Man Utd-Goalkeepers-Henderson update

I suspect we're going to be hearing a lot of paper talk on this one.

Before the JTW I would've said it was a non-starter and the current deal is good for all parties. Now we've shown the willingness to spend money and have such a strong position in the table there's at least a chance. The problem is there's no pressure on Man U to sell players and, if the league finishes how it stands now, do Man U want to be seen selling a hot prospect to a team right up along side them in the table? The thing is, if they have De Gea and Romero still at the club, how much do they even care about Henderson? Their recent record of development and recruitment has been full of poor decisions so this one wouldn't be crazy.

I'd be more than happy with Hendo for another season after this even if only loan. He's a known quantity to us and one we're as sure as anyone can be is good enough for our current purpose. The open question is who else is out there that our growing network is eyeing up?

Offer what figure?
What figure do you think is reasonable for someone who could realistically make 100 caps for England and be rated as one of the top keepers in the world?
Also remember we are dealing with a club with loads of money and zero pressure to sell anyone.
If Man Utd still see Henderson as their future....then surely they’d want 50 million or preferably a buy back clause.

Agree we are developing their player but it’s a mutual benefit....it’s win win win situation..Man Utd, Sheff Utd and Henderson himself are all benefiting greatly.

Suspect the options are
1: Bring him on loan again for another season...think this is the most likely to happen....but it wouldn’t surprise me if Man Utd are a bit cheeky and put a massive loan fee on his head....so could still be really costly just to loan him.
2: The only possibility of buying him is if we agree a clause so Man Utd can have him back in 4 or 5 years for a pre-agreed fee.
This would be like agreeing a 4 or 5 year loan....so at least we have some stability to develop.
3: As any loan fee for Henderson was really expensive....then someone like Ramsdale (if Bournmouth are relegated) could look a bargain in comparison.
We might barter with Man Utd from a position of strength knowing that unless they lower their loan fee...then we have Ramsdale as alternative.

As the Man U fan at work says, the Glazers are just interested in creaming off the profits. £40m + add ons is going to be very tempting for a reserve keeper.

Think the only possibility
Is to buy him for 20-30 million and we accept a clause where Man Utd have the first option to buy him back in 4 years at a pre-agreed fee, say 50 million.
So basically we’d be agreeing a 4 year loan deal.....as I say it would take stupid money to buy him outright....his investment potential is massive.

Can't see Man U agreeing to that. Wendys say that in four years we'll be back in league 1 ;)

Do we have any kind of buy back clause on Ramsdale? He was incredibly young when we sold him.

Surely it’s a rule....otherwise it’s opening up a right can of worms regards corruption/ internal politics/ hassle.

Imagine us playing Man Utd near the end of the season and Henderson makes a Hans Segers like non save playing against them helping them win....his parent club might pay him a secret bonus......or imagine if he played brilliantly against Man Utd...it would piss off his parent club and MU fans could turn against him.
It's a premier league rule.

Further down the pyramid I think it's a contractual agreement.

Of course it depends what Man U decide to do and I agree with most of what you say but we need our own keeper and if they won’t sell at a sensible price which I agree with you I don’t think they will we should luck elsewhere.
Maybe we can start the process on Sunday by beating Bournemouth and sending them nearer relegation and if they go down make an offer for Ramsdale.

Depends who else is in the market for a first choice keeper in the premier league. If we are his only option then we could probably push a deal through. Sadly I think last summer was our best crack at it.

I want us to make an offer, but will take the loan.

If Retsos and Zivko work out, we're looking at adding maybe as close as we can get to a Premier League proven striker, and a CB in summer for first team competition. So for me money should be prioritised on Henderson if we can.

It's going to come down to whether he's ready to leave Man U though. Can't underestimate the psychological aspect. As much as he loves United, he's still in a "I want to play for Man U" space at the moment.

It is an absolute necessity that we get a top class keeper sorted for next season, we know this full well from our own experiences of the last 10 years. Paddy Kenny was the last of a long succession of great keepers we had always been blessed with. After that came a woeful bunch which cost us 6 long years in League 1. Dean Henderson is as good if not better than any keeper we have ever had , and we have all seen what a difference it makes. I happened to be in Bristol last weekend , & went to see Rovers v Coventry. Who was in goal for Bristol … Jamal Blackman. He was OK for us but his career has never kicked on. Playing for a poor team in a throwback ground in front of 7,000 , it made me realise how far we have come, and that we have left the likes of Jamal behind.

Assuming now that we're establishing ourselves as a Premier League club & Man Utd are unlikely to subsidise any of Henderson's wages in a future loan deal, for another year you're looking at around;

Minimum wages @ £50k p/wk x 52 = £2.6m
Loan fee at £2m
Minimum total = £4.6m

Maximum wages @ £75k p/wk x 52 = £3.9m
Loan fee at £5m
Maximum total = £8.9m

It's not a bad deal for Man Utd who have all of the resale value & are also benefitting from his development as a potential successor for David De Gea.

For us I think you're approaching the realms of - we may as well put a permanent offer in. It's a lot of money to spend for the next 1, or 2 years on a loan deal to not have any control over the player's future, or any potential resale value.

The question to ask is whether the loan money we'd have to spend (circa £9-18m over two years) would be better invested in finding our own permanent signing?
Any goalkeeper of equal quality will cmand wages IRO 20-40k , for me it's good business as he will probably earn us 5-7 points in a season

Of course if we beat Man U to 4th place based on goal difference will their Hendo price go up by the millions they missed out on?

Tricky one depending on what other options CW and co have in mind.

Lets say Bournemouth drop, what would Ramsdale cost, and would he be a sensible longer term signing?

I'm all for keeping Hendo because he's probably as good as we can hope for and we know he fits in.

Clearly though we're going to need a replacement in the next couple of years and I assume we're not going to follow a policy of loaning just as a matter of course.

Without knowing the finances involved I'd still lean towards Hendo again unless Man U want absolute piss take money.

Imagine if a Man U win had them qualifying for the champions league and Henderson pocketing a nice bonus?

Of course it makes sense to stop players facing the parent club when on loan.

As with most business decisions, there's risk and opportunity in both options & you have to do the cost benefit analysis to see which route provides best value (eugh, corporate speak).

There are also a lot of emotive, intangible factors at play too. I mentioned in another thread that it's clear to me that Henderson is the heartbeat of our dressing room. He makes a big effort with new signings & the coaching staff love him. The defence have built up a rapport & trust in him too. The fans also.

My personal view is that we should pursue whichever option allows us to keep Henderson the longest. If that means loaning him for the next 2 years, I'd probably be willing to sacrifice some of our budget to do so.
Very difficult to put a price on this. It’s a very important part of the club ethos, that has been built by Wilder. It cuts both ways though. Would his personality be valued in the same way at Man U or any other club. He appears to be positive and genuine in this aspect of his game. He also has great rapport with his GK coach here too.

If we cannot buy his quality, style and attitude elsewhere, we should look to buy him outright. This assumes Man U are willing to sell, and the lad actually wants to build on what he has already achieved at the Lane. It would obviously cost big money, but IMO, it’s worth the long term investment.
