So, a first win of the season. Although our window has attracted much criticism, I felt that both BBD and Hamza immediately proved to be important additions. BBD is a genuine inverted winger – physical enough for the contact when he cuts inside. Hamza is pure commitment all over the pitch, even if he does get exposed too high up sometimes! In a repeat of the Swansea game we let them score straight from kick-off – even before finishing the GCB song this time! – and then promptly equalised almost immediately. Having perfected this skill, we repeated the quick response to conceding in the second half! Our best players were Coops – who kept us in it – McCallum – general performance and an assist – Phillips for exerting control and a superb assist – and Donovan – for relentless effort and skill and for scoring a superb winner.

I have said previously that Donovan is not ideally suited to being inverted – he lacks upper body strength, so after skilfully cutting inside he frequently gets knocked off the ball and loses possession. Cue the final 10 minutes when Shack came on for BBD and Donovan went on the left. With his strong foot on the outside in space, rather than on the inside in traffic he gets a brilliant pass from Kalvin and smashes it in from outside the defender. He has the build, speed and skillset to be a superb traditional left-winger.

Turning to my graphs, remember that based on the last decade, I am taking a 92 points target for Automatics, a 70 points target for 8th (playoffs) and an 81 points target for 4th (playoff semis). I’m only showing the first 10 matches on the graphs at the moment, so that the difference between the lines is visible.

Graph 1 plots our progress against those promotion targets, with my forecast for each match that will deliver those targets. After four games, we are still exactly on my 2 playoffs lines. I genuinely believe that we can get to 70 points and 8th place this season. My playoff lines diverge at the Norwich game – where a point would keep us on target for 8th place, but a win is the target for keeping us on the 4th place target line. Also, we are still only 2 points behind the target for a Top 2 finish!

Graph 2
is the comparison with our last 2 seasons – and with 6 points we are now 6 points ahead of last season – as we had no points from our first 6 games (!) – and we are still only 2 points behind Wilder’s 92 point season in 24/25.

I waited until after tonight's matches to post this, so that I could have the up-to-date table – some green at last!
On 6 points with a GD of 1 we’re now 8th equal with identical points, GD and goals scored to Birmingham– supporting my playoffs possible argument above.

So, Norwich and Brooks at the week-end. They haven’t started as well as I thought they would – losing 3 of their 4 games - lost 3-0 to Millwall but they hammered Burnley 4-1. I can see there being quite a few goals, and a 2-2 draw or 3-2 either way. We may well need Coops to have another good night!

With regard to wingers and inverted wingers, in our best years under Wilder we had a left-footed wing back and a left-footed centre back on the left (Enda & JOC) and similarly on the right (George & Bash). They formed overloads by overlapping and underlapping, and we scored many of our goals from low crosses with their strong foot.

Against Bolton our second goal came from a cross by Sam on the left and the third goal by Rom on the left. There is certainly a strong case to play wingers on their natural side for at least some period in each match.

On the pitch we're doing pretty good results wise. Yeah it's not pretty, we still need more players and the boardroom is far from ideal but we're still unbeaten 😍

He played well, but was VERY exposed for their 2nd goal. He's stood on the halfway line and they played straight over the top which forced Tanganga to come out and cover, which in turn meant one last dominant figure in the box for the cross

But then McGuinness and McCallum both inexcusably left the man in between them and neither jumped

He was out of position on the first also, he had a shocker and I'm struggling to see why we signed him.

Has his man just peeled off him in the top photo? Looks a really strange position he's taken there, until reading properly I assumed the lad on the inside was his man, but clearly not the case.

No he's following one of the midfielders and runs with him towards the left back who plays it over him. Can see it here at the start of the clip. I would say the player he's closest to is Phillips' man.

Interesting on graph 2 that we’re on the same points now as after 10 games last season. I remember we lost CWs first game back at home v Charlton (game 6?), can’t remember the next 4?

We scraped a couple of wins in the next 4, I want to say 1-0s against both Watford and Oxford, with another couple of losses in between.

Won 2, lost 8, fantastic first 10! 🤣🤣

Just seen I’ve been beaten to it, although good to know my memory is still somewhat functioning correctly.

Still looks a bit bizarre that he's following the midfielder in. Even if he'd 'passed' the winger over to Japh, you end up in the situation that occurred - tricky winger against your centre half, meaning he's not in the middle. Not to say that the 2 that were in the box (and Sam M had pulled in to be fair) couldn't do any better - in fact, they could barely do much worse, for all the cross was a good one!

That was just wank. A few seconds before the ball was crossed someone near me said "He's going to score a header here"

That was the easiest fucking free header any striker will have this season. Haaland could have put his slippers on and then nodded that one home.

Correct
Banish the 100% inversion perversion !
Let wide players swap around.
Gives the opposition full backs a tougher time mentally & physically.
First they have to remember is he cutting inside or going outside me.
Then they have to deal with him.
That moment of hesitation is all that's needed for players like Rom to fly past.

Father in Law said when it was Tanganga chasing him down - "where the hell is Hamza?"

I think any of us on here would have nodded that home, had about a decade to decide.

Probably could have brought it down and scored as well.
