It seems to me that Freeman and Robinson were bought half with an eye on if we went straight back down.

We would have no trouble keeping both and they would have played a role in bouncing back.

It just happens that thing went far better than expected.

They are still legitimate signings for a promotion team with the right players around them as per Robinson's decent job at WBA.

There is absolutely zero chance that Wilder signed anyone with the thought that they’d be useful if we went back down.

I know he is a forward thinker but he said that in the past. I'm paraphrasing but he said that was the market we were in and we had to cover ourselves either way. As brilliant as he has been it's a legitimate concern that a newly promoted team would go back down. Happy to agree to disagree but this isn't my take i remember Chris saying something similar. UTB

He did.

I think it is quite clear that he had this in mind. He brought in players who would improve the squad but so the best chance of getting promoted again if necessary. I would surprised if some players werent purchased on a similar basis this season

He’s also said that he never once considered that we’d be relegated. I don’t for one second believe that he spent £12m+ on two players with a view to us going down.

There's a difference in planning for your team going down, or keeping that scenario (quite realistic for every promoted team) in mind while buying players.

For example, we could have splashed the money on 28-33 year old players with Premier League experience, but if we would go down there would be absolutely no chance that they would stay. So that basically means that after relegation, you have to renew your whole squad and that means promoting right back is no option (which is the real reason why most PL relegation team struggle in the Championship the season after)

Players like Freeman & Robinson were probably not the best players in terms of football quality that we could have signed for their tranfer fee's, but they had two big advantages: A. Potential B. Would stick around if we would get relegated.

Not thinking about relegation as a newly promoted side is stupid (unless you were in a situation like Wolves), and the reason why all those relegated teams struggles in the Championship.

I agree with that but Wilder would not have signed those players with the mindset that they’d be useful if we got relegated. He signed them because he thought they were good enough to help us stop up.

If we don't get Cash a good young option might well be Reggie Cannon of FC Dallas. He's an American international and very highly thought of. Don't ask me any more about him becasue thats all I know

Barnsley are heavily interested aren’t they?

OK Blades Sander’s got the number 8 shirt, which means Freeman is off, surely most likely destination for Freeman is in a swap deal to Forest, does this squad number change indicate Cash is on route to BDTBL?

Is it? We haven't even got a backup right back, we've got a backup left back.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. As long as we’re spending more money on the player than our rivals can, the club is moving forward.

We need back up on the both sides especially if Lunny goes. We've got Stevens, Robinson and Osborne to cover left CB and WB positions. With Bash, Baldock and an out of position Bege to cover the right.

Thats why we are after both Cash and Robinson and if we got both in it would leave us in a very strong position.

It’s another left back we need not right back.

Aren't both required? There's currently very limited cover for both (Basham on the right; Osborn/Robinson on the left) and I wouldn't be confident if any of them had to cover for more than the odd game.

It’s also been spotted that Luke Freeman doesn’t have a number at all!
Neither did Callum Robinson either for that matter.
It does look very much that the pair are not in our plans. If Freeman is part of the Matty Cash deal I’ll take that. If funds received for Robinson go towards someone like Dennis then I’ll take that too!

No it doesn’t. He might be off, he might be staying with a different number.
i would be pretty pissed if my number changed to a non-first teamers squad number and i was staying, surely this indicates Luke is gonna be sent packing, pretty ballsy move from Wilder otherwise and i’d imagine itd ruffle feathers

My guess is that Cash is principally earmarked as competition/successor for RCB (Bash role), with Connor Roberts a possible target for the RWB role to cover for GB.

As I said elsewhere, Simon Moore and Leon Clarke seemed fine with it when it’s happened to them In recent seasons.

What I've heard from the Forest end on this, is that we've offered Luke Freeman, Callum Robinson and £4 million now. Not saying this is true, just what the rumours are from the Forest end.

A big offer if true. I could see the attraction to Forest if it is indeed the case but surely that totals more than the £15m asking price.

I'd not give up two players for Matty Cash.

I can see us offering Robinson for him and a bit of money.
