Apologies if this interview has already been posted before, but great little piece from Doyle from after the Charlton game last season, fast forward to 2mins 48secs: https://audioboom.com/boos/1978298-...-how-we-brought-it-you-on-bbc-radio-sheffield

Doyle has had a lot of stick from fans over the years, but this just goes to show how much he loves the club. Good to see fans have been behind him this season and he appears to have won supporters over. I would think this might be his last season with us, hope he can finish on a high!

Well done Doyle, he's turned it round since Nigel came in. (as have many)

Yes it's good to see. Since Clough's arrival, his shots are now landing in row U instead of WW and his passes are now within the required two yards of their intended recipient. Way to go Doyler... Whooo Whooo.

Doyles ok...

Its took him 4 years to become ok..

Sadly, we need better than ok next season...

and what the first couple of years showed is how shit the management was with players like Doyle - we lived for ages on the back of a certain Mr Evans.
A lot of problems were masked by Ched and it just goes to show the management in the recent past has been at best average, when we deserve MUCH more.
No we don't deserve to be anywhere we are presently not - but the fans deserve better and for me, Clough and his FULL management team (including his brother) are going about it the right way - yes with errors here and there, but on the whole the oil tanker has turned and is now going in the right direction.

Looking forward to Coventry at home and Rochdale next week - we seem to have a spark igniting...................

For me he has to be in the team. We don't have anyone else that can do that role. Yes we have better footballers than him, better technical players - but he's the glue that holds the midfield 3 together, he's the only voice we have. The players respond to him as captain. He does the ugly things that others wont take the responsibility for, and does it all getting flack from a lot of fans.

And I tell you something, he doesn't hide or duck out of tackles, and if anyone of the other players get targeted by the opposition he'll go and fight their corner.

Yes, we'd probably need an upgrade on him IF we went up - but only an upgrade, not a different style, every team that wants to play football needs at least 1 player to do the ugly stuff.

I've said before, since Clough came in I'd like to know the win % of our games when he's in/out of the team.

This thing about him turning it around's rubbish. He's not the one who's changed with Clough, fans have just chosen to notice it now. First season down he was class, and his only bad spell was early Weir. As mentioned above, in his time here, whenever he's not played we struggle.

Even when he had his bad spell he never shy'd away from the press or fans, or hid on the pitch.

The Doyle type of player are always the unsung hero , who have a thankless task , when there game is built around put in the foot in , tackles , challenges . Not always appreciated by fans , but appreciated by team mates.

When promotion comes , we will need a younger Doyle . As you say he is the glue that holds the team together .

Mr Clough dad had one with John McGovern.

We may have that player already and I have sung his praises all season - even when castigated by some.
His name is Basham. So rumours are rumours, but it has been said a few times that Basham and Wallace were in line for the2 centre midfield births and it was noticeable that Bash played there last week v Brizzle. Accept totally that some prefer Bash at CH and he does a good job, but if we go up a level then both Basham and Mceverly's lack of maturity at CH will show. They get away with it here, but neither of them are what you would call commanding in the Morgan-esq type of player.

Bash is great on the ball, reads the game well is not frightened of getting stuck in.

As for John McGovern - yes, he was one of a few leaders that Forest had under Clough. Just an unassuming, get on with it, type of player - just the type of players managers love and Doyle is one of those. Thought he was poor early days, but credit where credit is due.

If we could ever get Wallace fit, a midfield trio of Wallace, Coutts and Basham would be able to hold their own in this Division next year. Not sure if Wallace will become our new "Ebbrell" though.

@fullwood.. I can't remember us "living for ages" on the back of mr evans. Not even a full season. .

I've said it before but it bears repeating...

2010-11 Doyle under Adams - part of a midfield two
Under Mickey Adams we crashed to relegation with a team made up of journeymen, loanees and bit part players. None was ever going to stand out and Doyle did as well (or as badly) as most.

2011-12 Doyle under Wilson - part of a midfield two
Wilson's first season was 4-4-2 for the most part with Doyle and Kevin McDonald in central midfield. The surrounding players (Lowton at right back, Williamson at right mid, McDonald in central mid, Quinn on the left) allowed Doyle to do what he does well - break up play and move the ball on

2012-13 Under Wilson/Morgan - part of a midfield two
The second season under Wilson was almost a complete contrast to the first. The lack of spark in midfield as Williamson and Quinn moved on to be replaced by more prosaic players meant that the central midfielders were required to do more - not Doyle's strength and he struggled (as did McDonald, to a lesser extent).

2013-14 Under Weir/Clough
Weir was a disaster from start to finish but part of his favoured 4-2-3-1 required the central midfielders to play the box to box role. As noted above, that isn't Doyle's strength at all and he was as bad as anyone.
Clough brought in a 4-5-1/4-6-0 formation with Doyle's role reverted to the "get ball, pass it on" one which is his strength. He was been a solid 7/10 for the vast majority of the games as we looked to steer clear of relegation.

2014-15 under Clough
We carried on where we left off in terms of formation but loss of form in some players and more defensive tactics from the opposition meant that United have been under more pressure to perform. Doyle's been as solid as ever but there are times when we've needed a more attacking option in the middle of the park; that said, signing Brayford will help massively as he like to overlap, creating problems for the opposition defence/midfield and allowing us to play 10 yards further forward.

In short - I've nothing against Doyle but I do think there's a time and a place for a player like him. Away from home or at home against a better side, definitely. When we're forced to attack, maybe not. What is to his enormous credit though is that he can be relied on to not get mardy about being dropped.

That trio may be quite good - Murphy was also injury prone when he first came. We should just write Wallace off till next August and not even think about playing him. No doubt it's cost us a packet but if Ronnie Moore is correct then he is a class player in the waiting.

That sounds perfect to me player wise, but are you still confident in basham cutting it as a midfielder?
He's bashambauer for us this season

Chranz Bashambauer and Michanja Doylic, the perfect foil for Jamiel Murphsi.

I thought Doyle was godawful in the relegation season but he's been invaluable most of the time in league one.

The season we went down the best midfield player in the world would have looked bad .

I agree he has "potential". When he has shrugged off the embrace of the physio he has looked a classy player, with strength on the ball and vision. I can only assume that the Physio's assistant at BDTBL looks like Kelly Brooke !!! :p

Hoewever, if he doesn't show that he's going to be able to play 40+ games next season, we need to bring in another CM of similar stature and ability so we don't have the same problems next season.

He's formed a "good" but not "dominant" partnership with McEvely at CH, imho. I still think that NC has him pencilled in at CM and that may be his best position if he can play with a settled partnership. I would like to see Wallace/ Coutts / Basham as the midfield 3, but equally Reed / Basham / Coutts may do well as Reed will get some protection from the other two.

I suppose it all depends on what Cloughie wants from central midfield.

NW had Monty and Jags at centre midfield when we went up - the pair were just rock solid without being spectacular and let the "others" do all the fancy bits, which worked.

I prefer a midfield like Reading had that year - Harper and Sidwell - busy, can tackle, box to box, can score etc.

Wallace seems very much a Sidwell type player and it would be very difficult to find a suitable replacement. Think we need to persevere even next season and just let him spend between now and July getting totally fit.

Anyway, lets hope he plays in August one level up. ;)

I agree ..... and I hope we are "one level up" myself. I fear another season in this agricultural Division and I may blow a gasket, with the appalling standard of refereeing ( which I didn't think could possibly get worse than last year but then the ref vs Swindon put me right ).

The problem, I suppose, is that having supported Utd for 50 years, I've become a cynical, pessimistic old fu**er and whilst I've often seen us snatch relegation from a relatively safe position, its rare for us to "do a Bournemouth" and come from mid table obscurity to get promoted.

I agree with you here though ..... I prefer a "Reading" style midfield that you describe since its more exciting than a bunch of midgets being "beaten up" by the rough lads !!

IF, we do the business, and get promoted this year, I will temporarily pause my celebratory drinking session and issue a public apology to the Forum for my pessimism and I will be bloody delighted to do so ....... :D

At this stage though, I feel I'm realistic enough to recognise just how thin our squad is in terms of the ability to perform in THIS Division and for example; if Done/ Coutts were injured or suspended then the technical term is ...... our play-off push is fu**ed !!

Darth, I read your posts and along with a few others, you have to try and be a bit more positive.

I too have seen some right crap since '67 but thinking along the lines of "if Coutts/Done get injured" is just hypothetical. Yes it could happen and I think back to when Millar got done a couple of years back. He had formed a decent partnership with Kitson and was convinced on that day, our promotion chances went up the swanee, so these things can happen.

We just have to take one game at a time and see where it takes us - since our cup exits, it is as though the players are now TOTALLY focused on just the next game, take each one on it's merits, sensible squad rotation, keeping the core team intact and just claw back the points difference slowly. If this football club gets up a head of steam by April time then we are in with more than a fair chance of getting 2nd place.

One thing is certain, the clubs above (Bristol excluded) fear us and a few more wins will heap more pressure on them - that's all we can do - win games of football. We want their fans to say "fucking 'ell, Sheff U have won AGAIN".

Point taken ..... unfortunately I hate to build up my hopes only for them to be smashed to snot

I do think though that my hypothetical situation regarding injuries to key players is no more hypothetical than us going on a brilliant run at the same time as four other teams all simultaneously having a crap run.

Fingers crossed mate ....
