Memries of Norwich

I'm sure Blades of a certain vintage will remember Feb. 18, 1989. The Blades were in Division 3 and would be promoted at the end of that season. Dave Bassett had guided us to the 5th round of the FA Cup and we faced Norwich from the top flight at Carrow Road. Around 5,000 Blades made their way to East Anglia using any means of transport (including, according to legend a furniture van). 1-1 at half-time with a goal from Deano, an heroic display saw a goal from Agana before we unluckily lost 3-2.

11th May 1991, the last game of the season and the kop roof had been removed prior to making it all-seater. It seemed that everybody wanted to be on the kop that day and the laughable official attendance of 21,019 surely only counted those on the kop.

23rd April 1994. Although hovering near the foot of the PL table, United finally found some form and lost only 2 games out of the last 13 - beating Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham in this run. A trip to Carrow Road with just four games left saw Nathan Blake score the only goal in a fine 1-0 win. "And now you're gonna believe us, the Blades are staying up!" roared the Blades fans and the Norwich fans applauded us.
Unfortunately, just 14 days later, a 3-2 loss at Chelsea (and an unbelievable sequence of events in other games) saw the Blades relegated from the PL.

I attended the fa cup game down at Norwich when we lost 3-2 that was a great game

When Onuora signed for us, Warnock called him "The best ever Bosman signing!" which I found strange

Warnock said a lot of strange things like that Dutch striker was "the best finisher" at the club. Or signing that bloke from Stockport and calling it a Coup. Or saying that Michael Browns replacement was at the club. Etc etc

I went to Norwich in the 80's we lost 0-4 and Steve Bruce was playing for them that day.
1985 I just googled it.
Also the 2-3 defeat in the fa cup which was a great game and the away end was packed solid that day.

We made very few appearances on MOTD in the 80s but oddly, two of them were 5-2 defeats, Colchester and Norwich, as someone said earlier, the game that got Porterfield the sack after a vociferous car park protest.

He made Patrick Suffo sound he was gonna be Pele and Maradona combined.

Warnock used to seemingly see who's scored goals and sign them.

Fortunately we have a manager that knows about recruitment now.

If we'd stayed up in 07 his first signing would have been Heskey.

Pinchy would have loved another 'hard worker' in the team in front of traffic cone.

F.A. Cup. 1959. 6th Round. Drew 1-1. Lost replay. Crowd: 57000. I was 11 and remember it well.

Great occasion and atmosphere with capacity crowd and marvellous away following..

Was there in 1989 too. Great game, best side lost.
Billy Russell scored after about 3 minutes at my end ( bramall lane ) it looked at that stage like we would walk it! not to be they equalised and played the latter stages of the game with Northcott goalie struggling with a damaged arm .
Norwich were promoted from the 3rd division that season. They lost to Luton Town in the semi but walked out of the 3rd division.

Think it was early into a season (2003?) where we won 1-0 at home, with the only goal in the game being Rob Page's only goal for us. A drive from the right corner of the box that was David Holdsworth esque.

That was early 2003-4. Our first goal after two 0-0 draws v Real Madrid, sorry, Gillingham, and West Ham.

I remember the 5-2 beating in Porterfield's last game. Great early own goal from Paul Smith for them. King Keith got a couple to keep it close at 2-3 but they got 2 late goals. Everyone went to the car park and that was it for Porterfield.

The 2-1 win at home on the last day with the roofless kop was fun. The kop was packed. Agana, injured so much that season, scored both goals and looked like his old self. Sadly that was almost it for him at the Lane.

I remember the 1-0 win at Carrow Road when Blake scored in 1994. I sat with a mate of my who lived in Norwich on the home end. I cheered the goal and no one did anything. Very benign bunch. Did the same the year before when we lost 2-1 and they went 8 points clear at the top of the PL...Cork equalised for us but Mark Robins got the winner.

We were really unlucky against them in the FA Cup in 1997 (as can be seen from the clip above) and at home when Nilsen went in goal and handed them the game. Holdsworth scored a second own goal in 8 days, having got one at Swindon the week before.

Also remember the 2-1 win over them early in 1998-9 mainly because that's the only game I've ever seen whilst sitting in the Bramall Lane upper tier. Funnily enough, the main memories from that game are bad ones - Graham Stuart missing a penalty and Sheron scoring a diving header for them, both at the Lane end.

A compulsory overnighter in my book.

As a Young man onto Yarmouth. Clubs, sea, birds, kebab, music, boozing, dancing and prancing. 3 to a bed.. en suite wasn't even heard of by the landlady, slurry filled condom masquerading as a sausage for breakfast.

Nowadays, the fine city of Norwich and its excellent real ale places. The Fat Cat (best CAMRA pub once year) is a must, a decent hotel with my own bed and more than a sink in the room, a decent curry on that thin long street and retire by 2200 to watch Match of the Day, possibly with a calvados. A very full English in the morning with at least 90% meat sausages from a local butchers and Adnams smoked bacon..

Am I boring now?

I think 'Memries of...' about our next opponents could become a useful regular feature and everybody is welcome to join in (I'm not precious like Roygbiv :D) Next up? Memries of...Hillsborough.

I was trying to remember this one. Obviously freezing as it was Boxing Day and you're right, Dean Ashton was too good for us that day. My most vivid memory was Ashton scoring in the kop end. His goal celebration was a bit of a piss-take and he was rewarded when a bottle flew just past his head. When Norwich scored at the BL end, their players took the piss with a handshake and little bow. Quality!

Any memories of Carrow Road DazBlade88? :D

Er, it's Memries. Can't you bloody spell? ;)

Finally, thanks for the 'Like' Jim Phipps and hope you're well.

2002 I was 18 years old driving my first car (a G reg, 4 speed Nissan Micra- She was called Sheila). The car started smoking about half way down and overheating. Police finally made us abandon it in Kings Lynn as the smoke coming out of it was so bad. We ended up having a kick about in a field in Kings Lynn sporadically checking on the score whilst waiting for my mate's dad to drive from Sheffield to pick us up. We won 3-2 despite Iffy Onoura getting himself sent off.

"On the ball City, never mind the danger,
Carry on, now's your chance,
Hooray it's a goal"

Sticks in the mind from 1959. Exceptional day in a Blade's life all those 58 years ago.
Stood up in the Shoreham corner with John Street with my mother and her pal, got there when the gates opened. Pack-up, sweets, looked down on the ground as it filled. Swaying Kop, deafening roars, 90% were smokers in those days, plenty of cigars matchdays. 3 sided ground, 57000 crammed in to 3 sides with plenty watching from around the cricket pitch. Some big games we constructed temporary seating on the cricket pitch, not sure if the Norwich game was one of those but I don't remember it there that day.

Burnley 6th round was a year or so later. So was SWFC who beat us in front of another full house.

Great memories Finlay.

Went to the cup replay midweek 1975, by coach from Pond Street.

Can't remember game at all but some lads on our coach came back from a pub stop with a full barrel of beer and lodged it on the back seat! Got back to Pond Street about 4 am with work that morning.

I remember the fa cup game in 89. I went there with a couple of mates on one of the many blades travel club coaches. On the way to the ground I fondly recall a pub packed out with blades!( who'd have thought it?). One group of fans were sat around a table with an inflatable doll!!( think erotic Estelle from only fools and horses). The doll did make it into the ground and was thrown around!!. I also remember whilst walking to the away end seeing what I thought was a delivery van only to see numerous blades pile out of it when the back was opened!!!. Utb

Some matches mentioned.

88/89 cup

Beckford in goal

Scramble

After seeing this memries post, I've just deleted a post on Roys view from describing the incredible miss vid almost exactly. Can't remember the date, but it was the last match my ex attended after my lad called them lucky, flukey fuckin cunts at the top of his voice. He did shock me a little also, cos he was only about twelve at the time

That was the first time I'd been on the terrace. I'm pretty sure it was all ticket as my Uncle Frank was on crowd control at the ticket office which must have been on John St in those days. He had a spare given to him by someone and passed it on to me. Was eleven at the time and had been attending for a couple of years before then. My dad wasn't interested in football so would go with my pal on the bus from Lowedges. If that happened today, I'm sure social services would have been called in.
