Hopefully this ends up being a good signing but I'm not convinced with people thinking he will be a direct replacement for Harry, the lad as only four first team games under his belt, Maguire as over 100.
I do hope the lad hits the ground running and shines for us but surely we should not be hyping this lad up to much.

It would be madness to start McGahey in League 1 as one of our main defenders. He's 18 and just has 4 league appearances at Championship level. You need to be 18 with 5 appearances at Championship level, and a red card, to be given that sort of responsibility - as Harry Maguire was in the summer before our first season in League 1.

Thanks for the cheap comment, we were a defender down in 2010/11 when Maguire started with Morgan being injured so we took a gamble with him, we don't need to do the same with McGahey!!!! with us chasing promotion again I would want to start with a more experienced player.

It wasn't meant to be a cheap comment. We've just signed a player that comes highly touted, and we could have signed someone more experienced that pre-season before we started in L1 but instead made it clear that the 18 year old Maguire would be starting. I suspect Butler would start ahead of McGahey, but I don't think there's any reason to write off someone with that level of experience when we can look at our own history and see an example of where a player in similar circumstances succeeded.

I understand your comment and I was not writing him off at all but like with most young players you got to be careful how you introduce them in to the first team, I just don't want to see him sink.
I just don't see why we should throw him straight into the first team when we still have Maguire and Butler in the squad, next season or the one after I do hope he is a first teamer playing every game.

Agreed. If Maguire is to go then what better league than this one for McGahey to gain first team experience. If it was him and Butler partnering each other this season we will certainly benefit from this next season if we are promoted. Maguire has come on so much from learning his trade and playing regular games in League One, and by playing against 'lesser' opposition he can afford to make a mistake here and there.

I don't always agree with this experience is the key business, if your good enough then that's all that counts.

A lot will probably depend on how he performs in pre-season and if Maguire does indeed move on. We've gone to a lot of trouble to get him though, so I'd be surprised if big plans weren't in store for him sooner rather than later...

You know ( presuming Harry goes) this could be great! Butler/Collins with McGahey forcing his way in and Kennedy ( once fit) fighting also..ideally if we get promoted we'll have two young CB's fighting with two established players to take us forwards.

If either of the young un's don't make it we splash the Championship cash!

Didn't realise the age of Baxter and Murphy - we really have a team for the future! Oh yes and the average age would be 23yrs 8 months. Not sure whether its the youngest ever?

The kid seems to have a bit of a reputation. He is only 18 and reputed to have loads of promise but 3 other clubs have already had him and let him go. Let's see what Morgs makes of him, if anyone can sort someone out and develop kids into international class (a la Jags and Cahill) he can.

Been reading a few Blackpool forums, on the whole they are pissed they have let him go. They felt he was ready to step up to be a first team regular and has real potential. So there loss is our gain and like a few have already said looking forward to see how he goes.
