Two people I work with, one born and raised in Rotherham, the other in Sheffield both claim to support Man Utd...

Anyone else almost completely disregard them as people you'd potentially talk football about after hearing shit like that?

At my work there are 2 Arsenal fans and a Man U fan. All 3 from Sheffield and never been to a game. I cringe when they refer to Arsenal and Man U as "we"

They'll never truly understand what it's like to be a football fan

Firm grounds to disregard them as people full stop.

I called in at The Norton after a game and I said to this bloke I'd just been. I'm a Manchester United fan, says he. Why's that then? Because they always win was the reply.

Another time, another idiot. Got off the train late on Tuesday night after a Stockport game. Usual lads on the train so said idiot starts up a conversation. Tried to scrounge a lift to Dronfield and was going to get one till he said he supported MU. Got to the car and get in. Idiot's just about to get in but was stopped by my lad. Lad says to him, only Blades in here, get fuckin walking.

Did we used to run out to it? I know Gary Sinclair played it sometimes.

I can't quite fix the memory Highfield - it used to be played each game rather than as an occasional tune - and it was either the long intro or instrumental bit. Did he used to read the team out to it ?

I disagree. No way is CW going to have his selction decided elsewhere.

There may be an 'understanding' that the lad will make the match day squad but nothing beyond that. We are not desperate enough to take a daft risk and then be stuck with having to play some 'wonder kid'.

The truth is somewhere in between.

Man Utd have let him come to us to get game time and match experience. Wilder will have spoke to Man Utd to explain how they hope to use him and explained his plans.

Of course there's no gaurantee of 1st team football but there will be a gentlemans agreement that he's in contention. There will be regular feedback from the player back to Man U about how he's being treated etc. They could have loaned him to other clubs because he's so highly rated so it's common sense for Wilder to maintain harmonious relations with Man Utd.

I expect Riley to be in the squad (even if sub) virtually every match.

The only thing that used to unite Blades and Owls at our school was administering the odd beating to the token Man Utd fan. If he had been a Manc it would have been harsh. He was a Sheffielder though so was considered fair game!

To be fair I've found most Manc fans do know their history and do show us respect and call us Sheffield United, Sheff United or Sheff U
It's the horrible tones of southerners who know fuck all and just call us "Shef-feel." Who get on my pips.

Exactly right Kenilworth. The Sheffield Cricket team did indeed take the field in Togas, but prefered to wear them Untied; hence Sheffield Utied Cricket and Football Club. The rest is just a case of history and a shit spellcheck.

I'll get me toga.
To be honest we should still carry the words Sheffield United Cricket and Football club in our crest, to further illustrate the fact we were spawned from the cricket club.
Thus underlining we are the "First United"
