Assuming we sign O'Shea what will be our best CM 3?

Fleck, Duffy, Coutts, Carruthers, O'Shea.

Is Fleck secure on the left with Carruthers or Coutts on the right and O'Shea or Duffy in front? Who is cover for who?

Or is O'Shea a cover for RWB?

Is there a lefty as cover for Fleck?

With 6 strikers for 2 slots, 4 WB for 2slots, 5CM for 3slots, 5CB for 3 slots it will be a fascinating few weeks.

Any insights?

The midfield 3

Fleck is the best all rounder and has the best defensive/ tackling ability.
Duffy is the most attack minded, best dribbler/ most creative but can't tackle/ lightweight and gives the ball away the most.
Coutts is so comfortable on the ball and a great short passer ( often sideways) but can't tackle.

I'd say O'Shea is a replacement for Duffy, both asked to link midfield with attack.
And Carruthers is a replacement for either Fleck or Coutts.

We have a nice midfield playing some very attractive one touch football but it lacks bite and sometimes they seem obsessed with keeping possession ans scared to shoot.
Only Fleck and Carruthers offer some bite and can be combative when we face a midfield battle.

The only one who is a must start out of the 3 is Fleck for me.

I think he'll stick with the same team / formation initially and then switch to 4-4-2 as games progress or change of tactics needed, bringing on Samir/O'Shea for a defender with Hanson for Lavery.

Being the pessimist that following our beloved Blades for so long has made me, I'm worrying that this wealth of midfielders and attackers might be our undoing because CW might struggle to identify his best side and be constantly tweaking it over the next few games, which could cost us. We've also not got any natural wide players and I think we're a bit light at the back. As I say, this is just the pessimist in me trying to work out how we'll cock it up this season and it would be just typical for the football gods to allow us to fail due to too many players whereas in the past it's often been not enough cover that has done us. I just hope that my belief that CW has everything in hand proves correct. God I waish it was May and all over......I don't think I can take all this entertainment and good news trying to make me optimistic .

You're over complicating things. We haven't signed a CH so Sod's law is that both JOC and EEL will get injured, so will Freeman so our back five will be Bash, Wilson, Wright, Lafferty, Riley. And one of those will get injured in the game we had to win to secure automatic promotion. And another in the play off semi.

Thanks BB. Makes me feel much better.

Just chuffed I'll never have to watch Chris Basham's style of 'football' in the middle of the park ever again.

Gi' o'er. We've had far worse than him, last season for a start.

I'm not using last season as a barometer, I've forgotten about that. He's just far inferior to our other midfielders, we look half the team with him in the midfield. It showed against Bury, we were awful up to Duffy and Coutts coming on.

It should mean the end of Scougall.

Carruthers can cover every midfield position but is more likely to replace Coutts or Duffy in the current system.

O'Shea will be cover for Duffy but could also play off the striker or wide in a different formation.

I expect to see us play 4 in midfield on plenty of occasions, I think it's the way we should go at home. A diamond of Coutts, Carruthers, Fleck and Duffy will be far too good for anybody to cope with.

As long as we accommodate Duffy I'm easy.

Hopefully. He's a trier, but has zero quality on the ball.
He might be half decent in the championship funnily enough, where he has more time on the ball. Here as soon as he has it he's bullied off it, no strength or presence.

Failing that, back to Scotland for him - because Leagues 1 and 2 are far too physical.

Most L1 midfielders are inferior to our three.

Why would he get more time on the ball in the championship? From the games I watch, which admittedly aren't that many these days, it doesn't look like you get much time on the ball unless your first touch is like Coutts and you have the ability to turn away from your man as you're controlling the ball.
