As most of us feel that we are entering a season with a 'fear of the unknown' there's a good 2 page spread on the Championship by Mick McCarty in The Mail.

Amongst other things he described us as 'A big club and have real momentum' and 'They won't be coming into the championship thinking they don't belong'

Its a good read from an experienced Championship manager, he clearly rates Wilder. his promotion favourites are Boro, Fulham and Villa - the Pigs don't even get a mention

Good bloke is Mick. More to him than the 'kick it...kick it harder' mantra he gets given by some.

No nonsense bloke who still carries himself with dignity at times despite his willingness to front up. Loved it when he told the Wolves fans to fuck off when he got booed for that late double substitution. Ended up clawing two late goals back and then in his interview after said he'd happily take on any of the fans abusing him at the end.

Agree above, would have been a great fit for us in years gone by imo.

I agree with him completely, even down to the 3 teams most likely to go up. I would also chuck Derby, Norwich, Cardiff and maybe Wolves in front of the truffle hunters.

I'm unsure why people would think the pigs are a good shout to go up.

They weren't great last season, and haven't strengthened.

BIG wage bill though

That Karankor, what a bellend:

UNITED did brilliantly last year and have a very experienced coach.

They are a massive club who haven’t been in the Championship for a number of years.

It’s a club I’ve never been to but I imagine it will be very difficult to play there because the crowd will be really excited to stay in the division.

But it will be a challenge to do it. Chris Wilder has done a massive job and I hope they can stay up.

Billy Sharp was top-scorer and has Championship experience so he will be very important.

In summary 'I haven't got a fucking clue'.

Usually talks sense does Mick.

Not sure I would want him as our manager but he keeps teams going in the Championship.

I had to laugh when Mick said this last week, but I think he's spot on...

"But when you see Middlesbrough spending £7m on Ashley Fletcher... There was me, like a pillock, ringing up trying to take him on loan! I’ve tried for him in a couple of windows and was only speaking to his agent yesterday. He must have been laughing right up his sleeve".

“Then you’ve got Wolves spending £15m on a holding midfield player (Ruben Neves from Porto). I’ll be amazed if this can continue and be sustained. I know that some teams still have hefty parachute payments, but Sheffield Wednesday haven’t had one for a long time and spent £10m in the last window, while Bristol City have spent £5m on a striker (Famara Diedhiou) recently.

“It’s bonkers the money that’s being spent. I’ve said to the lads today ‘it doesn’t matter what they spend’. We’ve just got to do it the way we do it.”

Something wrong with Krankies summing up. He mentioned the Blades as a "massive club" but not the pigs. Think he must have got it wrong, anyway with the position at least.

He hasn't had a clue for a couple of years. His attempts to keep Boro in the PL were embarrassing.

As opposed to Aitor Karanka who says we will be fighting relegation..even though he says he would like to see us stay up!

Don't even merit a mention in Rod Liddles preview in the Sunday Times.

Straight talking and down to earth is how Mick McCarthy always seems to come across, I think he would've suited this club as a manager but we've got Wilder and Knill now.

I don't know whether Mick McCarthy would have suited us as a manager but, when he was in his prime, I'd have loved to have seen him as our player.

Barnsley lad, tells it like it is. Actually he's got to be one of the longest serving managers in the Championship now

Just reminded me of the Barnsley team that McCarthy played in, entertaining and had all you could hope for in team attitude. Perhaps not quite good enough to gain promotion but I recall them being good to watch and they punched well above their weight.

He is the longest serving manager as it turns out – he'll have been there 5 years come November. The length of the 2nd and 3rd longest serving tells you just how volatile the Championship is – Neil Harris and Carlos Carvalhal respectively, both of whom have been in post for not much longer than two years.

Karanka is rhyming slang surely. Shame but I think McCarthy will just tip the grunters manager for the Championship sack race this season.

Good achievement for this era, especially considering all he's done is keep Ipwich safe. Wilder is 39th out of the current 92 longest serving managers. Crazy times

Surprised Karanka bothered to turn up and give an interview. Would have been more his style to sit it out at home instead.

They had a good season and finished stronger than most around them (all of whom seemed to collapse) and they progressed from the previous season.

I think I’m right (from what my piggy brother in law said) that they also have a couple of long term injuries in the midfield, part of the reason why they sacked their medical team.

So I can understand people in the game expecting them to be up there again.

However, your point is absolutely crucial. They haven’t strengthened on a team that was often found lacking defensively and now have a lot of strikers, but still little to supply the strikers.

Tactically Carlos was quite shambolic and the way they set up in the play offs was a little embarrassing. All this does is fuel expectation, however, as the piggies tell us: “It’s a different league now”

Looking at recent spending by the parachuted few, there are some huge money signings, not all will work, some will flop, but that top 10 is much, much tougher now.

I’m fairly comfortable with the opinions we see, that we will be just above relegation perhaps up to top half. I think we might actually sit somewhere mid table which suits me. I don’t see us fighting relegation, but neither do I see us worrying the top two. If we’re midtable by Christmas we might be able to kick on. But In reality I think we’re all fairly happy if we stay up. Wednesday have a real issue if they’re not top 6 at least. Carlos to be gone by Christmas at the latest. Megson to replace him.
