CONFIRMED McNulty and Scougall released

A lot of people seem to be underestimating how many players we'll want to bring in, not just in this thread but generally.

There will be...

At least one centre half whether Brayford stays or not
Left back/wing back
Central midfielder with athleticism and/or defensive ability
Central attacking midfielder - as well as O'Shea
Winger
Another striker along with Evans
Evans!

That's the bare minimum. Then also probable are...

A goalkeeper
Another winger if the central attacking midfielder can't also play wide
A right back/wing back if Brayford leaves and the new centre half and new central midfielder can't play there - but if we sign Riley (which I think is likely) then this one can be removed as he'd probably be the LWB in the above list


We're not just going to be looking at about 4 signings.

We're losing up to 7 from the first team squad now (before anyone like Long or Brayford leave) - mostly cover players, we'll want to replace them but we'll want to strengthen the starting 11 too - we have to. So 6 or 7 new signings is the absolute minimum.
 



Brayford is championship quality player no doubt, but he not going be in the 1st team because freeman got that spot concreted in with 11 goals + in pfa team of the year & on his wages can afford him & will he want to be on bench every week
 
So what is the core squad for next season

GK: Moore / Long
FB: Freeman / Lafferty / Brayford
CB: Basham / Wright / O'Connell
MF: Coutts / Fleck / Duffy / Carruthers / O'Shea
FW: Sharp / Hanson / Clarke / Lavery
Youth squad players: Whiteman / Reed / Brooks

At least 5 or 6 players needed to give us depth, probably 7 or 8 once a couple more departures get confirmed as per every season

Players needed in my opinion include 1GK , 2 or 3 defenders, 1 or 2 midfielders , 1 or 2 strikers

To that I would add Eastwood GK; Brayford FB; Whiteman and Reed
(or on loan) in Midfield. Evans to Strikers. Slater - Youth team step up.

Evans looks certain to be one of the strikers
Brayford is in my list
I don't think Eastwood is anywhere near playing first team from what I've heard and youth players like Reed, Brooks, Slater and Whiteman need to be considered "super-numery", by which I mean it's great if they progress and make the matchday squad but we need to plan that they won't and have experienced cover for injury's and suspensions. Wilder has both a bit a of space to work with and a lot of key decisions to make
 
Think Scoogs will end up at Fleetwood, their fans absolutely adored him up there on loan and were gutted they couldn't hang on to him.

I'd also like McCabe and the board to actually sell a player or two who we don't want, rather than ones we do want.

Be nice to be quoted on some or other team's roygbiv site as saying "Good. He's fucking useless." or "wish him well, but he's past it and we should take whatever we can for him" or "£5m? Fucking hell. He's been injured most of the season. Nobody tell the cunts!"

I thought Matt Dove deal was up at the end of the season.
 
Always thought there was a player in both of them. Scougall when he first came to us was unplayable, not sure what's happened to him in the past couple of seasons, change of manager and tactics won't help but there's a player in there, expect to seem him at Burton/Fleetwood/Portsmouth. As for McNulty, he's a good finisher but seems to not quite have his head screwed on, if he really nailed down with football I think he could be a decent striker, expecting him at Portsmouth next season. Good luck to both!
 
I wish them both well and if I was Paul Warne, would be looking to take them to Rotherham.

They are both the sort who we could retain or let go both could be of use either as squad fillers or cash raisers

Its how the it works .We look like hes worth keeping to show we arent giving him away. We arent ever going to get back what we paid 2 years ago .hes 2 years older for starters , but he is a good player so its not a bad thing him being an option

Not quite the same Stretch I know, but I was Fukin gutted when Hammond went. No one saw him leave though, apparently.:rolleyes:

But for League One the transfer fees and wages spent last season would be classed as silly money by most of the division!

Wilder obviously did a great job, but he still had a very competitive League One budget to work with.

Agree with this, one of if not the best player of all time is the same height as Scougall.

Scougall just isn't good enough for us simple as that, his height and build isn't an excuse.
 
It never really worked for McNulty here. At times it could have been argued he deserved more of a chance, at times his attitude seems to have held him back. He'll score for fun at a lower level, if, he knuckles down and focuses solely on playing football.

Shame about Scougs. He was absolutely fantastic for a season. Seems to have lost his way a bit and the way doesn't really suit him. He'll,be a great signing for a league 1 club.

I'm surprised about O'Shea being offered a contract. Again, good league 1 player. Not sure why we'd want him in the league above. Still, he's the type of player who can come off a bench and change things.

I was sceptical when we signed Wilson but did a good job for us, when called upon. Solid signing for any league 1 club.
No idea what happened with Hussey. Never at the ball game.
I've got a lot of time for Matty Done. Ran his arse off and one of the factors behind the turnaround for me. I think he'd be a great asset for any promotion-chasing team.

Surprised about Long and Wright, but I can see the logic with the latter. Maybe we think we can get some money for the former?

I agree also. I said he was too small and lightweight and that is part of it, but it's not a reason in itself. The bottom line is he isn't a good enough footballer to compete effectively at League 1 level on a regular basis.

As for Done...well, I upset a lot of people on here early in the season when I said he wasn't good enough. Especially whoever it was now, that started the most ridiculous thread called "The Value of Done" and trying to make out that it was Done's running around like a mad dog that was creating goals for Billy Sharp. All I can say is, Billy's managed to score plenty without him.

We had some folks on here falling over themselves to try and defend Done. One person suggested that we hadn't lost when Done was in the team - but they conveniently forgot to include the first 5 matches of this season where he played every game!

Sometimes, some players, get into fans heads as being something they are not. Blades fans love players who give it 100% - absolutely love it! That's what we expect. And Done was very good at running around like crazy, chasing everything down like a dog chasing passing cars. Some Blades fans loved that. They felt it represented "effort" - which I suppose it did to a point. But there comes a time when "effort" alone isn't good enough. And it was blindingly obvious to some of us on here that this was the case with Done.

I'll repeat now what I said all along...

He's not a striker - we must not rely on him to score goals - the most he ever scored in one season (apart from the season he joined us) was 6. The guy is a midfielder. He is not capable of playing at a higher level than League 1.

Once again, Wilder has seen sense and done the right thing.

Disagree with this.

I agree on the basis that he wasn't good enough when we were playing well and needed a goalscorer but he played a huge part when we were struggling to grind out results, relying on CBs to score and Sharp was out of form. His constant harrying created chances, goals and allowed space for others. It also set the tone in many ways. Yes, he isn't a good enough goalscorer, and yes it's the right decision to list him, but I for one appreciate what a valuable contribution he made when we needed it the most.
