Wait no more! A brief update (Memries of Norwich Pt. 2) coming tomorrow.

Couldn't wait (and bored of reading about those Wednesday nonces).

Not much to add since I did my first ‘Memries of…’ and that was Norwich.

This is just an update from that post – although any other thoughts/memories are most gratefully received.

Obviously, not much has changed since then and our most recent meeting ended with a controversial 0-1 home defeat on September 16, 2017 in front of a 26,218 crowd. Controversial because the Norwich ‘tactics’ that day comprised of barely-concealed timewasting. From their goalie missing no opportunity to delay re-starts, feign injury etc. to the Canaries deliberately coming out late for the second half, Norwich proved cheats can prosper. This game also saw an increasingly-exasperated Chris Wilder attempt to boot the ball back into play. The ball had got wedged between two bags in the technical area and Chris ‘accidently’ booted the contents of these bags – drinks bottles etc. – all over the place. Typically, the referee who had indulged the cheating by Norwich sent Chris to the stand – about three rows behind the United dug-out!

A more balanced view :Dof the game is here:

A fine 1-0 win away at Bristol City last Saturday (13th January) means Norwich are 13th in the league table with 37 points (United have 43). However, their goal difference (F:27 A:31) shows their vulnerability. You have to go down to Barnsley in 19th place to find a team who have only scored 27 goals and Bolton in 21st who have scored less (25). Even rock-bottom Sunderland have scored 29 goals this season.

A previous Norwich star, Alex Pritchard (reportedly bought from Spurs for £8m) was sold last Friday (January 12, 2018) to Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee.

Here’s the good news. Less than three days before The Blades meet Norwich at Carrow Road (on January 20th at 15:00), Norwich play at Chelsea on Wednesday 17th January KO 19:45 in the Emirates FA Cup Third Round.

On December 8th, 2007 we lost 0-1 at Carrow Road, a match only remembered for an incredible series of misses by the Blades, the final – and worst – came from our number 6 (Chris Armstrong).

On 22nd March 1986 in a second-tier match, The Blades lost 2-5 at home. Worth watching for the old kop (if nothing else), some good music and good stuff after the Norwich clip. Crowd? 11,894 (!):

On 28th February 1959 The Blades and Norwich drew 1-1 at Bramall Lane in the Quarter Final of the FA Cup. In front of a crowd of 56,495 saw Russell put the Blades 1-0 up at half-time before Norwich equalised.

Waaait for it! Bit more to come (only five media clips per post). Gimme 5 minutes.

A few days later (4th March) saw United lose 2-3 the replay despite goals from Pace and Summers.

As recently as the 2013-14 season, Norwich were in the Premier League but were relegated. Just one season back in the Championship (2014-15) saw Norwich promoted back to the Premiership via the play-offs, where they lasted just one season and are now back in the Championship.

Manager: Daniel Farke.

Form Guide:

Three straight wins have seen The Canaries climb to third in the current form guide, whereas The Blades languish in 19th spot – but don’t forget the Chelsea v Norwich game on Wednesday:

Full details.

Men to Watch:

upload_2018-1-14_10-32-48.png
James Maddison 7 League (8 all comps.) A good player but an annoying twat who should have had a second yellow in the game at the Lane. Scored the only goal at Bristol City last Saturday (13th Jan.).

Nelson Oliveira 6 (6)

memories of Norwich?? i have one.. we never seem to beat the fuckers!
but now we have CW myth and superstition buster par excellence ;)

You’re about 11 years out with that one – Howard Kendall’s first full season, 1-1 draw in October 1996. I think 6 is David Holdsworth, scooping it onto the post from Chris Short (no.2)’s miscue.

My first memory of the cheating time wasting basterds is Eddie Colquhoun beating Phil nice hair Boyer up in a League Cup tie, then wagging school to go to the replay which we lost after taking the lead

Never liked them

Re the 1986 match, 11,894 was actually a respectable crowd in the context of that season. We were something like 4th and they were top and the defeat led to an angry anti-Porterfield demonstration in the car-park that resulted in Porterfield being sacked and the glorious Billy McEwan reign.
Curiously we always seemed to lose 5-2 on our rare appearances on MOTD in the 80s.

My favourite Norwich memory was FA Cup 5th round on 18 Feb 1989. This was in the days when people still took the cup seriously. We had a terrible record in the cup, even going back to Woodward and Currie days, but 3rd division United gave high-flying Norwich, who were having a great season in top-flight, an almighty scare with Deane and Agana scoring in a 3-2 defeat.

Mark Beard not Chris Short (Short was absent from the 1st team at the time due to stomach trouble)

2-2 at BDTBL. November 1974

The video is from the FA Cup game in January 1997 not the midweek league match in October 1996!

Ahhhh, I thought something wasn’t right. Well spotted!

Team that day:
A Kelly, M Beard, L Sandford, N Spackman, D Hodgson (R Nilsen, 50), D Holdsworth, D White, M Patterson, A Walker

, P Kachouro, A Scott (C Hartfield, 75)

that’s it.. who scored Silent? woody? i think we were winning at one point . long time ago
Woody and Eddy (pen). I was at boarding school at the time. In the next morning a senior pupil told me that he thought the Blades had won but after checking the papers after breakfast, I saw a photo of Colquhoun and Boyer walking back to the tunnel after being sent off and that was when I realised that a senior pupil got it wrong. My Norwich supporting mate was in a much happier mood and tried to hug me but I pushed him away! Not sure who scored first and last. The half time score was 1-1

In the replay, did TC score for us,with the final score being 1-2 after extra time?

This Saturday myself and my son will be meeting my old Norwich supporting schoolmate (friends since August 1973) and his son for lunch before this Saturday's match. Ironically his first match was Norwich v Blades in August 1970. Albert Bennett's goal won it for Norwich. A few years later when I was staying at his house in Gorleston, his dad recalled a funny moment of that match in August 1970 (my mate couldnt remember it), a thunderbolt of a shot from Alan Woodward hit Norwich's keeper, Kevin Keelan, on the chest which amused the crowd. Here is what Peter Howard reported the moment in the Green Un that night "A Salmons free kick to the far side of the box was played back by Badger and Woodward met it with a ferocious rising drive. Keelan knew nothing about it as the ball smashed against his chest and he was so shaken he had to have treatment."

Here is a photo of Woody's shot in the return fixture at the Lane in April 1971 (drew 0-0, Norwich outplayed us, John Hope made very good saves and they had a "good goal" disallowed for a reason that I still do not know)

Woody scored direct from a corner when we won 2-0 at home to Norwich in January 1973

17 visits to Norwich mostly by train. Superb city ..seen the blades win at carrow road twice 1.0 and 3.2. Had some amazing days out there. The worst trip was a 4.0 defeat in 85 we were dreadful .. I have a lot of mates there from the past 17 years when pur 6pm train got delayed till 8pm and we got locked in the coach and horses pub...if any real ale blades are going down try ur hardest to get to tombland area there's a lot of Sheffield history there and proper pubs galore...a word of warning tho and a lot won't take this serious. But Norwich lot I know are out for revenge from the Norwich lads getting put in hospital at the lane a few months ago. Avoid Rocco's bar and the spoons by the riverside I've had messages its pay back time and Anyone who thinks Norwich have nothing are in for shock ..

Forgot to mention ) Norwich are a county team most of there loyal fanbase are from allover Norfolk the liitle towns dereham caistor diss and most of north Norfolk . there loyalist lot are the Yarmouth yellows who follow them and england everywhere in good numbers.. If you keep your head down and enjoy a pint try the murderers pub.

Worse rip off pie ever experienced.. a Delia Steak and real ale carrying a premium of 50 pence. Rubbish. Don't be conned or led into the Delia frenzy.. stay with the regular..

As for the boozers. the fat cat has won the national camra pub of the year. No relation to the Sheffield one, but just as good. If you're staying or are early and in a car the Woodefordes pub about 3 miles out of town has all their products, decent food and a country atmosphere.

Great drinking town as already expressed and you can easily avoid the chav element.

Just avoid her evil pies....

Coach and Horses is an excellent pub. Just be aware also that the Compleat Angler by the train station is no longer an away fans pub, from what I heard it was after they got a load of grief from the Leeds fans not long ago - hardly a surprise when you run out of beer at 1.30pm on a match day though and the landlady had apparently been looking for an excuse for some time to swap allegiances (so to speak) to home fans only.

Queen of Iceni Wetherspoons has been home fans only as well for the entire season so just be careful with that one.

Fat Cat pub is excellent for ale and is literally at the bottom of my road so I'll be starting there and working my way in - anyone fancies a beer there then it'll be good to meet a good few of you!

Remember Terry Garbutt being booked before the game had kicked off. He was trying to take the kick off, ref kept making him re-take until after the third time he booked him. Ref then realised we were kicking "the other way" and he was, in fact, taking a legal kick off. Booking rescinded of course. Lost 2-1, think Ted scored a late "consolation".

Well remember the LC replay in '74. Was November so "mock O'Level" in the morning (Physics), free period in afternoon so two of us just left school and hopped on the coach at Pond Street. Winning 1-0, bastards scored in last minute of normal time (1-1) and last minute of extra time (1-2).
Coach got bricked about 5 miles out of town on way home, about 4 windows back. Spent rest of journey home with all occupants of coach in first six rows as it was bloody freezing any further back. Hated them ever since.

The first match was in February 1974. Think it was Garbett's debut for us. In the next day "The Big Match showed 5 mins highlights of the match. Remember Garbett's booking. Hemsley's consolidation goal was a freakish one. Think MacDougal and Stringer scored for them.

The Blades team coach had a window smashed after the 1-1 draw in September 1972

Darren Huckerby and the little shit Paul McVeigh,Maddison and Gunn, modern day equivalents.

Opening game of the season,United played magnificently 2-0 up in glorious sunshine and all white strip, then Flecks Thunderbird lookalike Uncle scored twice 2-2

August 1991 ?
