Have I missed something about Shackleton ?
Wasn't it only a few weeks ago that he was going to be of huge significance for us this coming season ?
He can play RB - What's happened to that ?

Anyone trying to put a positive spin on this seriously needs to read the view from.
Read it, 3/4 say he was rubbish 1/4 say he wasn’t. All basing it off premier league football.

Literally the same as our forum whenever we sell or let a player go.

I remember people on here saying they’d drive Kieffer Moore to Wrexham, then he became their top scorer & others who couldnt believe the money we got for Jayden Bogle who’s now one of Leeds better players.

You now have a mix of young and experienced at right back. Free transfer, one year deal so not much risk associated to it…. I don’t see how that could be an issue for anyone.

Because you have dared to cross the Wilderettes in a world where he is the saviour, the upcoming England manager, the chosen one. Nothing negative can ever, ever be said about our Chrisseh. Naughty step for you.

What we really need is some pace and athleticism throughout the spine of the team.

Yes every squad needs some experience but we are desperately short of athletes capable of completing 90 minutes 40+ times in a season.

We’ve got enough older players who are injured for half the season and are blowing out their arse 60 minutes in just cos ‘experience’
Spot on. Of course we need some experience in the squad but Wilder seems to think only players who are 32+ have experience.

What we need is more of the Ollie Norwood / John Egan type experience, players who’ve been there and done it at Championship level but aren’t on a downward trajectory physically.

How many of the top teams do you see with players 30+ these days? Only a handful at Arsenal, City & Liverpool as they prioritise athleticism & pace instead.

How is he on defending corners? Cause last season every corner er we conceded I expected a goal.
P.s. like to know why we really signed him. And i don't mean rb and cb cover. There's something they are not saying about this, gut feeling .
Not ITK or owt but I suspect we tried for Walker but it’s not happening. Hence the space Walker would have tell is filled with a different (albeit levels below) experienced pro.

Hence may not have got any minutes for Wolves since he’s no longer up to Premiership standard. Hence the 1 yr deal in the Champ.

I’d imagine, if we’d have signed the likes of Harry Souttar, by now, this wouldn’t have been as much of a meltdown. People might have thought it to be the addition of nouse and experience which, let’s face it, we had nothing of in the back line last year once Mee departed.

As back up to Seriki it could be worse, if Seriki is now off then its a disaster.

However he must be on large wages for a championship team so hes clearly been brought in for more than back up so let's hope his experience around the dressing room brings positive results.

From club site:

With Chris Wilder stipulating his desire to add some experienced heads for the upcoming season, the Blades boss believes Doherty is the ideal figurehead for his youthful squad to look up to.

Wilder said: "There's no doubting we are getting a player here who knows what it takes to be successful.

"You've got to be a seriously good player to have played as many times as he has for the likes of Wolves, Spurs and Atletico Madrid.

"Matt is a top pro on and off the pitch; he still has a real desire to achieve things in his career, and he wants to do that here.

"He'll drive those standards we are looking for and bring the best out of others in the squad. I've talked about culture carriers a lot over the years, and that's what I see in Matt."

Got to be seriously good to play 400 times for Wolves. Jesus wept.

I feel nothing one way or the other about this signing.

Bit bored of endlessly signing players near the end of their career who want one last hurrah, but the experience is good I suppose.

There must be plenty of experienced younger players around, but that means spending money and trying to attract players who probably don't want to come here.

Surely if he was good enough wolves would be hanging onto him for their promotion push this season?

True, but wolves are a step above us in terms of player quality, budget, expectations etc.

He might well be good enough for our purposes. If we sign a bunch of players like him I’d worry, but one or two is no big deal.

It all depends on the plan for how we use him.

As a starter every week, no. As experienced cover in the Ben Mee/Craig Short type mould then yes.

We don't want a team full of older players but having some sprinkled around will do us no harm.

Not sure what warrants the negativity, he’s an experienced, solid pro who has scored plenty of goals in the Premier League from RB. He’s got another good season in him, 34 isn’t that old! Decent signing for me.

So Wolves binned him but he’s ok for us signing such as him takes us from being promotion contenders to also rans

Some on here can't wait to have a pop. Could it be that we want to give 2 young players like Sachdev and Curtis time to improve before throwing them in?

Have you watched him recently though?

Hes had injury and fitness issues recently. Has looked terribly slow and unfit whenever he has actually played and looks miles off the level of the player who got a transfer to Spurs.

As for loads of goals, he’s scored 6 in the last 6 seasons.

He’s available on a free from a fellow championship club for a reason. He’s not that player anymore.

We needed a right back who was happy to play second fiddle to Seriki. Has the ability/experience to come in and out of the team. Bonus if can play multiple positions. And needs to be free.

Sorry but we aren't getting anyone better than Doherty given our criteria.

If Doherty starts more than 10 games we’re in trouble.

His role should be as a backup to Seriki, the experienced option to come off the bench and help us see out games. If he’s on low-but-incentivised wages I really don’t see the problem with this.

What I do have huge alarm bells ringing about is Wilder once again banging on about “culture carriers”. Leave it out Chris, and concentrate on building a competitive team, not a group of lads who like a beer.

Obviously alot lot cheaper option to Walker, who has spent weeks talking about Burnley.

Strange isn’t it.
Moore
McBurnie

Struggled for goals under Wilder.

Scores for fun at other clubs.

I’m sure Cannon we join those two at some point.

#STRIKERS GRAVEYARD.

Same, he’s a bit of squad depth, so no reason to get excited or pissed off with this signing in isolation. It’s the lack of signings and improvement in the squad as a whole that is worrying.
