. Players looked very fit, very much up for it. All back four were solid, Baxter looked a lot fitter, Basham doing the ball winner role well alongside him, and we have many options wide and up front. I was very encouraged.

Is the full game on Blades Player?

And that, students, concludes today's lecture on gross exaggeration....

Then substitute your own ratings!

A Deadbat (or anyone's) report is hardly the Ark of the Covenant...

Changed your tune over the years Pinchy?

It really is totally unprofessional for any professional football club to have no cover at centre back. Young Kyle was never going to be the answer he's an outstanding 19 year old right back. He's under 6 feet tall and lacks experience at this level. He never will be a centre half; it's obvious.

Anyone could see that we were vulnerable to injury or suspension in central defence. It's shamefully amateurish to fail to bring in cover for the first choice pairing once Bromby was sold. How many Championship clubs have less than 4 centre backs in their squads? We expect to manage with 2! Ridiculous! This truly staggering ineptitude has cost us 3 points tonight and will cost many more if not addressed immediately. It's the sort of comedy management normally reserved for S6.

Sort it out now Blades.

Of course having no c/h's [Kennedy is injured] is OK for 2015?

Kennedy is not the answer, fit or unfit. Just as I said, quite rightly, about Kyle Walker.

If we have no new centre backs by the middle of September you'll have a point. At present you have not, nor will you....

This middle of September stuff doesn't fill me with confidence. Points dropped at the beginning of the season are worth just as much as those dropped at the end, as we've learnt to our cost in recent years (that cowardly capitulation at St Andrews on the opening day which stopped us going up, for example).

Cheers, I've been planning to sign up again, may try to download it to watch on a long flight tomorrow.

You mean when a certain Bladey defender, managed by a certain useless buffoon, allowed his man a free turn on the edge of the six yard box?

We won't be waiting until September, mate. I didn't suggest we would, simply a reference to Grumpy taking a bogus point based on an historical scenario six weeks later than the present and drawing an hysterical conclusion.

As ever the close season knee-jerkers are suffering from premature exasperation...

Yes!

To be fair to said 'buffoon' if not for that defeat we could well have been celebrating automatic promotion nine months later.

At least I gave them till the end of September.

Hope the clubs ready for a shitstorm if we have nine points come the end of September.

GRUMPY BLADE, Wednesday at 9:08 AM

Impressed with Baxter's display...MoM,he was class, looks fit and sharp on that showing,I hope he can keep it up.Great first time, quick fire passing...usually forwards and to a red and...errr..well..Pinstripey shirt...ran the show.
The pass into Mcnulty for his goal was typical..first time pass, under pressure which he was doing all game, and Mcnulty and Che do the business from there on.
