Memries of Norwich - Pt. 2

This Saturday myself and my son will be meeting my old Norwich supporting schoolmate (friends since August 1973) and his son for lunch before this Saturday's match. Ironically his first match was Norwich v Blades in August 1970. Albert Bennett's goal won it for Norwich. A few years later when I was staying at his house in Gorleston, his dad recalled a funny moment of that match in August 1970 (my mate couldnt remember it), a thunderbolt of a shot from Alan Woodward hit Norwich's keeper, Kevin Keelan, on the chest which amused the crowd. Here is what Peter Howard reported the moment in the Green Un that night "A Salmons free kick to the far side of the box was played back by Badger and Woodward met it with a ferocious rising drive. Keelan knew nothing about it as the ball smashed against his chest and he was so shaken he had to have treatment."

Here is a photo of Woody's shot in the return fixture at the Lane in April 1971 (drew 0-0, Norwich outplayed us, John Hope made very good saves and they had a "good goal" disallowed for a reason that I still do not know)

Woody scored direct from a corner when we won 2-0 at home to Norwich in January 1973

Took us sometime to get going that season 1970/71 but things all worked out well in the end.

Reg Bales writing about that match in August 1970 in the Sunday People (?) said how poor we were and that 'perhaps United should end their dispute with Addison a match winning forward who was badly missed here.'

I went to the opening game of the 1991/92 season at Carrow Road. We'd spent a weekend in Great Yarmouth but I'd left the wife and my daughter there while I travelled over to Norwich.

I parked the car near the ground in a huge car park and as I was walking to the ground a lad approached me and said 'that's the pub you want to be in - that's where all the Blades are'. Now I wasn't wearing any colours and have often wondered is there something about us that signify us as a Blade?

The match itself - we were brilliant. Totally dominated the game. 2-0 up and Fleck came on and in the last 10 minutes (I think) scored 2 goals.

It would be good if our 'Fleck' could come up with a couple this weekend.

It'll be interesting to see how this one works out. I think Wilder has been looking forward to this game following the game at the Lane. They're not going to be allowed to park the bus on Saturday.

Addison was dropped from the team after the 3-1 defeat at Orient 2 weeks earlier after an argument with coach John Short. He was the number 9 in that Orient match and scored our goal. Dearden then took his place. A week after the Norwich game we were losing 3-0 at home to Bristol City but fought back to draw 3-3. For the L**ds League Cup match John Barnwell was dropped so the number 6 shirt went to Addison. Addison played in midfield for most of the first half of the season until his injury in the 2-1 defeat at Luton

Yes, Deane and Hill scored for us. Not long after that day Fleck left for Chelsea
Only blessing was the pigs threw away a 2-0 lead too but lost 3-2 to Villa; guess what it was Atkinson's first game as their manager and return to the sty after leaving in the summer! The evil genius of the fixture list!

Lost 3-0 in 1990 under DB during our 16 game winless run and there was the loudest and longest 'There's only one David Bassett' when the 3rd went in. The Norwich fans couldn't believe and neither could the BBC on Sports' Report.

I saw United win for the first time when we beat Norwich 2-1 at the lane in 1995. I seem to recall them being 1 up and then Nathan Blake equalised on the stroke of half time. Bryan Gunn was sent off during the half time break and it took me until mid way through the second half to realise they were down to 10 men!

Fleck was subbed at half time. Sat on the bench fully suited, gave grief to the linesman and then the ref sent him off to the stands!

Been a couple of times, cant really remember any results so no doubt we got beat! All i can remember is a blade firebreathing from a lighter and nearly setting the complete angler on fire as a light fitting started to smoke and can also remember someone smashing the away end bogs to bits!

We were once on TV away at Norwich in the league as part of the ill fated ITV Digital.

It was an extremely surreal experience watching us play a league football match live on free TV.

I think it was the 2001-02 season and we lost 2-0. Awful game of football.

Now I've posted that I've started to doubt myself and I think we were actually away at Burnley.

Unless both our matches against Norwich and Burnley were shown?

Coach and Horses is an excellent pub. Just be aware also that the Compleat Angler by the train station is no longer an away fans pub, from what I heard it was after they got a load of grief from the Leeds fans not long ago - hardly a surprise when you run out of beer at 1.30pm on a match day though and the landlady had apparently been looking for an excuse for some time to swap allegiances (so to speak) to home fans only.

Queen of Iceni Wetherspoons has been home fans only as well for the entire season so just be careful with that one.

Fat Cat pub is excellent for ale and is literally at the bottom of my road so I'll be starting there and working my way in - anyone fancies a beer there then it'll be good to meet a good few of you!
I know someone from school days who now drinks in the Fat Cat

Woody and Eddy (pen). I was at boarding school at the time. In the next morning a senior pupil told me that he thought the Blades had won but after checking the papers after breakfast, I saw a photo of Colquhoun and Boyer walking back to the tunnel after being sent off and that was when I realised that a senior pupil got it wrong. My Norwich supporting mate was in a much happier mood and tried to hug me but I pushed him away! Not sure who scored first and last. The half time score was 1-1

I was at the '59 cup match in that huge crowd and have rarely been so pissed off at a Blades result.

In the previous round we'd beaten the mighty Arsenal 3 - 0 after a 2 - 2 draw at Highbury ( went to both ) so I went to the Lane full of confidence that we we're going to be in an FA cup semi final for the first time since I started watching us.

In those days that was a massive deal, since the FA cup in many fans eyes, including mine, was even more important than the League mainly because it involved appearing at Wembley and being on TV, the Holy Grail of football.

When we failed to beat Norwich at the Lane I knew that dream was over and felt totally depressed for weeks to come.

Archie Clark was our temporary manager then
