Robson looks at Brown to bolster Blades squad

BRYAN ROBSON could switch his attention to former Sheffield United favourite Michael Brown as he prepares to admit defeat in his bid to lure Celtic's Thomas Gravesen to Bramall Lane.
Brown, who made 174 appearances for the club before moving Tottenham Hotspur in January 2004, is understood to be one of Robson's top priorities in the transfer market.

The United manager had identified Gravesen as an ideal addition to his squad but the Dane's failure to reach a financial settlement with the Scottish champions over the remaining two years of his £40,000-a-week contract appears to have scuppered any chance of signing him.

Robson, who has already signed Billy Sharp, Gary Naysmith and Lee Hendrie since succeeding Neil Warnock in May, will
discuss the matter with his coaching staff during United's tour of Ireland this week but Brown, who has since joined Fulham, is believed to have emerged as a popular choice. However, United, who have also been linked with Watford's Darius Henderson, are likely to face stiff competition for Brown's signature should Fulham decide to sell following reports that Wigan have submitted a bid.

Keith Gillespie made his first appearance of pre-season during Saturday's 3-1 victory over Newry. Alan Quinn, Michael Tonge and Danny Webber scored the goals.

Officials from FIFA, the FA, Premier League and Manchester United meet today in an attempt to solve the Carlos Tevez Affair.

The Argentine's presence at West Ham, who are refusing to sell him to Old Trafford, has prompted United to launch a legal appeal against their relegation from the FAPL.

BROWN IN, BAINES OUT?

Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez has confirmed that Michael Brown, a long term transfer target of Latics, has not travelled with the club on a pre season tour of Hong Kong. He has also conceded that the player is having talks with 'another club' Latics look to be in pole position to rubber stamp an expected £2.500.000 move to the JJB Stadium, although it has also been confirmed that Sheffield United boss, Bryan Robson, is also looking to bring the former Blades player back 'home'.

Chris Hutchings' statement that 'every player has his price' looks set to hit him where it hurts as the club have finally accepted a fourth bid from Sunderland boss, Roy Keane. The two club's have agreed a fee of £6.000.000 for the former England Under 21's left back and he is currently believed to be at the Stadium of Light discussing personal terms. If these can be agreed then it looks more than likely that Baines will pass a medical and sign within the next couple of days.

Lets hope Robson can pursuade him to come.

MANAGER Lawrie Sanchez expects to hear 'within a couple of days' whether Michael Brown will leave Fulham for Wigan.

Brown was excused from the Cottagers' visit to Hong Kong for the bi-annual Barclays Asia Trophy after Latics boss Chris Hutchings lodged a bid to take the former Manchester City midfielder back to the north-west.

Sanchez confirmed no further progress on the reported £2million deal had been made but the matter should be resolved by the time Fulham return to London at the weekend.

"Michael is still talking with Wigan," said Sanchez, whose side missed out on a place in Friday's final by losing 1-0 to Portsmouth.

"It should be resolved one way or another over the next couple of days."
