Thanks for the research and post Roy. That input made my day. Roll on Saturday when we can see him ourselves. He sounds like he will wake up a number of our current players as he will be able to compete in a number of positions.

Well done CW and his team.

If those comments are accurate, he sounds more than back up.

Lucky lad has come to a proper football club with an excellent young manager, good move for both player and clubs. We desperately need the width, energy and pace that this lad will give us,it's what we are short of,a great signing !!

Lets not get to excited I seem to remember john cofie was the next Pele according to the man u fans .... he's renting out deck chairs on the beach in benidorm now .. probably

We could do with a decent player who can play both in midfield and defensively. We currently don't have anyone like that in the squad.

Music to Pinchy's ears. Actually, music to my ears too

On the scale of ex/loan Man Utd signings will he be a Michael Twiss or a Paul McGrath? Keith Gillespie is the other decent one that springs to mind. Notable mentions for wankness also to Lee Martin, John Cofie and most of all Bryan Robson. Alex Notman was ok I think from memory, do we have any more in recent history?

Suspect half of them have never heard of Sheffield let alone SUFC!

...or know that we ARE THE ORIGINAL UNITED.

They were still 'Lancashire and Yorkshire Railwaymen' when we started as the first football club to be called 'United'.

They play in red too, so using the Wendy logic, they just want to be like us.

We're not the original. There was at least one football club using the name 'United' before us but they no longer exist. We are the oldest surviving 'United'.

Name and source please?

Sheffield United Cricket Club were the first team to use 'United' in connection with any sports team or association. We were formed from them although maybe some other jealous wankers nicked it for a year or two?

Who that then?
I thought our name derived from the "United" cricket club and it was the first use of United for a cricket club that gave us the name when they started to play togga in the winter months.

Do your own research. Whilst we are the oldest sports club called United we weren't the first to use the name for a football team. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of the club and haven't got time today to go looking for it.

Hanover United. Now called Polytechnic.

Further to my previous post, Google has reminded me its Hanover United. Which is annoying because I drove past their ground twice this morning.

Exactly right Kenilworth. The Sheffield Cricket team did indeed take the field in Togas, but prefered to wear them Untied; hence Sheffield Utied Cricket and Football Club. The rest is just a case of history and a shit spellcheck.

I'll get me toga.

Why not give him a run at Stocksbridge on Monday. Stoke have a good 2nd team squad. Would ensure a few more fans for the Under 23s as well

My understanding is Plymouth United were the first football club to use "United" in 1877.
We started using it when we were formed a few years later in 1889.
Of course there was a Sheffield United Cricket team well before.

Thanks Roy. To be mentioned with Denis Irwin (probably the best Premier league left back) is praise enough.

(I know some of you'll disagree and think Delboy was!)

Personally I always loved David Barnes and that perm! Back in the days when full backs never crossed the half way line and they took the man first, then ball!

I've always thought over the years that we've never had a left back that has truly become a fans favourite or a left back that has been of outstanding quality. Its probably the only position I would say that about as I can name many good right backs, centre backs, goal keepers etc etc. Roger Nilsen had his moments but in my view ultimately wasn't consistent, Dave Barnes as I say was a favourite of mine but can't say he is a cult hero or especially good. Tom Cowan was reasonable but I wouldn't say a fans favourite like we've had in other positions such as on the right. I know Del played on the left at times and is definitely a cult hero but I still see him as a right back.

In recent seasons I thought David Unsworth was quality in the season we got promoted but in my eyes ruined that when he slid on his knees scoring the pen that relegates us a year later! I think not many would have him in their favourite 11 after that! I certainly don't!
