That is true, but the odd thing is that our two fixtures immediately after the Boxing Day debacle were against Grimsby Town (who finished top) and Blackburn Rovers (who finished second). You would have expected us to have lost both matches and yet we drew with Grimsby and beat Blackburn.
It was a good response and seemed to suggest we had put Boxing Day behind us.

It seems there was a delayed response!

However, in all honesty, the warning signs had been there earlier in the season. Our lofty league position was really built on a purple patch between the middle of September and the latter part of October. In that 5 week period we won 9 out of 10 matches. That gave us almost 40% of our points for that season.

Outside of that period our form was really quite patchy all season.

I went to the last match of the season at Grimsby,almost 20000 crammed in Blundell park,got beat 4-0..
relegation the season after,Porterfield came and we had that magic season in division 4
One more decent season then we had to wait till Harry took over to put one over the pigs

One of my all time favourites too. Always played on the front foot, and always looking to make something happen. A joy to watch. If ever you're feeling low, watch the 30 odd seconds between the Snorters equalising and Duffys goal. It's the precise moment when the equilibrium changed and we became the bigger club again. 😁😁😁.

Really sad how it ended, as he could have had a year in the Premier League, instead he had a season drifting and gas now ended up at Fleetwood.

We shouldn't underestimate how significant Duffy was in the history of our club. Lunny is also part of that history and culture

That goal made me smile...the control and balance is poetry in motion.
Time and time he showed he was a class player under Wilder..

It will forever be one of life’s mysteries how he only shone at league 1 level.....he consistently struggled at Championship level before we signed him.
Can only think he’d found his level as a winger and it took Wilder to have the foresight to move him into a more central midfield (floating) for him to find his strength.
He was our version of the Spanish Magician David Silva..
 



Good luck Duffy, him and Vas Borbokis are two of the most skillfull and enjoyable players I've seen in a blades shirt. Maybe Fleetwood can sign Borbokis too for that wingback role. Be nice if we got Fleetwood in a cup when were allowed back...as long as they didn't beat us.

Still my favourite player of the Wilder era, and until we sign a world class playmaker I honestly can't see anyone replacing him on that pedestal. His close control was as good as anyone I have ever seen, certainly in the flesh.

'That' goal against the Pigs will always be the stuff of legend, but the goals against Villa, Rotherham and Wigan and his numerous assists always spring to mind too when I think about him.

I really wanted to see him have a crack at the PL, but it wasn't to be.

I’m willing to bet that he will never get a good nights sleep for the rest of his life because of his/agents self inflicted decision. He would have featured on numerous times last season ,instead he was warming Stoke city’s bench. Imagine being as good and important to us as Duffy was, and not having had one minute of premier league football to your name because you, or your agent, were as thick as f#ck?
 
One of my favourite ever united players. But can’t help but think he’s kicking his self, he would probably be in our premier league squad now if he wouldn’t have gotten too greedy!!
 
Yep, bet he wishes now he’d kept his gob shut and at least got the season started and seen how he got on.
If he’d backed himself and proven he could hack it in the prem he would have earned a new deal.

Having seen comments from his missus and father it strikes me he was getting whispers in his ear that pushed him to make a poor choice rather than concentrating on his football.
 
Fleetwood 1-2 down at half time in cup to-day in cup to Wigan. Duffy comes on for second half they win 3-2 and he provides the assist for Cheds winner and second goal of the game. Hope Fleetwood draw the pigs in the next round that would be interesting.

If I was in his shoes I’d be devastated. Going from a successful and inspirational team, on the best trajectory of my career.... then missing out on the Premier League due to my own incompetence and ending up at Fleetwood.

It wasn’t exactly selling Deane and Fjortoft on the same day, but it was such a big shock to me - it was one of those moments where I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news that he’d left.

What a brilliant player he was for us and what a sad ending.

Perhaps the most incredible thing about the Duffy saga is that we got rid of one of our most influential players, and still managed to progress immensely. What a credit to the management!

My dad took me to that Grimsby game, I was only a young un and we didn't get there til late on, all fans in the ground but outside it was carnage the blades had wrecked the place. We called into a shop outside the ground and the owner was moaning about united fans wrecking Cleethorpes. The game itself Grimsby could quite easily have had double figures but Blades fans were magnificent throughout. Prompting reg brealey to buy the club, then he brought in porterfield, Edwards, Morris, et Al. It was also Sabella's last league game for United.

I've seen a couple of the fan cam things from inside the ground just after they've scored, with the dear old rust bucket rocking with all the snorters bouncing their little trotters off, what I always love is that "just a minute" moment when they all stop and within a few seconds bouncy killer Duffy had put us back in the lead. Equally as memorable is that coloured bloke on the top tier shooting all those piggies in the lower tier bit.
Step forward Mark Duffy you were and still are a f***ing hero at the Lane.

we took approx 7000 to that game,they had a striker,Kevin Drinkell,scored 3 but should have had 6
I look back now with fondness,but that was such a disappointing season

Yeah remember we took loads, the away end standing was rammed, we were in the seating behind. Always remember porterfield was always wanting to sign Drinkell, him and Edwards would have been a killer partnership (Deane Agana level). Yeah 79/80 was disappointing, typical Haslam era though, promised much, delivered little. Remember the drive home from Cleethorpes and radio 5 reporting on the pigs promotion, awful.
