Why did Wilder sign him? I just don't get it. I maintained as soon as Holmes signed a new contract at Charlton we should've ended the pursuit but this revelation makes it even more crazy and to top it all he's always looked useful when he's got on to the pitch!

Really.....he looked like a headless chicken to me

+ Kean Bryan

+ Player CW states coming in on loan which converts to permanent in Jan in Rob Staton Friday interview

Bryan is a defender (may be the next JOC or the next Heneghan who knows?)
I'm with the guys who 'don't believe it until he's lining up in a competitive game to play for us.' (Ever since photoshop wankers ruined the holding a shirt up pics).

Wilder has pretty much cleared this up/ confirmed what Holmes has said, but also added that he was down the pecking order behind Brooks and Duffy last season and that he couldn’t give him the games he needed.

I thought Holmes, Duffy and sharp looked good against Inter when they played a cameo and given Holmes’ appearances in friendlies I thought he might play a bigger part.

Not to be and perhaps not quite up to the pace of this division if his cameos last season are anything to go by.

Wilder also said that he probably didn’t give Holmes enough chances but that’s how it goes.

All the above posts lead to only one conclusion : Absolute shit managerial decisions and signings by the Fukin messiah.

I seem to recall the FLAT 3 in centre mid worked perfectly away at swillsboro last September.

From memory we brought CCV to RWB and pushed Bash into the midfield with Fleck and Coutts.

We had 40% of the play that day but had decent forwards (playing well) in Brooks and Clarke.

A flat 5 can work well - but don't forget we had Coutts pulling the strings as usual then.

Gawd, have we missed Coutts.

fair enough his wiki says CB or box to box midfielder. I've never seen him play, perhaps brought in partly for his versatility if he can do both.

Typically manager’s get about 50% of their signings right. I generally think Wilder is on the right side of that.

Plenty of people posted on here that Duffy wasn’t going to be able to step up to the Championship. Holmes gave him some competition, but Brooks emerged and he became third choice.

It’s a relatively low cost gamble. Why agonise over it? It’s a GLTTL and move on.

Think you’re right, though generally the ones that don’t come off aren’t players that the manager has worked with previously, as they tend to know more about the player’s capability/suitability. Warnock had a load of players that didn’t work out, but as much as he was criticised for bringing in his old players by and large they were successful (Tommy Johnson is the only one I can think of immediately, and he was never intended as anything other than a cheap emergency player).

Wilder worked with Holmes before, and invested a few hundred grand after a protracted battle for his signing. It parallels almost with Dean Hammond on the effort to sign him, the familiarity the manager had with the player previously, and the strangeness in how they subsequently didn’t work out. Though (and I anticipate the abuse as I move to type it...) if you consider their respective contributions, Hammond actually produced more positive moments in his time with us than Holmes did – though Holmes provided an equal amount of unseen work on account of not actually playing...
