It looks as though this ridiculous midfield system of a flat, immobile 3 is set to continue as Wilder has told one of his most trusted players he won’t fit in as a number 10.

Was gonna comment on this, reckon he’s hoping to use McGoldrick/Woodburn playing off a main striker to link the play rather than a player in the ‘Duffy’ role...which is slightly concerning. Can see why to an extent - to tighten us up a bit but at the same time I’ve always admired the way we’ve gone for teams with two up and one behind.

Not sure where this leaves Duff?

Why did Wilder sign him? I just don't get it. I maintained as soon as Holmes signed a new contract at Charlton we should've ended the pursuit but this revelation makes it even more crazy and to top it all he's always looked useful when he's got on to the pitch!

Do we're aiming for a system that isolates the forward line from the midfield...

It's a bold strategy, let's see how it plays out.

Completely agree, why on earth wasn’t he given more of a chance

I read it as that he is 3rd choice behind Woodburn and Duffy for the role behind the front two.

We weren’t going to play a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 that would improve Holmes chances to play on the wing or one of three behind the lone striker.

Wouldn't Holmes' natural position be on the right or left of midfield? I thought that's where he'd been playing. Maybe not an out and out winder but not through the centre. Which means his signing makes even less sense. As does the signing of Thomas.

Holmes like Lundstrum, Evans and Possibly Leonard isn't good enough for The Championship.

Sorry.

I don’t agree that Lundstrum, Leonard and Evans will never be good enough for Championship level. They have shown some potential and are young enough to still make it.

Holmes was signed at 30 having never played at Championship level, even his League One experience was limited. I don’t think it should be a surprise that he didn’t make it.

Agreed. But my concern is about the system we are adopting.

The most worrying thing is the time it will take Foxy to go through all this shit and combine threads and themes together whilst doing his day job and giving Linz a hand with the nipper.

Maybe make a new section for "Wanker Posts"

Im just confused at what is going on in wilders brain. At moment has been chasing holmes since the moment he joined us. But has got rid within a few months

I agree with this 're RH signing sometimes it comes off & sometimes it doesn't. No manager is perfect they all take a punt sometimes if no cash involved. The midfield conundrum is whoever played there last season as a unit they didn't score goals. Compare any one of them to Browny 's goal scoring ability & none come up t9 scratch. All successful teams have a good goals tally from the midfield unit. It's the difference between getting promotion & finishing half way in the table.

What I can’t work out is the long pursuit of RH eventually signing him knowing he plays left midfield for a team that doesn’t play with a left midfielder??
He hasn’t really been tried in the No 10 (Duffy) role either now he’s gone out on loan after only 5 appearances??
Bizarre really.

We really are playing with fire this season from having a midfield considered not requiring any additions we are now down to (I'm only writing this so I can see myself what's happened not teaching anybody to suck eggs):
Fleck
Lundstram
Basham
Leonard = not bedded in yet not proved competent in a full game
Coutts = injured
Duffy = more in the hole
Woodburn = more in the hole

Have i missed anybody?
We are now resorting to unknowns, utility players, playing people out of position and this after a ponderous start to the season.
Whilst GK is covered and the defense should 'come good' with the players in the squad, the forward line is paper thin; again after releasing players before getting the replacements in.
And all this is before people make declarations that x, y and z aren't good enough! My fear is we now top up the squad with Cofie, Notman, Pericard type loans just to get body's in.

It seems like we're going for more of a Southgate's England-style 5-3-2 this year. It makes sense theoretically, because it should make us more solid and offer better protection from counters and for our wing-backs, plus in Leonard and Fleck we have people who can go box-to-box and we now have forwards who can drop a bit deeper and link play.

But in the first two games, we've actually looked defensively worse. Plus, if we're playing more of a flat midfield 3 we probably should have brought in another CM (or not let Regan Slater go) and I don't see what we're going to do with Duffy.

don't understand it. compared to who he was up against (Lundstram, Evans, Leonard) i thought he looked the best of the lot

If we sign Freeman and Coutts is fit enough to play the concerns will evaporate pretty quick. I’d be delighted with that tbh. But unless Wilder has this more or less agreed then it leaves us very exposed.

If we were playing Southgate’s version we’d have Leonard behind 2 of Duffy, Holmes or Woodburn.

I don’t think you can consider having Dele Ali and Jesse Lindgard in a three as a flat 3. It was Henderson defending and those two attacking.

That’s how I saw it anyway.

think this covers it succinctly
outstripping league 2 defences which Leonard excelled at is not quite the same as battling championship midfields and defences
