Most inept Blades performance you've seen

As soon as I saw the thread title the 2-4 Shrewsbury and 0-3 Southend match stuck out to me, they’ll forever haunt me, after the Shrewsbury game I didn’t attend another game for 2 months, the longest I’ve ever gone without going to a game, I really did want to jack it all in and pretend I was a ice hockey fan, but I think sometimes a bit of mutual time away from each other does couples good and I went back and although it took us a bit of time to build our relationship back up, I’m glad to say me and the other half are doing brilliant we’ve had a whirlwind last 12 months and made some great memories together.

I was the same, I think the match after Shrewsbury I went to was the 0-0 with Swindon. I've never been like this before but after that I just couldn't be arsed to waste my money for the rest of that season.

The 1-0 defeat at Bury under Adkins. A truly shocking performance. Was Baxter’s last game in a Blades shirt but you would have thought the lot of them had been on drugs.
The Yeovil game under Clough sounded equally as bad and if I’d been there would probably have edged it purely because of the distance

Bury away league cup tie on a Tuesday evening. Bassett in charge and sent them straight back out at half time. Made to stand around for ten minutes waiting for Bury to come out for the second half.

If I remember correctly Mark Blount was at right back
Was that when Mike McDonald was just about to take over ? Remember a dismal performance in a league cup tie when we got done 4-0 or 4-1.

We've not had many lately so I thought I'd have a good old reminisce about bygone days when the Blades were still capable of bringing us out in cold sweats with their performances.

I have some contenders in no particular order and I'm sure there are plenty others to add....

2016/17
Southend home L 0-3 (seems like a lifetime ago)

2015/16
Shrewsbury home L 2-4
Bury away L 0-1
Burton home L 0-1

1987/88
Oldham home L 0-5

For me, a game that sticks out was when we played Coventry at home on Boxing Day, either 1992 or 1993. We lost 0-3 and it was truly awful. When that Bassett side played well, it was exciting and effective but when they didn't play well it could be awful. We couldn't string two 'hoofs' (for Pinchy ) together and it's the only time I've left a game more than a few minutes early, on 66 minutes after they scored their 3rd to be exact.

That Oldham game in 1988 was the earliest I've ever left a game. I was about 15 and walked back in the house just after 4.30pm to very confused mother who asked

"I thought you were at the football this afternoon"

Three games stick in my mind.

0-1 at home to Walsall (1981?) when we were relegated to Division 4 for the first time in our history. After 89 minutes it was 0-0. Neither team had looked like scoring the whole game. We only needed to get a draw to stay up and send Walsall down. On 89 minutes Walsall get a penalty and score. We are down. Then in added time we get a penalty at Kop end. If we score, we stay up. Don Givens (on Loan) takes the pen and hits it over the bar. We are relegated!
0-3 (or was it 1-3?) at home to Port Vale, crowd 9,000, in Championship (or was it called first division then?). 1999. Adrian Heath's last game as manager. Dire!
0-1 at home to Burton L3 during Adkins season. The most inept display I have ever seen from a United side - more inept I think than the Walsall game above!. No organisation, no one seemed to know where they were playing or what their role was and no motivation whatsoever.

Bassett was in the papers day after, saying 'our football ⚽ isn't working. We are hitting it long from now on.'
I thought we were already doing that.

Robbo's last home game, first time I've ever left early, about 75 mins into game. When I got outside loads had the same idea. Real low point

Don't think I left early but this was the game where I said to my dad that if Robson wasn't gone by the next home match I wasn't going to go until he had gone.
Even in the darkest days of Weir and Adkins I never had to threaten that.

The most inept performance I've seen in person would be losing 0-2 at home to Yeovil. George Long tried to dribble around Paddy Madden, got tackled and Madden rolled the ball in the empty net.

That and every Play-Off Final.
Alan Kelly tried that with Lee Hughes of WBA in April 1998. Lost 4 2 at home.
Chris Wilder in midfield, Traianos Dellas at the back

Getting beaten 1-0 by an already relegated Yeovil stands out for me. Shocking game, Tuesday night, miles away and beat by the whipping boys of the division.

I was there and can confirm the awfulness of the match.

I think we won there 1-0 the year before and it was the only time I have ever come away from an away victory depressed.

The play-off defeat there was utterly shit as well.

So there you have it, in victory or defeat Yeovil is the motherlode for inept performances

For all the nonsense over the years it was the 1-0 defeat at millwall under NA. They scored in the first minute but we never put them under any pressure, simply passed it sideways for 90 minutes. It was a terrible feeling seeing the club fall so far and at all the places to witness it. That’s why the last year and a bit have been so incredible.

Boston 1 Blades 1. FA Cup. Being outplayed by a non league side is never great. We were lucky to get a replay.

Not done it since, I was so pissed off with them all, there was no heart or desire at all, not a glimmer. It was like watching something you love slowly die in front of your eyes

I detest that wanker who put teams out too play in that manner.
Fucking disgusting.

Givens penalty was saved by Ron Green

I'd say the Oldham game was about the worst I ever saw as well Billy McEwan was sacked immediately after it and as I recall to top things off the heavens opened and we all got soaked to the skin.

The only time I have been close to being as throughly depressed as that was the Bozo Adkins capitulation against Shrewsbury.
