Yes, Brighton probably deserved a mention. It was that season's Chester, so to speak.

That Coventry game was Boxing Day 1991. All four of the home games v Coventry in that spell were awful (0-1, 0-3, 1-1, 0-0). Our only goal was an own goal by Andy Pearce.

I remember the 1990-1 Coventry home game. Lost 1-0 to a Brian Borrows pen after Cyrille Regis was tripped. Some Wednesdayite won several thousand pounds as he'd bet that we would not win any of our first 10 league matches and Wednesday would go unbeaten in the first 10 (which they'd already done). A depressing day. We didn't look like winning at all.
Games against Coventry, Palace, and Wimbledon at the Lane during that time were usually terrible.

That 0-3 defeat was the first time I'd left a game earlier than a few minutes before the end, after about 66 minutes. We were dreadful and it was absolutely freezing.

It was not to be the last time I left early, in 2023-24 when we were getting dicked 5, 6 and 8 nil, it was nearly every week!

First time I ever left early was that Sunderland game the season before. "United were at sixes and sevens. Or was it sixes and elevens". That was bad! Though the dross was easliy out-weighed by games like Forest and Man. U. I wouldn't want younger viewers getting the wrong impression.

Don't think I'll ever forget the sixes and elevens commentary

The question about attendances - I remember going to the open day in 1989 and having the tour of the South Stand. What has always stuck in my memory was a comment by the guide about a mysterious display above the boardroom door. It was a small black box and he jokingly (not joking?) said it was to show what the real crowd figure was. And from there the "official" number was arrived at. The nudge nudge tone was quite clear - even to me as a ten year old!

Good point on John Gannon - he came up a lot as the most talented player in those ex-Blade podcasts that were made around the lockdowns.

PS Norwich at home. Agana's first (apologies for the VHS quality screen grab):

I wonder how many other clubs massaged attendances like this? Maybe Wednesday have actually averaged 30,000 in the last 40 years!

New podcast out where we talk about the ridiculous period when had Alan Kelly, Simon Tracey and Mel Rees on our books

A bit late listening to this but I'm sure Tracey was called up in a small pool of about 5 standby squad players for an full England squad. But had to pull out due to the inevitable injury. So a bit of a half and half of was he selected to play for England.

Yes in March 1992. Got injured in a challenge by Dennis Wise of Chelsea

I lived on the top of East Bank Road and there were no buses that Boxing Day. It was a long way back up that hill for a 10 year old

Just listened to the last Bassett pod - excellent as ever, and a great mini-series. A couple of things spring to mind - then mention of the 3-0 Bristol City game (first season down) when Gage scored a belter. Can any of you remember the BBC documentary on the prep for the game? Bassett had brought in Anthony Robbins, the US motivational speaker, to help the team (a la when we were in the top flight and had Simon the psycho). All I can remember from the programme is the team being made to shout "WOOOOSH". It obviously did the trick as we won... Robbins was in Sheffield to do an event at the Arena. For all the long ball merchant stuff, Bassett was ahead of his time and doesn't get the credit he deserves. His use of video (including editing methods to keep players watching) and the focus on diet and fitness (Eddie Baronowski, I think) meant we were able to punch above our weight.

On the bad blood towards the end of Bassett's time, I remember Derby at home being toxic and that it kept kicking off on the Kop.

And then, randomly, I was on a long train journey yesterday and got drawn into watching the 95/96 season review (weird, I know). The bit where Bassett leaves is interesting - all very cordial, DB in his office holding court with local journos. I don't think you would see that these days. As for the family that said they were never going again, I'm pretty sure I saw them at the Lane after that ;)

I remember a 0-0 against Wimbledon where my dad's mate stormed out after about 25 minutes, saying that it was obvious that neither team would score in a million years. We were all hoping it would be a 5-4 thriller, but he was proved 100% right.

The 2-1 win against Wimbledon, where Jonas Wirmola completely bullied John Fashanu, was a good game.

I do remember that there was a documentary - but that's about it.

in the game I remember us being 2-0 up in 10 mins and the rest of the game being played out like a procession - with barely a cheer going up when we got our third...

New episode out now where we discuss When Saturday Comes. I'd like to say it's to coincide with the new musical that's coming out but in reality we just wanted to talk about When Saturday Comes

I've been catching up on these podcasts. A great listen.

The "Younited" thing. This is something that has definitely died out. My mother is in her 80s but will say to me "how have Younited gone on?". I know a few people of a similar age who still say it that way. Also if you watch highlights of United home games in the 60s and 70s can hear fans slowly chanting "Youuuunited......Youuuunited"

I remember my cousin being about 8 years old in the 80s and him thinking we were called Sheffield You Knighted and them being called Sheffield You Wednesday

Finished off the Bassett years earlier. It’s been my constant companion through my last 3 gym sessions.

I’ve really enjoyed it. In the modern online world of content creators and people just creating dross just to create more and more content. The Bassett Years was a thoughtful, considered piece that took the listener on a long, wistful walk down memory lane, and it brought back some fantastic memories of my teenagers years.

I’d also like to mention that in a sea of shit of content creators (and some United one aren’t my cup of tea), Roygbiv is a breath of fresh air as the content isn’t about his own ego but its about the subject matter, and educated and informs. A big well done for creating an excellent podcast

Yeah I loved it
Imagine what Bassett could have done for this club if backed the way wilder has been

Love the pod in general
Top class lads been overdosed on Roygbiv last couple of days from drunken karaoke to football chants to board games
Brilliant stuff 👏 👌 👍

Agreed - Bassett worked through all kinds of boardroom shenanigans. Brearley didn’t have the money and sold up to Woolhouse who fucked off in to the sunset leaving us in an even more shit state.

If we had spent £1m out of the Brian Deane money on Kevin Campbell then we wouldn’t have gone down in 93/94

New podcast with KMC-1889 where talk about chants past and present. He honestly didn't choose "Wilder out" as his favourite...

“Oh when the Blades” 94/95 Oldham away - felt like we sang it all game!

Injured player chant…”He’s got foot and mouth” to Alan Quinn when we beat them at their place thanks to D’Jaffo and Asaba. Context…huge foot and mouth out break. We are nothing if not topical 😁

Really enjoyed this.

In the early to mid 1980s, You’ll Never Walk Alone was a staple on the Kop. It died out during that decade.

Keith Edwards had his own song: “Keith Edwards, Keith Edwards, Keith Edwards” etc, to the tune of Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.

There was also

“Colin
Colin Morris
Colin Morris on the Wing”

And “We’ll take more care of you, Porterfield, Porterfield” to the tune of the BA “fly the flag” advert.

Moving on a decade, I remember a 3-0 win at Reading in 1995-6 (the Carl Muggleton game) where “Cheer Up David Pleat” was sung throughout.

Remember “and now you’re gonna believe us, we’re gonna win the league” as we equalised at Highbury in January 1993, with Arsenal fans, who have no sense of humour, incredulous.

There was also “If you can’t beat us you must be shit” when we equalised late at Watford in 1998-9 during our 11 month run of failing to win away.

Take Your Time Sheffield United sung at Norwich as Clayton Donaldson time wasted through injury time on his own is a great memory.

I disagree on one point. “Keep Roit on to the end of the Rowd” is a dirge, especially sung in a Brummie accent. Appropriately downbeat for one of the EFL’s least interesting clubs.
