Right then, having a right argument with a fellow Blade so let’s sort this.

Montgomery or Doyle?

Monty played at a higher level and imo was a much better player.

Let’s go and sort this....no idea how to start a poll.

Monty will always split opinion on his ability or lack of it. He wasn't one of our better players but he was a long way from being one of the worst. Doyle on the other hand was a mainstay in one of the worst periods in our history. Watching him line up with Collins every week used to give you that peculiar feeling in the pit of your stomach of impending disaster. He was fucking garbage.

However, his funny walk against West Ham earned him redemption from certain fans who find this kind of stuff more important than footballing ability.

Monty is/was exactly the sort of player you need when you’re playing against a team better than yourselves. He can man-mark and nullify the midfield incredibly well - something that is hugely underrated in football. Unfortunately he doesn’t work anywhere near as well in games where you are the stronger side. He has the same effect (nullifying the midfield) which means that you lose the advantage. So, Monty’s worth varied a lot depending on the context.

Doyle worked hard and was competent, but wasn’t anywhere near the same level of athleticism or discipline.
