McGoldrick

Even as back up he is a massive improvement on Hanson, Evans and Lavery so it makes a lot of sense to get him in.

Shoot me down but I thought Clarke and Sharp would be back up this season.

Clarke certainly wasn’t going to be. Sharp probably will end up being. Ideally both would, but if we’re only going to bring in one clearly first choice striker then Clarke will surely get the other role, with Sharp and McGoldrick back-up.

I don’t think we do if we get McGoldrick to be honest. If we get another player that can play behind the strikers (Woodburn ideally) then I think we’ve plenty of options up front, with the option of going with two advanced midfielders off the striker if we had some sort of injury crisis.

Clarke had his his best season last year but scored all his goals in bunches which worries me especially as he's 33 now. I can't see him taking us forward next season.

Nay lad. Let me explain...

Always expect the unexpected.

McGoldrick has been a very good, but rather injury prone, player. Whatever we get from him will be a bonus but you cannot rely on him for a full seasons contribution.

Sharp has just 1 year remaining on his contract. There’s no indication Wilder is going to extend that, or I’m sure it would have happened before now. Sharp loves us. We love him. But if gets a chance if another 2 or 3 years money somewhere, either home or abroad, he’d be nuts not to take it. And I think this will be his last season, if indeed he actually stays for the whole of it.

Clarke is an enigma. Brilliant in the first half of the season, unremarkable in the second half. And he’s a track record of injuries too.

Both him and McGoldrick and Sharp are not at the peak of their careers.

Lavery simply isn’t good enough. Even Rotherham don’t want him.

Evans has gone cockle-hunting.

Who else?

You really worry me mate if you were manager thinking like that! We need at least 2 if not 3 strikers or attacking players. We need height and pace up front. And alternatives to the aforementioned for reasons I’ve explained.

Fully fit he’s an asset to any team in the division. Link up play is second to none. Lovely feet and vision to match.

Incentivise the contract with app bonuses and goal bonuses and we’ve got a potential 7 figure player for free

Err neow pal.

Love the optimism though.

McGoldrick is an old crock of a player who’s best years are long gone by. He can still do a job for us, in the same way that a candle can provide light during a power cut. But he’s not going to be our best player, or the next Fleck, TC or Deane or Agana.

He’s just a good old pro who will cost us bugger all and come in handy at times.

Think “Hanson” not “Fleck” and you won’t be too disappointed.
He’s a lot better than your write up of him.

If we go for another striker it'll surely be a target man. I'd like Adam Armstrong but there won't be room for him now.

I'd also say that Waghorn and Sharp could be a good pairing. In fact I'd say all 4 of Clarke, Sharp, Waghorn and McGoldrick could play together in any combination. This negates the need for another target man type.

The concern would be that 3 out of 4 are over 30 years old. McGoldrick's fitness is questionable, and Clarke has been quite injury prone in the past. Another issue could be that we won't have more than one suitable attacking midfielder to play off a striker.

Hope so Eric, but I think I’ve been fair and reasonable tbh. I remember him some years ago at Forest and he was unplayable. Be great if he could be half as good as that, but I really doubt it. I’ve seen him in the Bradford game (stream admittedly - and he was a bit obscured behind a bald blokes head - until they turned the view to horizontal then I had to lay down to watch it), and I saw him live at Mansfield, although he was only half alive at Mansfield, like the rest of them.

You say he’s got “lovely feet” - I wouldn’t know because he’s been fully shoed when I’ve seen him, but I’ll take your word for it. Rumour is his second toes are bigger than his big toes, so that’s another area of concern for me.

We need someone like Neymar, failing that Mbappe.

I wasn’t even counting Lavery and Evans in the equation.

Clarke showed his durability last season. Neither he nor Sharp showed signs of persistent injury last season. McGoldrick, as stated, won’t likely be a regular starter for the whole season so the demand on his body should be reduced compared to last season. Again, I think adding Waghorn between the 4 of them you will have for the most time 2 fit strikers. Ideally whoever we bring in to add to the Duffy & Holmes options will have the ability (like Brooks) to play as a forward.

I should stress that I think this is the last year we can expect to get anything out of Clarke & Sharp starting. But I don’t think we’re there yet in terms of ruling them out of productivity.

Only saw him at mansfield and some of his touches were quality, he looks like hes fit straight into our system.. he does lack the pace of donaldson who made goals last season all on his own by speed alone but as an all round player mcgoldrick offers so much more i think.

From what ive seen admittedly for not very long, if he had cost 250k id have still been happy!

I think Billy wants to go into the coaching side with youngsters. He does all the coaching camps in the school holidays
. So this may be the reason the club are waiting to offer him a new contract at SUFC but not as a regular 1st team player. People dont seem to understand what Chris wants from Leon & why he's so pleased with Leon. Drawing 2 markers .... so someone else isn't marked up & can score from midfield or his attacking partner etc ......inviting fouls ....chasing down 80% of balls ..... being in the opp defenders faces ..... keeping this up for 90 minutes every game week in week out. Leon obviously respects & likes Chris. So he runs through brick walls for him. Not surprising when you consider some of the terrible managers he's had e.g. the Swindon ex Pig Hitler fanatic. So Leon will pull out all the stops again for Chris & the club as he says he is now even fitter than last season. I respect Chris as our Manager so I will always respect his decisions.

Or maybe Cresswell, Shipperley even Windass - players who've come in and chipped in with goals which came as an unexpected bonus?

Even if we signed Waghorn and Mcgoldrick (and I sincerely hope we do as both are quality players), I would still like us to go for one more up top. Either an out and out target man (so we can change things with 30 to go if it's not working and we want more physical presence up front. We might want the option of someone who can knock a few heads about up top and unsettle defenders. Alternatively we bring in someone with out and out pace. Both have their merits but i can only see room for 1 more front player if we get the first two mentioned above.

Best player on the pitch for us by a long mile even though he had nothing to work with except for looping balls and having to come and collect.

Did nothing because he got nothing

Thought bash, JOC, Stevens and Baldock were the four players making things happen
