For starters, his record at Motherwell. He's won 5 more than he lost in - to put it politely - an absolutely dreadful league. He couldn't get Bradford up from League Two in three attempts. Maybe I'm missing something but I just cannot see what he can offer that others cannot.

Manager of the year in Scotland, getting Motherwell into Europe doesn't interest me. It's completely irrelevant to the toughness of the manager's job at SUFC.

We seem to be being run like the Coalition are running the country. Julian Winter comes up with a cracking idea of; Recruit better, do it cheaper, do it quickly and get promoted. Well, all well and good pal but how the fuck is that going to happen, really?

The fact is there are no outstanding candidates. McCall & Robinson are better than many of the others so I'd settle for either. I just want it to be sorted soon so we can start preparing for next season because the current squad clearly isn't good enough.

Some probably don't require compensation paying to secure them that would be better spent on the mammoth task that is bringing in quality players.

All of the candidates have failed somewhere along the line, that's why they'll come to a club at this level. We are in the third tier, and struggling financially. Our manager will have flaws no matter who it is.

Cheaper than what exactly ?

You aren't going to tell us that we always chose the cheap option are you ?(urban myth) or that we always employ managers connected to the club(really ) ?

Why not get someone on the way up who has done something? If McCall and Robinson (both of whom have been approached rather than applied from what I've read) - with no promotions in seven years of L1 and L2 -are the best two candidates then there's even more pain to come I reckon.

Bit confused where you're coming from tbh, this is what Winter has come up with. He wants us to go out and sign a Paddy Madden for fuck all. My point is it's easy to say that but if it was easy to do everyone would do it. Having a scouting system that leaves South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire would be a start if we want to recruit some decent players.

Who would you recommend?

The only realistic candidates who are up and coming and have done something recently are Cox at Mansfield, Justin Edinburgh at Newport, possibly Gary Rowett at Burton after he massively overachieved, Davis at Crewe who will shortly be on his way to Wolves, and Richie Barker at Crawley. I wouldn't say they can offer any more than the likes of Robinson and McCall personally.

Apologies,mis-understood what you were saying.

Paddy Madden was a 'nothing to lose' signing. a gamble on a low wage for a player who had not been on many teams radar at the start of the season. If we had signed him in August,or indeed sign someone with a similar reaction this August, can you imagine the abuse that would be leveled at the board and manager ?

In terms of scouting,I don't think we scour the lower leagues(including the conference and below) enough to find these type of deals

We did, Miller. He didnt come with a fantastic reputation and wasn't getting in at Crewe. It seemed to be mainly down to the fans that he got a chance. Started to pay off as well until he got injured.

A Bradford fan's take on Stuart McCall...

"McCall is infectiously enthusiastic, if he gets off to a good start he'd be like pied piper for you.

At Bradford he went crackers, I have no idea why the chairmen introduced him and then promised back-to-back promotions, first job and in the baba league? We didn't even have a team!! His 2nd season team was excellent, they played some great footie but had some, er, characters. One piss up too many and it all blew up in our faces. His budget was slashed for his 3rd term and he was undermined, at every opportunity, by the board. By the time he quit, many City fans feared for his health, he was a broken man.

He'll be 10x the manager now. "

Even the dumb City fans call their joke of a Club 'Bradford'.....ignorance is bliss  - and I agree with OP, not confident, but then I'm a Blade. Confidence and the Blades are not two words that tend to go together...

UTB - FTC!

Agreed, We are in leauge one, there is not going to be any outstanding candidates for us to choice from while we are in this leauge, McCall might not be the greatest manger to roam the earth but we are in the 3rd division.
Just like any manager who ever gets the job at united you can only pray it works!

He won 18 league games from 38 last season, got a runners up medal and a place in the Europa league. I'm with you on the standard of the league although he finished as high as possible (you can't finish higher than Celtic unless you're Rangers).

The season before that he finished 3rd (behind Cetic & Rangers).

The season before that he got them to the Cup final and finished 6th after joining in December.

Last season SUFC won one more league game than Motherweel but played 8 extra games.

Dire league indeed, but take out Rangers and Celtic and then see what his record looks like (i.e. against the teams he can compete against). I've no idea (basically because I can't be arsed) but it must be OK because he finished second last season.

PS. Same point as Matt makes above but beaten to it by a minute.

Oh sorry he hasn't got Bradford, I know everyone on here loves them but they didn't exactly win the league. And do you know were Motherwell finished this season? 2nd which I think means Europa league qualification, which is better than we will ever get and he knows how to use the pace of Murphy and how to get him scoring

I had no faith in Wilsons appointment but in the first season he was producing the best football we have played in ages whilst also winning. Just as I was warming to him it all went to pot. I know nothing and would prefer Robinson out of the two but I know nothing.

Is that a guarantee??

i think most fans are realistic enough to know if we sign a load of promising nobodies, its what we have to do. and we need to give them time to see whos up to it and who isnt. very rare our fans get on the back of a cheap signing without giving them a chance, if anything big name signings get a rougher time if they dont perform right away.

A fresh start; a new model; a different profile. If ever a club needed a change of direction it is SUFC right now.

I fear McCall will deliver more of the same.

McCall hasn't been involved with the club since 2002-2007.
If more of the same involves Cup Semi Finals, Play-Off Finals and promotion to The Premiership, what's the problem?
