Merging - it makes sense!

.. not again.. i'll cut and paste my constant response to these threads
you are under the delusion that a single club with gates of 30k plus is guaranteed to be successful.. the experiences of similar clubs i.e. newcastle and leeds might suggest otherwise

What about this:

a much flatter footballing pyramid with two 18 -team premier leagues running side by side. At the beginning of each year, there is a draw to see which teams go into which league. The top 8 from each league are seeded with the top 4 in one pot, and 5-8 in another pot, to ensure that the leagues are finely balanced. The winners of each league have a two-legged play-off to decide the overall winner of the premiership title.

Three teams are relegated from each league each season and they will feed into three regional lower leagues of 20 teams each. If more southern teams are relegated from one division one season, then the regional boundaries are redrawn for the lower teams.

The tv pot will be shared amongst more clubs, and lower league clubs will have more derbies, rather than the ridiculous situation of having skint clubs like torquay and carlisle schelp the length of the country to play each other.

Whilst it makes sense to an accountant.......
I'm an accountant and no it doesn't. I agree with your lower word.

If this ever happened I'd probably be done with football. I am massively cynical about it these days with the abhorrent wages, the closed shop of the prem, the england team and some of the standard of stuff we watch in the championship week in week out.

The main reason I still watch the game is United. If United went to be replaced by Sheffield Abomination FC then cheerio.

What he said.

I can see some of the pro's but it would be the absolute end for me.

Old Hoofy skillfully weened me off away games, I was a whisker away from missing all this season at home but the ramifications of the QPR game have "dragged me back in" BUT no United = game over.

Such a large city as Sheffield, with a large fan-base to draw upon, would easily be able to fill a 50,000+ capacity stadium along the lines of the Emirates

No chance in hell. This new team would struggle to get 15,000.

Fans would only start to come if the team was in the Premier League but it would take this new club at least 10 years just to get there, if ever.

Being a 'sunshine band' member I have enough to moan and groan about. This would probably make the likes of Lenners, Fiery and myself explode. Even the 'clappers' are opposed to this one!?

what a load of bollox.............merging it makes sense.........the only sense it makes is nonsense....perhaps it will form part of wobblegobs next rallying call !

Not for me either, I have had 50 years with United as my team. To be honest if United went under tomorrow, then that is me finished with football. Cannot stand the greed of football nowadays, my passion is Sheffield United, and I may not be what you could call a true football supporter, as I have long since passed the days off watching every game that is televised, I pick and choose those know. I cannot even contemplate standing next to Wednesday fans, and supporting the same Sheffield team, it is not right. Quite possibley United will not win anything in the rest of my lifetime, but that is the only team I want to watch. It is ingrained in me, it is ingrained in my son, and now my Grandson is becoming indoctrinated. I do anything to watch United play, it is my passion, I would rather see them go out of business, then merge with the unclean. Might have my head buried in the sand, and it might be better for the city to have one team, unless that team is United then it is not for me. Financialy it would undoubtly be better for us and them, but not everything is about finance, it is your heritage that counts more.

Is Wobblegob the same bloke you were berating this morning for keeping schtum BB??:fishy::fishbowl::fishy:

Thank god a merge will never happen, the thought of it makes me sick!

UP THE BLADES & fack off piggy scum

There is no such thing as a merger. It is always a takeover. There is always a senior partner who ends up calling the shots. In this case it would be McCabe. In fact, he still has enough change down the back of his settee to do the deal today. But why would he? Why would we support it?

As has already been said, I suspect a lot of supporters would find new places for our allegiences. Maybe Hallam Fc would become a force locally or Stocksbridge Steels for the piggies, as Sheffield FC would for us.

As Winny would say. 'Never, never, never...'

My background is very similar to the above.

I have been supporting the Blades, by choice, for over 50 years, having been born into a "blue"ish family.

My children and their children support the Blades because of me, however, we live away in Lincoln, and regularly make the pilgrimage to BDTBL, but have no feeling nor involvement with the city of Sheffield anymore.

If the teams merged, unless they played in Red & White stripes, played at BDTBL, and were called "United" (which means joined together) then me and mine would make the much easier journey to Sincil Bank, and watch the Red & White stripes of Lincoln City.

I believe a lot of supporters in the same position, from both teams, would do the same and you wouldn't fill either stadium unless in the Premiership.

It makes no sense. What do you mean by moving forward? Premier league and Europe? Not for me SV. I'd go watch Chesterfield instead! A merger of Sheffield clubs would give a massive boost to all local clubs, ok perhaps not dingles but likes chez, Rotherham and donny would do well.

I'm not being stubborn, but I'd rather watch us in the beezer homes league than merge - in a merged club would have meaning to me.

If I want glory I'll follow, inter, barca, man u or man city.

Never let the oinker ruin themselfs not us. Imagine a season ticket seat in the middle of a group of styeites or even traveling to an away game. They split from us 140 years ago and have been trying to destoy us ever since remember they even voted for a reduction of the premership teams as they knew we had a weak team and we got religated. I have seen it in Germany where teams have joined together, the original identity from both teams has vanished, in lots of cases the fans have reverted back to just watching the reserve team or just travel to away games as they dont set foot in the other teams ground. At least we have a soul and even thinking of joining them just to win a cup as I said at the start NEVER:
