Match Thread - Blades v. Bristol City

All depends how cohesive the team looks when we first kick-off in my opinion. We're mentality quite strong and comeback from a goal down at the lane.

Blades 2 Bristol 1 - If we don't hit the ground running, we've got a lot of new signings and a mixed pre-season I can see us conceding early.

Blades 3 - Bristol 0 - If we do show cohesion and teamwork from the start we could really damage bristol

Think you will be bang on the money with that starting 11 Wilf....for the subs I would say MaGahey & McNulty in for Reed and Porter.
 
New season, new optimism. For me, City have the best squad in the division... But we're Sheff United, and we do what we fucking want.

Apart from the rumours about Higdon's fitness, he won't play because:

  • He's just arrived & doesn't know the set-up or his team mates.
  • 2 or 3 days living in a hotel is hardly good preparation to start.
  • House-hunting etc.

I think it'll be September before we see the lad.

What i would say is i'd like Baxter to come a bit deeper and interchange with Scouggs,get the ball down and dictate the game for us,thats what Baxter will be good at if given the chance imo.Scouggs has to play,in pre season he's played him out wide and he's quite clearly shown thats not his position,let him get the ball in the middle and scare the shit out of defenders and win us loads of free kicks for Baxter or Davies to slot home.

I think you will find that the text read "could all come on to be impact players" there Matt - nothing ambiguous about that dropped bollock that can deflect my annoying pedantry with such a swift and nonchalant gesture as you attempted in your repost, feller ;)

I think he will get time off in the week to go house hunting.
 
We can make do for now with McNulty and Murphy I reckon. Thrown super Sub porter on for the last 20 for a brace. :D

Just hope Higdon is ready to play catch up cos porter will have at least a 5 goal head start on the lad.

Murphy up front as he's not fit and does have quailty
Flynn to be replaced by Khan if he flags.
How 'fit' is Higson hence may be stuck with Porter who has looked OK when coming on and scored when he didn't.

They could all come on as impact subs. Just not all in the same game :p
 
For what its worth, I think you will beat us on Saturday.

Lots of opposition fans have us down as serious promotion contenders but we still have problems defending and I reckon that will show up on Saturday.

We have no problem at all going forward and will score for fun (47 goals between JET and Baldock last season with JET contributing about 16 assists as well). We've added Freeman who looks a decent player and the midfield looks fine.

But you don't get promotion by conceding goals and we concede too many.

2-1 to you Saturday.

For me Doyle has to start, basham hasn't shown the qualities to take over his role and there would be a big hole in midfield without Doyle.

If Wallace is fit I'd start him I've been very impressed with what I've seen so far, if not I'd like to see scougall drop in alongside Doyle.

Baxter has to play for me he's our most talented player would be great to see him in his natural position behind a striker.

Also been very impressed with McGahey, not so much with Butler.
We'd really miss Collins in my opinion especially his ariel presence.

Doyle represents the hole in midfield ...... he is the weak link and has been for 12 months.

Think people are being harsh on Doyle (and this is from a dyed in the wool Doyle-Knocker). He was excellent at the back end of last season and if he carries that form through, he should be in the first team mix.

Starting to get jittery for Saturday. Really don't know how it will go and hope we don't get a tonking to start the season. I know there's no reason why that should be a realistic outcome, but still...

I'd go:

Alcock - - - - - Butler - - - - Collins - - - - - Harris

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Doyle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And I think that will be what Clough goes with.

However, when others are fit, I think that will change with Higdon and Wallace definitely in the first 11. I also expect us to change to a predominantly 4-4-2.

Brighton made one bid which was nowhere near acceptable and it appears that he wants to stay for this season anyway. They would have to make a stupid bid to tempt the club.
