The fact that no other clubs or their manager have received an official approach suggests to me that none of them are actually on our shortlist. Did we really expect United to pay out compensation when there are "free" manager's available?
It's one of many curious features of our fans, that we take as gospel what other clubs say, but always assume that our own club either ignores or distorts the truth (that happens, of course, but so it does at other clubs!)
It's all sophistry. Of course we've made approaches, just not "official" ones.
If you want to know who's on our short list, William Hill's is not a bad place to start.
I'd be happy enough with McCall. Partly because I win fifty quid if it's him (not quite the £205 if it's Keith Curle) but because he's done well in Scotland.
People often cite the fact that the SPL is a poor standard, but two things counter this. Firstly, the level we are at is equally bad. What should count in our favour is that us and Wolves should be like the Celtic and Rangers (pre-financial difficulties) of this league.
Secondly, Motherwell, to my knowledge, were never a stand out team and were as bad as the rest of the non-Glasgow SPL, prior to McCall taking over, so he has obviously done something right to get them up to second.
We can't interview people for the job without making "official" approaches.
When do you think we're planning to do that?

I think the popular groundswell for Robinson is now such that any other appointment will be a letdown for most of us. I can't put out of my mind McCall's spell at Bradford and Curle would be on a par with Morgan or Wilder for me - I'm done. This appointment is of fundamental importance. Just for once, we have to get it right. Robinson feels like the right man at the right time.
That sounds like a come & get me plea to me!
The problem is. IF he is on the shortlist then we would have to ask permission to interveiw him. And that would leak out. I cant see him being on the shortlist TBH.
God help us if McCall is the best we can dojust what did he do at Bradford ??? Oh yes he just managed to keep them in the football league and as for his exploits in Scotland with Motherwell I'm fairly sure Mickey Adams could manage to get them a game in Europe given the dire quality of the SPL
Completely agree. Charisma bypass.God help us if McCall is the best we can dojust what did he do at Bradford ??? Not convinced by McCall? Allow me.
Yes, he didn't deliver at BCFC, but consider the pressures he was working under whilst two men fell out and fought over ownership of the club and the ground. Furthermore, you only learn how to succeed through the experiences of your mistakes. He probably has less cash at his disposal at Mwell than he did at Bradford, but has put together a very easy on the eye team that punches way above it's weight in it's environment.
Secondly, his playing career together with his managerial experience means his network of contacts will be the most extensive of all the candidates. We're skint remember, so I'd see this as a huge advantage if he's able to use that to get us some better players. He also seems well thought of by his peers, meaning bigger clubs will trust their youngsters to him, safe in the knowledge they'll not go backwards.
Finally, although he has played for us, I wouldn't say he falls under the "Blade" heading. Only the Indian Summer of a very long and distinguished career was spent here, but what he will bring is an understanding of the Club, what it denotes and where it's tradition and support should be able to carry it.
Very well argued mi amigo. I'm now, rightly or wrongly, very much a Robinson man. I would, however, accept McCall far more readily than some of the 'elite' on the short list. In fact, it suffices to say I would accept him. Most of the others, Morgan and Wilder amongst them, would see me on the golf course every Saturday, I regret to say.
You know a great deal more about Scottish football than I do. Do Motherwell play proper football? Honestly, now!![]()
