Monty. Without question - one of the most honest pros we have had, ever.

Monty will always split opinion on his ability or lack of it. He wasn't one of our better players but he was a long way from being one of the worst. Doyle on the other hand was a mainstay in one of the worst periods in our history. Watching him line up with Collins every week used to give you that peculiar feeling in the pit of your stomach of impending disaster. He was fucking garbage.
However, his funny walk against West Ham earned him redemption from certain fans who find this kind of stuff more important than footballing ability.
Oh yes time to slag off Neil Collins as well whilst we're here!
Morris was signed after we’d been relegated, by Porterfield. Stancliffe joined us two years later, to captain the side that went up to the second division, under PorterfieldNot this again! We're all pissed off with the new kit and Brooks leaving so lets just slag off Doyle! And for the record Doyle WAS NOT PART OF THE WORST EVER SHEFFIELD UNITED TEAM! Are fans too young to remember the team relegated to the 4th division and then the team's in the mid 80's were hardly brilliant and full of has beings as well as the odd jewell such as Morris and Stancliffe.
We got 90 points in the first season with Doyle which was a great effort, the second season we finished 5th, the third 9th and got to the FA cup semi, next season 5th and the League Cup semi and finally the crapest season was the last one under Adkins was dire but I think Dean Hammond, Martyn Woolford and Conor Sammon might have had something to do with that!
For me I'd take Doyle over Monty but Monty did better for us. Doyle didn't join us till he was 29 whereas we had the best years out of Monty and both gave their all for us.
Agree some truly awful shite back thenNot this again! We're all pissed off with the new kit and Brooks leaving so lets just slag off Doyle! Yay. One of my favourite close season pastimes.![]()
Monty. Football genius
When was this ? If to are referring to the game at Crewe he was getting personal abuse from a fan which he reacted to. He came back to the fan at the end of the game to apologise and they shock hands.Monty.
Both very limited footballers but I remember Doyle slagging our away fans off once while Monty would have run through a brick wall for us.
Maybe, I can't remember. When was this ? If to are referring to the game at Crewe he was getting personal abuse from a fan which he reacted to. He came back to the fan at the end of the game to apologise and they shock hands.
Was it Wilson that signed Doyle or Adams?
I was only a kid but some of it seemed pretty good for the third division, in our promotion season. It was certainly a joy to watch Morris and Edwards, and there were some good moments from Arnott and Cockerill. Stan was a great signing at the time, shored us up at the back.Aye but the mid 80's was hardly classic stuff - Keith Edwards says himself we weren't a great side when McEwan was there and although we hgot promoted under Porterfield twice I am led to believe it wasn't great football? I am 39 so its before my time but people seem to think that just because its all they've known that the recent team in Div 3 (not last season) was awful. There were some decent players in the 6 years we we were in Div 3 in recent times. Maguire, Murphy, Lowton, Quinn, McDonald, Williamson, Ched.
It was far from the worst United side and Doyle and Collo weren't out of place until the last season when both were past their best - particularly Collo. But Doyle's got the player of the season Both Cov and Pompey and that may have being Div 2 but I'm sure he'll do a decent job even now at 36 in Div 1. I don't really get why fans always pick on Doyle like he is part of the worst Sheff U 11. I think its only because he was with us for many seasons at a level that was very frustrating and he optimised that level for many. But for me he did a decent job and its all about opinions.
