Most inept Blades performance you've seen

Choosing a game not mentioned so far (I think), there was an awful game against Millwall in '85 which I recall for two main reasons.

It was a game when John Fashanu totally bullied our defence to the point where they all looked scared of him. As a result, the welcome mat was neatly laid out and Millwall pissed all over us. It finished 3-1 to them with a late goal from us of no consolation. But my biggest memory was the anger in the crowd during this game as we meekly surrendered, I can't remember it being as bad before or since, even with far bigger crowds in attendance.

Towards the end some people were cheering Millwall and booing us. Eckhardt's consolation goal raised barely a murmur.

Morris missed a penalty in the first half, which didn't help.

The atmosphere was poisonous. I agree it was the worst I've ever experienced in the Lane. It was bad all season - Fulham (league game), Carlisle and Norwich were other games where the team and Porterfield took a lot of abuse, and of course Porterfield got canned after Norwich.

The obvious Walsall H 81, Oldham H 88, Port Vale H 99 have to be up there in the top 10.

First half against QPR and we were 3-0 down. Warnock eased off and sat back in the second half, otherwise it could have been 10-0. We were as pathetic as any United team at their worst and that takes some doing.

Wigan away 2016 under Adkins and we went 3-0 down (again). What should have been a marvellous fighting comeback to 3-3, was still shit and seemed to happen by accident and Billy.

Then the last game under Adkins 0-2 to Scunny. I have seem Blades teams play shitter than that but NEVER show so little care or effort ('endeavour'?). I'd defended NA in the pub pre match saying we couldn't keep on sacking a manager every season. By the middle of the second half I was leading the 'Adkins Out' chants and couldn't believe how he'd allowed a team to be out in front of us and not even try. The booing of Hammond and walking out before the 'lap of dishonour' was at least cathartic.
Some good shouts in there coco , what stands out in my mind from the QPR game , is the loudest cockney cunt on the train going back to Manchester , and one of the biggest fuckers ,
But fuck me his bird was drop dead gorgeous ,
When we landed back in Dublin that night asked some Blackburn fans how they'd got on
They asked me the same
and said at least we've still got a manager , meaning Blackburn

You know there's an airport not that far from Loftus Road? Not sure if you can fly to Dublin from there though, it's not a big airport. ;)

Bonus points for anyone who can remember the away game where we were losing so Blackwell responded by putting Jordan Stewart on the right wing?

Has anyone ever made a more hilarious tactical switch?

I remember being utterly bemused when the tactical genius that was Blackwell decided to play Greg Halford on the right wing and Danny Webber as Centre forward.

Halford a classic 'bad' Blades player. A big lad and good in the air (ticks two Blackwell boxes) just sadly had no heart. This was particulary apparent at Wembley 2009, when him and the rest of the midfield/strikers* failed to even turn up. Cotterill, Quinn, Howard and Craig Beattie won no plaudits that day.

* Honourable exception was the much maligned (by some) Nick, Monty Montgomery who ran his knackers off. The defence (including a certain Kyle Walker with only a handful of games), were blameless for this horror show.

Wasn’t monty the one who lost the ball before wade smashed it in from 25 yards? Passed it straight to him IIRC.

Edit: Just watched the goal again. I’m talking bollocks.

I remember it well and we even won the games against Fulham (2-1?) and Carlisle (1-0?).

I remember another particularly bad performance at home to Middlesbrough that we lost 0-3 and was it David Mills that tore us apart that day? This may have been the previous season.

Probably get some stick for this but Millwall away last season was dreadful. Lacked any creativity or cohesion going forward and were shocking at the back. Some people say we were unlucky not to get a point, but I thought we were shocking. I thought it would be another season of mediocrity.

Little did I know we wouldn’t lose another game for months and we’d win the league with 100 points.

Funny old game Saint.

That was the year before. In 1985/6 we lost 1-0 to them with a last minute goal having dominated the game. Boro were on their arse and brought about 50 fans.

I noticed when I was looking at our results from those seasons that we lost 5-0 at Wimbledon in both 1984/85 and 85/86!

No doubt our powder puff lot rolled over to Bassett's Crazy Gang big bullies!

The return leg at Yeovil sticks in my mind as we were totally useless for the entire 90 minutes and it was a bloody long way home whilst feeling totally despondent. Altrincham in the FA cup was another low point.

The worst game I've been to is without doubt United 0-1 Burton under Adkins. It sticks out as it is the only game I've ever been to where we've been a goal down and the 2nd half injury time of 6 minutes has been booed. People just really didn't want to see 6 minutes more of such an inept performance.

Special mention to the Shrewsbury game too; the only game I've actually left mega early. I left after Shrewsbury's 4th which I think was around 55 minutes. I had revision to do and if they couldn't be arsed to put in some effort, I couldn't be arsed to put in the effort to stay and watch them. Problem is, you've then got the Bury and Colchester games that season too, which were diabolical. The list of bad games from 2010-2016 seems endless.

its hard to have anything original because its all mainly been said & done, also you could take your pick from my time 100 odd games under robson weir or adkins. I been trying to remember unsuccessfully another game v Watford cant remember what year, but we I think we lost 4-1 & I was so pissed off that when we scored from a header I didn't move. i just stayed sat down

but I give a vote to
Hartlepool H Dec 2012(ish) - terrible like the carlise/yeovil A performance people mentioned, Christmas we are top of the league playing Bottom of the league with 1 win all season, without a win in 20+ games soon to be relegated. yet they came not just beat us, but outplayed us in every department

Hartlepool H JPT Oct 2013 - Lifeless performance never looked like scoring all night & I always when the away fans sing sacked in the morning, then home fans join in during the match & after the final whistle. your gone

shrewsbury H Nov 2015 - nearly 2 yrs ago & id go as far to say the most toxic atmosphere I can remember. we were lucky to just concede 4 that day could've easily been 8, in hindsight Adkins never stood a chance after that

Southend H aug 2016 - its the only Wilder performance that goes in, because those 1st 15mins were dreadful. way southend players walked through our defence scoring 3 in 15mins was 1 of the most embarrassing periods ive had lane

I meant to have so older games but my memory isn't as good as thought with out going through some old fixtures to jog my memory

I went to the 84/85 drubbing and bad as it was, it doesn't deserve to be in this company. We stood on the open end in pouring rain watching the ball sail over our heads and out of the ground. As it happened, I seem to remember the day being a bit of a laugh with plenty of singing, so we really couldn't have been uber-bad like some of the other games on this thread.

Can there really be anything worse than watching your hated rivals putting 4 past you without reply in front of almost 50,000...
That day we were inept, coupled with surrender, gutless attitude once the first went in and no appetite whatsoever for a Sheffield derby.
Nothing in terms of significance has come close in my lifetime, and there's been some reight shite served up over the years...

SO MANY TO GO AT

port vale 2 sufc 0 xmas ruined
altrincham 3 blades 0 desperate display
stevenage 4 blades 1 just embarrassing
newport 4 blades 0 ineptitude of epic proportions
crystal palace 1 sufc 0 , to be fair both teams were bloody dreadful
cambridge 2 sufc 0 , relegated to div 3

theres probably 100 more

Losing at home in 84 when we expected to win and more or less clinch promotion. I remember thinking 'this shouldn't be happening'. Which, ironically, is what I thought at the POF in Cardiff many years later. Because I'll never fucking learn.

if i ever get the chance to ask Adkins 1 question about that season. it would be about that post match v scunthorpe. mainly WHY, because what on earth did he expect to accomplish from that. was he really that far out of touch

because im surely all of us had discussions about our usual traditions & what might happen. im not the only one who thought surely after wasnt it the worst season for 30yrs. they wouldnt have the nerve. even if by a miracle they did, theyll be told never by security. be told go off & dont come back. because its a bomb waiting to go off. which was proved during the 2nd half with the hammond subsition huge cheer. him giving kop 2 fingers. as its going to be empty stadium which would be degrading or you have few hundred fans there. only there to give you quite horrible abuse that no one deserves even adkins

We drew 0-0 at home with Barnsley or Doncaster on a Tuesday night during the league one years.

I can't remember if it was Barnsley or Doncaster because I can't remember anything about the game, it was that boring.

Probably not the worst result or performance I've seen, but the only thing I can remember about that night was just how utterly shite the game was.

Premier Leauge 93/94 Southampton at home 0-0.....

Yaaaaaaaaawwwwwnnnn
Coventry away the same season, on TV, 0-0, awful. I reckon lad from Boro played up front on his own (Falconer). We went on the train and it took ages to get home.

Shield your eyes now. 24th Sept. 1996. Blades 2 Stockport 5. Our scorers G. Taylor and Petr Katchouro. Crowd: 6,850. Second leg, second round of the Coca Cola League Cup (we'd lost the first leg at Shrewsbury 1-2, Vonk.)
There was a League Cup game at Stockport under Kendall where we were awful again, One of Katchuro’s first matches.

Morris missed a penalty in the first half, which didn't help.

Remember the Norwich match. The atmosphere on the kop before the game even started was quite nasty. can't recall who was playing that day, but when the team came out to warm up most got the bird. 'Porterfield out!' was heard more than anything else that day.

whatever happened to him.
I think it was him who missed the pen ,NIal Quin won everything in the air.

Bridges got a bad injury in a Champions League game when he played for Leeds. It didn't end his career but he never cut it at the top level again. He played in the lower leagues and in Australia though.

We once lost 0-1 to Doncaster at Bramall Lane (27/01/09) and it was the most boring game of football I've ever seen.

Apart from their goal literally nothing happened for 90 minutes.

I remember a similar game against Preston a few years ago, though we won 1-0 on that occasion. Even the goal was a mistake - a free kick on the wing which Jamie Ward took. It sailed past everyone and into the far corner. All 22 players seemed utterly incompetent that day and to cap it off it was fucking freezing.

There's a sideline - worst performance in which we won?

That's the fucker. I'm certain I hasn't been a worse performance since, that's how bad it was.
