Ain't it a good feeling that we've done the business before the weekend has even begun? Anyway, next game is on Tuesday, so it's...

Memries of Fulham.

Our last meeting was on 25th August 2015 when we lost 0-3 away at Craven Cottage in the second round of the Capital One League Cup.

The season before, we met Fulham in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup at Bramall Lane on January 26th, 2014. Leading 1-0 at half-time, the game changed when Michael Doyle was sent off for an ‘off the ball’ incident. Fulham duly levelled and, at 1-1, a replay in the capital loomed:

This video also covers the replay on February 4th. 0-0 after 90 minutes and extra time, Sean Miller finally broke the deadlock in the last seconds of ET. This Cup run progressed with victories at home to Nottingham Forest and then Charlton in the Quarter Finals before finally ending in the semi-final v Hull at Wembley.

The earliest clip I’ve found is 21st March 1936 and the FA Cup Semi-Final at Molineaux. This match between two second-tier sides (commentary by Cholmondley Warner) saw United win 2-1 before losing in the Final v Arsenal, 1-0.

The FA Cup 4th Round tie at Craven Cottage on 4th Feb. 1967. 32,659 saw United draw 1-1 with our goal coming from Mick Jones. The Blades played in all white that day and the Fulham goal was scored by Allan Clarke – later of Leeds United. The replay at Bramall Lane attracted a crowd of 33,279 and we won 3-1 with two goals for Bill Punton and one from Mick Jones:

Also around that era – on April 23rd, 1968 – Fulham won the top tier (Division One) match at Bramall Lane 2-3. Three games later, on the final day of the season, Fulham’s neighbours Chelsea won 2-1 at Bramall Lane after trailing 1-0. John Harris’s Blades were relegated to Division Two and I sat down on the kop steps long after most of the 28,680 crowd had drifted away and (not for the last time) cried.

On 26th March, 1977 me and some mates went down to see us lose 2-3 at Fulham in Division Two. Back then, British Rail did ‘Football Weekends’ to London with return rail travel and a night in a hotel for around £28. Our hotel was at St. Pancras but, back then, the station was a dump – covered in soot left over from the steam era. What made this journey especially memorable was that Fulham had taken to signing well past-it players and fielded the likes of George Best, Rodney Marsh, Bobby Moore and Alan Mullery. However in this game, only Moore featured:

Bobby Moore and a 19-years-old Keith Edwards

Kevin McDonald left the Blades in August 2013 for a reported £750,000 to join Wolves. Despite signing a contract that would keep him at Wolves until summer 2018, in July 2016 McDonald joined Fulham where he is still a regular starter.

Full list.

Since their relegation from the Premier League in 2013-14 (where they finished second-bottom with 32 points), The Cottagers (;)) have taken three season to ‘find their feet’. The relegation season was marked with ownership battles, three managers and a ‘last throw of the dice’ in the January 2014 transfer window when they broke their transfer record by spending £12.5 on Kostantinos Mitroglou from Olympiacos.

On their return to the Championship (surely their natural home?), Fulham spent £11m on Ross McCormack. However, after seven games Fulham had just one point, manager Felix Magath was sacked in September 2014 and Fulham ended the 2014-15 season in 17th position.

The following season – 2015-16 – was even more disappointing and a season-long relegation struggle saw them scrape enough points to just avoid relegation and finish in 20th place.

Last season (2016-17) was far more productive and Fulham reached the play-offs in 6th place with 80 points. However, a narrow defeat over two legs to Reading (2-1) ensured a fourth season in the Championship.

Fulham Football Club is owned by Shahid Khan. Khan completed his purchase of the club from Mohamed Al-Fayed on 12 July 2013 for a reported £150–200M.

During his ownership of Fulham, Al-Fayed had provided Fulham F.C. with £187 million in interest free loans. In March 2011 Fulham posted annual losses of £16.9 million, Al-Fayed stated that he would continue to make "funds available to achieve our goals both on and off the pitch" and that the "continued success of Fulham and its eventual financial self-sustainability is my priority."As of January 2013 Fulham were effectively debt free as Al-Fayed converted the loans into equity in the club.

Key Player? Ryan Sessegnon. (No. 3) A left-sided defender with attacking instincts, he's risen through the ranks quickly, and was a regular for Steve Wigley's Under-18 side in 2015/16, despite being just 15 years of age at the time. Now just 17 years old, last season, he scored an impressive 7 goals in 30 Championship appearances. His current estimated value is €8m. (But then, the same site – transfermarkt – has David Brooks valued at £250k…)

Manager: Slaviša Jokanović.

To date, our League results against Fulham read:

Home: P: 27 W: 16 D: 6 L: 5 F: 45 A: 22

Away: P: 27 W: 7 D: 6 L: 14 F: 35 A: 61

One last pic – Simon Stainrod and Bobby Moore from the 1977 game:

upload_2017-11-18_13-58-7.png

Our team that day was: 1 – Jim Brown, 2 – John Cutbush, 3- Paul Garner, 4 – Colin Franks, 5 – Eddie Colquhoun, 6 – Tony Kenworthy, 7 – Alan Woodward, 8 – Dennis Longhorn, 9 – Keith Edwards, 10 – Gary Hamson, 11 – Simon Stainrod.

My abiding memory of Fulham is winning our final match of the 20th Century against them at Bramall Lane.
I've still got the commemorative silver programme.

Kinell, the keeper and defence must have had a mare.
Midfielders didn't too bad, but what a game Stainrod must have had to get 11 out of 10

Edit: Sorry, it's been that long we had 'proper' team numbers, I'd forgot!!

The boat trip..

Bob booker signed a £5 note for me

Monumental 3 day bender..

I remember being in a club on the Saturday night and love shack came on... I suddenly got my 3rd wind and was up dancing like me dad ...

I think it was Keegan who was the manager of Fulham at the time,a night game at the Lane,we didn't have a touch for about 30 minutes,it was like watching Sheffield United under Chris Wilder, think we got a draw

First memory was that match in 1968. That season was my first relegation experience. Fulham were very poor in those days, always battling against relegation. Just shows how bad we had become.

Took 3 years to sort it out. I suppose that's no time at all when you consider the past six years.

main one has to be that shaun miller header winning with the final kick of extra time after an extremly dull 119 minutes. i was up off the sofa & screamed the house/street down :D

also i vaguely remember Jon Harley scoring worldie in 3-3 draw. but i cant remember if thats because he used to play for fulham was against fulham

The October 77 home game was my very first Blades match. 1-0 down we came back with a Chico Hamilton equaliser and a Woody thunderbolt for the winner. George Best played for Fulham.

Remember Boxing Day 84. Was living in Leicester At the time, brother picked me up on the way down from Sheffield. Thick fog round Luton and still a bit murky at Craven Cottage. Very, dull, very cold, sparse crowd.
Went to get tickets for the 2007 home game and was accosted by Sky cameraman and interviewer. They were asking people what sort of reception Michael Brown would get on his return to the Lane. Wouldn't mind but I was on my way back from the dump at Gleadless, loopy sweat shirt and covered in crap. What a way to make your first tv appearance.

Posted this before but the 3-2 away win on a Tuesday night n September 1985.

Must have been before going back to Uni that year as me and my mate went on the coach from Sheff. We got to That London really early and went to a Wards boozer, ?The Crown?, on Putney Bridge run by a Blade where I remember said mate taking a fortune (to us at the time) out of the bandit.

I think we were behind twice but came back to level and then win and we lost our voices singing and shouting on the open away terrace. The coach back showed some comedies ?Monty Python? and we were creasing up buoyed by the win and the fact we couldn’t speak.

Awesome day out.

"Thank you very much for the 3 points Fulham" remember that one in '85, didn't Steve Foley get 2 goals and yes remember the Wards boozer on Putney Bridge.

My first United game against Fulham was the one at the Lane in front of 28k when Best and Moore played for them and we had Woodward and wee Jimmy Johnstone. 1-1 if memory serves. As for the return fixture in the youtube video above, what was Jim Gray Brown doing on goals 1 and 3! We had a nucleus of some good young players in that team though Edwards, Stainrod, Hamson and Kenworthy, what was Haslam doing giving all those players away on the cheap and replacing them with ageing has beens!!!

The 1936 clip, the last time we were successful in a FA cup semi final.

I was at that game, 28k, thought it was more. We were in a big decline at that point.

The last league meeting was our 2-0 win in the Prem, which was a great evening – Michael Brown was outclassed by Montgomery and Tonge in the middle of midfield, Steadinho got his first goal, and Chris Lucketti was superb alongside Jagielka in the middle of defence.

Remember Kazim-Richards unusual corner kick. He ran to the ball, stopped suddenly and then instantly took the kick which confused the Fulham defence. Not seen anyone else try this corner kick routine

Remember a Tuesday night game when Colin was manager, chucked it down all night, got p***ed wet through going for the bus, p***ed wet through going to the pub, p***ed wet through going to the Lane, p***ed wet through going to the Yorkshire Grey after the match, and again going for the last bus home. Similar in the cup game at the Lane when we got to the semis under funny little Nigel.

When we played them in the FA Cup 3rd round in Jan 1986 I think Edwards scored and the Kop were singing "Are you watching Porterfield?" as Edwards had been dropped the previous Saturday at Shrewsbury.

I was at both games and was there to see Shaun Miller score the winner late into extra time.

Remember in 2001 at Craven Cottage. They were flying in the league, nailed on defeat, Sunday 1pm kick off on Sky, and we decided to go down last minute.

D'Jaffo got the goal in a 1-1 draw, stood on the terrace.

Good day tbh.

I remember the game at Craven Cottage in the Premier League and us being awful. We got off lightly by Bullard going off injured, who had been a real thorn in our side.

I’ve no real recollection of the home game that season, other than it was a night match.

Can recall watching that one at White Rose at Handsworth and a number of tap room Blades taking the p*** out of Tarquin Sterland who was next door in the best room. Tarquin had to smile and go along with it, I'd guess mainly because Clink was with us :)

Who was up against Morgs? It was some lanky fucker like Zamora. He just kept beating him in the air and I thought 'he's going to foul him soon'. Sure enough...

Bullard was fantastic that day, worked ridiculously hard but had real quality too.

Day and a half that.

Shame about the result ;)

Remember hulse and stead ripping them apart in the prem with to get in the form of his life in center mid

Honestly thought we'd stay up after that game

For those that haven't seen it or want to see it again.

200 Blades on a boat

Blimey, that was a proper blast down Memory Lane; some old faces and some very young faces, if you get my meaning, and very poignant to see Debbie with Liam there.

A few points:

Some call me Media Whore Blade, but it's 10 minutes 49 seconds before there's a decent shot of me.

It was fucking cold above deck.

That shot of Battersea Power Station reminded me that at that precise moment I was taking the photo which Asa would later add a pig in a blue and white shirt to, which I would then use as the rear cover to Fever Hitch.

game early 80s boxing day 11 oclock kick off feeling trendy in my patrick christmas present gagool ,season before also 11 oclock kick off thrown out after about 5 mins after fulham scored , mid 80s tuesday night game 2 goals from steve folley

Going off the top of my head, without checking, didn't we play Fulham Boxing Day 1980 (or that Christmas week at least) and defo Boxing Day 1984 as I went to that one, think we lost 0-1. I know we'd play Cardiff away the last Saturday before Christmas and won 3-1 (?), vaguely recall Mel Eves scoring.

That was the 21 November 2000 game. Jean Tigana was their manager, not Keegan. It was incredible to see the transformation he'd achieved. His first full season and he took them up to the Premier League. Wilderesque.
