Oh I have noticed.

I have also noticed:

(1) NM managed to fool 6 managers for 12 years; and
(2) He has now managed to fool the manager a team in a higher division than us.

It follows that either

(1) All 7 managers he has played under are stupid;
(2) NM has hypnotic ability;
(3) You talk crap about NM.

My money is on 3.

Darren, just give up. You'll never convince them with things like facts and reason. Just remember, the world is flat and noone will ever land on the moon.

Many years ago, when Blades actually listened to Radio Sheffield, a sensible caller pointed out that our resident shadow-chaser couldn't actually play football.
One of the We  Mediocrity Brigade responded. He claimed to have met our Frankie on holiday, whereupon Frank couldn't wait to reveal that our Nick was one of his toughest ever opponents.
Since then, hundreds claim to have heard or seen Frank say this in an interview somewhere, but can't quite place it. The same people went on to write Monty's unique job description, which demands no football ability whatsoever, but enables them to say "He does his job".
One day I'll write a book...

I've no idea whether Lampard said that or not but if it's true he might have been referring to this match:-

"Frank Lampard, expertly marshalled by Nick Montgomery, was rested at half-time"
Man of the match: Nick Montgomery (Sheffield United).

Maybe John Ley of The Telegraph is a fully paid up member of the "we love mediocrity" brigade?

Incidentally, amidst all the celebrations about Monty leaving, I haven't seen much discussion on our other midfield options.
Who do people see as being Doyle's replacement now if he gets injured or suspended?
Would Williamson and McDonald together really be good enough defensively?
Or were people mightily impressed by Ertl's last midfield performance against Scunthorpe when he got pulled off after 45 minutes?
Whichever way you look at it, Montgomery was our second choice defensive midfielder and we've allowed him to leave without yet replacing him.

Maybe someone ought to ask Patrick Vierra whether or not he had an easy game against Montgomery in the FA Cup replay at Bramall Lane against Arsenal.

Might be made permanent in the summer according to Kenny Jackett

Unofficial Millwall site

KENNY Jackett has revealed that Nick Montgomery's loan move to Millwall from Sheffield United could become permanent in the summer.
But the Lions boss says the 30-year-old's first task will be to aid the Lions in their battle against relegation.
Jackett believes that the Scottish midfielder's competitive edge and his ability to lead by example are vital attributes that the team need at this stage of the season.
"He is an experienced midfield player and he gives us cover for Liam Trotter, who will still be three or four weeks away from full fitness," Jackett told the club's official website.
"I think he is a good competitor, a good leader and the type of player we need in this situation. It is also a great opportunity for me to look at him for the future as well."

Maybe he is? I know nothing about him except that he seems to be a newspaper reporter. That does not invest his opinions with any more authority than yours or mine, does it!

I'll guarantee that I've suffered far more of Montgomery's 'performances' than our reporter friend.

Incidentally, we lost a 'one-sided' match 3-0. The breaking up play and protecting the back four wasn't quite firing on all cylinders, was it?

And naturally that was all down to Montgomery. When we fail to win every one of our remaining nine games I expect it'll all be down to him sticking pins in voodoo dolls down in London.

Monty has done his job on occasion.

Although one swallow does not a summer make.

Not sure I stand by this theory many managers have stuck by him and I think his wages since being in the PL have made him a difficult player to move. For the money clubs would of had to spend to get him in the last 6 years then probably thought that money would be better spent on someone else. Id not be surprised if we are part paying his wages for his time at Millwall just to help offload him.

Warnock the singer of praise for Monty has since not made a move for him regardless of what club he has managed. Like I have pointed out before he has always opted to go looking for Derry instead.

If we conservatively estimate NM's wages at an average of £5k for week for the past 12 years, he has earned £3 million over the past 12 years.

If NM is no more than a pub player he must be the greatest negotiater in the world to earn that kind of money.

And naturally that was all down to Montgomery.

But then he never actually said that did he? Merely pointed out that, despite, the messiah being brilliant it wasn't enough to save us from defeat (a pasting even, if they'd have ever bothered to get out of second gear).

I don't think I've ever known a player divide opinion so much as this one. However, it seems our current manager would rather unload him, even without a replacement on board, than keep him around. Does that mean he is a wank manager compared to the "big five" who knew so much in the past?

He may not have said it, but if he didn't mean it why mention it in those terms?

Ahh, but at contract time he's always been a gnats knacker away from being whisked away by someone. It's only because we insist on not selling any of our better players that we've kept him by the skin of our teeth.

It should also be noted that, in that report, the reporter - who clearly has little or no interest in SUFC, given that the report focuses almost entirely on Chelsea - names NM as the man of the match in a game against some of the most expensive players in the PL.

But, of course, Monty is just shit.

Don't you ever feel that you've under achieved? You know better than all managers (like a good few here to be fair) who've managed him and better than the manager from the league above who's hiring him....:)

I'm personally glad his time up. His limitations are all too expsed under Wilson's style. Yet his attributes have contrubuted to some great times over the last decade. I wish him all the best.

Monty has not been fit and if you think Doyle is better then I do feel sorry for you, how much did Doyle cost? Oh yes he was a free and dos'ent it show! l eds soon got shot of him when they snuck up.

It does have to be noted NW did transfer list him more than once with no takers.

Monty has occasionally done a job but nothing more.

In recent years I think he has been one player holding the club back in terms of the type of football we play which is one reason we now find ourselves in this league.

You either like him for his 110% worth ethic and that he has the balls to give Lampard a good kicking or you don't like him because he breaks up our own attack and cant pass further than his nose.

Or feel somewhere in between, appreciating the work ethic and ability to break up the opposition play whilst acknowledging that any team he's in isn't going to play it through midfield. It really doesn't have to be black or white.

Exactly. But you can't say that without being accused of loving hoofball or wanting to wallow in mediocrity.

And the totally offensive personal abuse that some posters give him is completely unwarranted and contemptible.

sorry i'm not allowed to talk about it.. i was wondering where the lampard thing came from.. sounds like poetic licence to me

Last Monty thread and it's the best ever.

Will we ever see his like again??

Which scenario seems more likely:-

a) A Blades fan rings Radio Sheffield and invents a totally fictitious story about meeting Frank Lampard on holiday and hearing Montgomery praised by Lampard.

b) A Blades rings Radio Sheffield and relates a true story about meeting Frank Lampard on holiday and hearing Montgomery praised by Lampard.

or

c) A Sheffield United fan rings Radio Sheffield and relates a true story about meeting Frank Lampard in a pie shop and hearing Montgomery praised by Lampard.

or

d) A Sheffield United fan rings Radio Sheffield and relates a true story about meeting Nick Montgomery on holiday and hearing Lampard praised by Montgomery. Caught up in the excitement of being on local radio, the fan confuses the story slightly.

Ok, the stupid thing is this.
The alleged "myth" according to Pinchy is that Lampard said that Monty was "ONE of his TOUGHEST ever opponents".
Note that he doesn't say the most skilful, or the finest passer of the ball or THE BEST ever opponent. Just that he was one of the toughest.
It's like a great defender saying that Billy Whitehurst was the hardest player he ever marked.
Or a great forward saying Keith Curle was one of the toughest defenders he ever played against.

Even Monty's biggest detractors would have admit that he's a good man-marker, dogged, determined, difficult to shake off.
We have evidence that Lampard was substituted at half time in a match where he was "Superbly marshalled" by "Man of the match" Monty.
Is it really so impossible to believe that Lampard might once have said to a Blades fan that Monty was "one of his toughest ever opponents"?
It's certainly not possible to categorically state as Pinchy does that it was NEVER said. Only Lampard and his "mythical" holidaying chum can know that for certain.

There is a third option: Blades fan meets Lampard on holiday and says to him "hey up, Frank, Nick Montgomery, what a player, eh?". Lampard thinks "who the fuck is Nick Montgomery...never mind, just agree to get rid of this tosser spoiling my holiday" and says "er...yeah".

That seems the most likely to me...

Just a quick thought before I put this to bed (speaking for myself obviously, more than happy for everyone else to knock themselves out over him).

A few percentages for the managers who've managed him over the last 11+ years (i.e since he made his full debut in Oct 2000):

Warnock. P302 (League Games only). Monty Starts 147. 49%
Robson. P32. MS 18. 56%
Blackwell. P108. MS 67. 62%
Wilson. P37. MS 14. 38%

I may have missed a couple of starts (and last season has too many managers to do a full analysis) but he's hardly been an ever present has he? Even the master of hoof only started him in two thirds of his tedious tenure.

So he's neither ever present or a benchwarmer. Neither a world beater or a lost cause. Find me anyone arguing the former, yet some including you, want to argue the latter.

Your stats don't back up your position. They back up the opposing one.
