As its pre-season and transfer talk is somewhat frustrating at the minute, I decided to delve back into the past and as I often do watch a video on You tube from our golden era under Harry and I stumbled across this golden match again!

Anyone who remembers this game will remember the sudden goal scoring exploits of Mike Lake who scored 4 goals in 4 games and suddenly became Mike Zico Lake over night! I then looked at what Wikipedia said about Zico and was disappointed but also laughed as it said the following:

Mike Lake was a professional footballer.

I kid you not! I couldn't have that! In fact I couldn't live in this world with that been the only description of Zico! So, like a sad lad, and at just after 1am last night, having started at 12 I edited it to this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Lake_(footballer) - aided by a really interesting article from Wrexham fans which I think will be of interest to United fans. I hope I did Mike justice! The article from the Wrexham fans is below and definitely worth a read!

P.S when I finally finished and got into bed the missus said (yes I am married!), "where've you been"? I didn't think it was best to say I've been editing Mike Lake's profile so I just said nothing and said sorry! I know, I know, I need to get out more!

remember watching the highlights of another game on TV with the commentary 'another (goal) from Mike Lake's repertoire of fancy goals.' Heard it once remember it forever.

Was there that day. Rushed home to queue for Blackburn cup tickets at lane that night !

Managed to get one of 500 I think it was.

Jonny G scored a similar screamer, a volley at Forest soon after.

Happy days.

I think the Blackburn cup games were the season after - 92/93

You can see all 4 of Lake's goals and on the 91/92 season review.

v Southampton 40:09
v Forest 42:27
v Man City 46:30

Those 4 goals came in just 4 games! remarkable really, he was a peripheral figure for almost all his time at United but then scores a few wonder goals before been a reserve again! Then he leaves Premier League United for 4th division Wrexham! It would never happen these days! The interview from Lake on his time at United is very interesting! I particularly like when Lake says "Vinny Jones was a typical cockney - always had too much to say for himself! Harry used to like to surround himself with Cockneys"! Very much a northern assessment - love it! I think Harry just knew the London football scene better than he did elsewhere and as he'd managed at Wimbledon and Watford he took several from those days didn't he!

Rather plagued by injuries. Think he even broke his leg in a game at Ipswich shortly after signing with us.

That season is still our best league finish since 1975.

I was there that day. One of my fondest memories but being in little cages scared the shit out of me. (Probably still does)

Yeah he mentions been injured regularly at United, and like his brother Paul who many will remember was seen as an amazing prospect at Man City, Mike Lake developed regular knee problems.

To be fair to Lake, he was destined for a good career with United but seccumbed to a bad injury and couldn't get going at that level again.

He was another pick up from nowhere like Paul Rodgers, Mel Reed etc. Was it about 40k from Macclesfield.

Some of those goals would have been fawned over if scored by Messi or Ronaldo. The flick at the near post from Gage's cross was sublime.

I saw quite a bit of his brother Paul when I was a student in Manchester and used to watch Citeh a bit. He was brilliant until he did his cruciate ligament, a skilful footballer of the type you could imagine going on to great things. Mike Lake was good, but his talents were a bit wasted in a Bassett side where you weren't exactly encouraged to linger on the ball.

I believe Paul Rogers is the last instance of a player being signed from a Non-League side (Sutton) that has gone straight into a First Division (or PL) side and it will probably never happen again.

What about Bob Booker? Six foot tall and signed for f*** all.........

Not as popular, John Gannon too. In fact nearly all the United team from that era!

fond memories .... i was 8! crowds seemed fucking ballistic in comparison back then.

And Rogers took a pay cut!

I also thought Jonas Wirmola was a good find. A bit underutilised as he was strong and pretty quick.

Despite him being capable of the odd rick, I also liked Roger Nilson, he would have been excellent now wing backs are coming back in. Quite surprised he didn't score more as he had a thunderous shot.

I wonder if Flo's wrist ever got any better?

Final thought on the Forest match, I recall Clough describing us as giving him the screeming ab dabs! Whatever they are! Digressing a little here but was nice when Cloughie noted in his autobiography how when we confirmed their relegation a season later how "the good people of Sheffield/Yorkshire" (I paraphrase) were singing his name. In fact I feel a bit choked writing it. Good memories :)

What was it about Flo's wrist!? Superstition? I agree on Wirmola! I was gutted when he soon left back to Sweden. I remember him having John Fashanu in his pocket when we played them!

My recollection is he had one great game against Wimbledon, then looked a bit pants thereafter. Fully agree re Roger-pronounced-Rogue-er Nilson however.

Agree Wirmola looked like he had some promise but not the consistency , The first half of that Wimbledon game Flo looked like he been fed on raw meat , second half & other 40+ games I've seen better centre forwards in Sunday football . Nilsson & Rogers were steady performers
Can't remember which match it was might have Man Utd at home in the fa cup when they won 3-0 at our place & BBC were covering it I watched the re-run don't ask me why? and all I remember was John Motson with that stupid over pronunced Rogue -er Nilsson & Rogue-er Nilsson that , got right on my fkg Brad Pitts ended up having to turn it off , another one was ex pig Francis when commentating on European Cup and kept giving it Inter Meeelan all the time , I j wanted to climb through the TV & bang his lights out .. tosser ..

Sure it abolsutely threw it down before the match at Southampton. It was then a rush back to the station for the train to Waterloo, dash across London to Kx for the last train, in those days at 20:00, to Doncaster. Sure Marwood scored that day. Don't think we bothered trying to get Blackburn tickets the next day as some people were already queued up on the Saturday.
Couldn't believe the 5-2 at Forest. Seeing Gannon score that goal was akin to seeing us score at Wembley. E.g.: he kicked it with the standing foot! We've scored at Wembley!

Correct re tickets. We got back from the Dell by 8pm after travelling like luneys! A few there already and loads joined queue within a couple of hours .

Jonny G was a real rub of the eyes that day !

I was there also and remember zico very well!!. Gannons screamer at forest was class. Happy memories indeed!!.

Whatever happened to fans celebrating with that sort of zeal? Rarely seen these days.
