Missing the Playoffs - the positives

There are some positives to not making them (this season).

1) Would we have stood any chance? It's a very strong line up especially with Fulham in the mix.
2) Teams that fail in the playoffs generally don't do as well the next season - the psychology of loosing.
3) It motivates the team and manager to try that little bit harder.
4) It highlights to the manager what needs to be improved.
5) It shows the board that to achieve the premier league target a certain budget is required.
6) The fans expectations are still realistic (see our neighbours at the start of this season).

It also normally gives you plenty of time to plan and recruit for next season.

Though we may have found a way to overcome this advantage!

The reason we never do as well the season after we lose in the playoffs is because we always get rid of some of our best players immediately after we fail. The one and only time we strengthened after playoff failure was 1997. Since then we've started the season after with a weaker team.

You never recover from losing the play off final. Losing in the semis is a bad end to a season. I've maintained for a long time that its more damaging to be in the play offs, unless you win them

I think over two legs against the sides in the Play offs we wouldn't have done it. We're knackered.

So if you can't get 1st or 2nd, then 7th and below is fine.

7) I could relax yesterday, sunbathe and get pissed without constantly checking our progress. Now that's a positive! Seriously, I feel (a bit) sorry for the fans of the play-off teams - three out of four of them will end up disappointed (and out of pocket) by May 26th.

If I was a Derby fan, I'd be seriously worried.

Fulham - still bottling with the best of them

So Fulham can still go up.

Pigs: made playoffs again
Brighton: Automatically promoted
Derby: finished 9th

Many teams have made the playoffs twice or more times in a row (we've done it twice ourselves) and a number of others went up automatically after losing the final.

Not winning the playoffs is obviously not a good thing, but the idea that it is damaging for the following season? I'm not convinced that's true.

This smacks of both Sheffielder ambition and Blade negativity.

Top two is very difficult at this level but teams have managed to sneak in the play offs and get promoted, and then even stay up a while.

We have the worst play off record of any team which makes me want to break that and also think the law of averages says we will.

If the attitude is if we can't finish 1st or 2nd then we'd rather be 7th or lower, I'm out.

Only positive is it's saved me some money. I know we've had some bad times in there but you can't beat the atmosphere of a play off semi final

Can you imagine ever going into a game thinking "we'd better deliberately loose this, as if we win we'll go top of the league, and we're aiming for 5th"

Its not deluded to strive for the top, thinking you're already there is.

Its goal setting, yes they have to be attainable, but we have to look at this season and realise that we got to the top of the league, so wheres the delusion? We need a lot in place to get there again AND stay there, but its possible and should be the goal.

However, if you settle for 6th place you're already selling yourselves short

Not sure I get that. Warnock aimed for the playoffs and ended up with autos.

The Last two seasons where the first seasons since the Burnley play off where we haven’t started the season with a weaker looking side than we had previously.

So in that time 4 teams who reached the playoffs went up automatically the year after.

All the play off games in the past are like recurring nightmares except the semi finals where we won. Crystal Palace were near the bottom of the league and made a great run to win the play off. It’s a lottery. The “massive” thought they had it in the bag and were out played.

It would seem that losing in the play-offs either leads to a successful (or almost successful) following season or a downhill slump. I'm guesisng those who slumped bet big on going up.
