Man Utd-Goalkeepers-Henderson update

Assuming now that we're establishing ourselves as a Premier League club & Man Utd are unlikely to subsidise any of Henderson's wages in a future loan deal, for another year you're looking at around;

Minimum wages @ £50k p/wk x 52 = £2.6m
Loan fee at £2m
Minimum total = £4.6m

Maximum wages @ £75k p/wk x 52 = £3.9m
Loan fee at £5m
Maximum total = £8.9m

It's not a bad deal for Man Utd who have all of the resale value & are also benefitting from his development as a potential successor for David De Gea.

For us I think you're approaching the realms of - we may as well put a permanent offer in. It's a lot of money to spend for the next 1, or 2 years on a loan deal to not have any control over the player's future, or any potential resale value.

The question to ask is whether the loan money we'd have to spend (circa £9-18m over two years) would be better invested in finding our own permanent signing?

But when you look at it another way, we’re a premier league club but going into our second season, possibly/ probably in Europe and in need of a bigger squad, we’ll need more outfield players perhaps spending £30-40m more In adding more quality to replace Besic and the two other loanees if they don’t stay. Bash, Billy, Jags and McG are all a year older...

Spending less than £10m to have such a fantastic keeper for a season is perhaps better than £40-50m for the same.

I think it will depend on where we finish. But if we make Europe or better still Champions League, then I’d say that it’s a good deal for us

Tough one this as hes a great keeper and fits in brilliantly. However if weve no chance of him ever being our player, and hes made it pretty clear he wants to play for Man U, should we be looking for a permanent keeper ? We arent in the championship any more and we arent skint so we can afford a top class keeper.

I dont know what the answer is but I'm sure Wilder does !!

Henderson is too good to be sat on someone’s bench. He’s competing to be England’s number 1.

I wouldn’t be opposed to having him for another year on loan but I’d love it if we smashed our transfer record to sign him permanently, if possible.

They’ll be other clubs queuing up for him in the summer.

I wouldn’t want us to spend £30m+ On him this summer until we’ve built the outfield squad up more.

If we had the option in 2021 to buy after another loan season then stick that in then deal.

It’s also a big time for Man U. If they don’t make Europe this season they will go backwards again. They can’t really sack OGS as they’re not as attractive to the big names outside Europe.

I’m hoping they continue to go backwards as if they do and we’re in europe, why would Hendo want to play anywhere but Bramall Lane

He’s not worth the 50 million that Man Utd would want ......they want to keep him so would want silly money to even consider it.
it would be short sited to spend our whole budget on 1 player in the Summer
especially when we can keep him next year for a fraction of the cost and it still enables us to improve elsewhere.

Regards Henderson it’s all about priorities and opportunism.
Goalkeeping is a vital position, so I think we will be looking at permanent solutions.
For example if Bournmouth are relegated thren surely their goalie Ramsdale would be on the list of possibilities.

I suppose that‘d be down to how big a ManU fan he really is. If it’s his lifetime ambition to play in the to tier for the club he supports I think he’ll grab the chance if it’s offered. The fact that it’s also arguably the biggest club in the world and will pay him top dollar would be the icing on the cake.

Quite simple IMO - Utd should get the best possible keeper for next season regardless of whether that is via a perm or loan deal.

I can't see how Utd would possibly get a better option than Henderson.

Well said. Make a bid.

Looks good for another loan move next year hopefully.

Man Utd would be stupid to not cash in on de Gea whilst his stock is high. Henderson is good enough to take the number 1 spot. Then they can go out and sign another "Romero" type backup GK for about £10m.

I just hope OGS disagrees with me.

Shame he's not allowed to play against Man Utd - only two games a year (unless we meet them in a cup) - I think he would play out of his skin to impress OGS. Could be the difference for another 3 pts this year.

Does anyone know whether this is a FA rule that a player on loan can't play against his "owner" club or is it an agreement between the two clubs?

How much you reckon? 30 million?
Man Utd would just laugh.
They’d be saying that he looks nailed on to be a regular England international keeper for many years and could be one of the best in the world in a few years.

Think the only possibility.
Is to buy him for 20-30 million and we accept a clause where Man Utd have the first option to buy him back in 4 years at a pre-agreed fee, say 50 million.
So basically we’d be agreeing a 4 year loan deal.....as I say it would take stupid money to buy him outright....his investment potential is massive.

The main question is who would be willing/able to afford DdG even if they wanted him. On top of his transfer fee (£75m??), his salary demands will be huge (currently £350k/week???).

The only club rich and daft enough to even consider paying that is Real Madrid and they of course already have Courtois so I suspect DdG will remain at Man Utd for at least a couple more seasons.

PSG?

Surely it’s a rule....otherwise it’s opening up a right can of worms regards corruption/ internal politics/ hassle.

Imagine us playing Man Utd near the end of the season and Henderson makes a Hans Segers like non save playing against them helping them win....his parent club might pay him a secret bonus......or imagine if he played brilliantly against Man Utd...it would piss off his parent club and MU fans could turn against him.

If we're in Europe next season, I'd say it's time to capitalise on that and attract a top class permanent keeper (preferably Hendo). The goalkeeping position is too important to continue to put off signing a permanent.

The other thing is we could easily finish above Man U, will they want to loan out a player to a club that finished above them? Let's face it, there will be plenty of other offers from England and Europe to take Hendo on loan.

As with most business decisions, there's risk and opportunity in both options & you have to do the cost benefit analysis to see which route provides best value (eugh, corporate speak).

There are also a lot of emotive, intangible factors at play too. I mentioned in another thread that it's clear to me that Henderson is the heartbeat of our dressing room. He makes a big effort with new signings & the coaching staff love him. The defence have built up a rapport & trust in him too. The fans also.

My personal view is that we should pursue whichever option allows us to keep Henderson the longest. If that means loaning him for the next 2 years, I'd probably be willing to sacrifice some of our budget to do so.

If Man United let Romero go in the summer, I'd be very worried they will want Hendo back as competition for De gea. If they can promise him all the cup games and Europa league games, maybe he'd accept that for a season!!

I’d have no problem with loaning him again so we can strengthen up front next season. We can’t solve every problem in one go.

They’ll have to qualify for it first.

Offer to buy Hendo and if they refuse then (although I think Hendo is class) we need to look elsewhere.
We are a premier league team now and need a permanent keeper we should not be developing a player for the long term benefit of another rival club, rival club you may ask?well just look at the league table definitely a rival now.
I think that decision one way or another will be made at the end of this season as we now have one chairman in total control

Courtois was loaned out for three consecutive seasons by Chelsea to Atletico Madrid. Ironically he was brought in to replace De Gea.

In the third of those seasons they not only won the Spanish League but he played against them in the Champions League semi final which Atletico won.

Chelsea then brought him back, as by this time he was clearly a ready-made replacement for Cech and Courtois was immediately first choice keeper.

Unless De Gea is sold, which isn't that likely, I don't see Man Utd replacing him with anyone. It would be a big risk to change such an important position given their fragile situation. And De Gea is contracted till the end of 2022/23.

I would have thought Man United will want another loan for Henderson somewhere. Eventually they might then be able to bring him back as a highly experienced top level keeper they've effectively got for nothing.

If it means we get third season in the Prem then i'd get him back on loan next season. Even if it costs more in loan fees than that of a permanent signing.

Premier league rule states a loan player is not allowed to play against his parent club.

What figure do you think is reasonable for someone who could realistically make 100 caps for England and be rated as one of the top keepers in the world?
Also remember we are dealing with a club with loads of money and zero pressure to sell anyone.
If Man Utd still see Henderson as their future....then surely they’d want 50 million or preferably a buy back clause.

Agree we are developing their player but it’s a mutual benefit....it’s win win win situation..Man Utd, Sheff Utd and Henderson himself are all benefiting greatly.

Suspect the options are
1: Bring him on loan again for another season...think this is the most likely to happen....but it wouldn’t surprise me if Man Utd are a bit cheeky greatly increasing the current loan fee.....so could still be really costly just to loan him.
2: The only possibility of buying him is if we agree a clause so Man Utd can have him back in 4 or 5 years for a pre-agreed fee.
This would be like agreeing a 4 or 5 year loan....so at least we have some stability to develop.
3: If the loan fee for Henderson is really expensive....then someone like Ramsdale (if Bournmouth are relegated) could look a bargain in comparison.
We might barter with Man Utd from a position of strength knowing that unless they lower their loan fee...then we have Ramsdale as alternative.
