Man Utd and Man City interested in Diego

So supposedly many Premier League teams are sending scouts to the game to watch him? What game are we talking about? Because he won't be playing against Bradford I'm pretty sure.

Question for those ITK people who watch junior and reserve matches - is Diego better than say Jacob Mellis at the same stage? We accepted £1m for him and he turned out to be an average player. Jordan Slew was an even better deal for United.

In honesty, agents get these young lads big moves and not all of them go on to be successes. Personally I would like to see him play for us over a reasonable spell of games but who knows how good he really wil be until he gets some matches under his belt.

Another Diego, De Girolamo could add an extra dimension to the Yorkshire derby between Sheffield United and Bradford City tomorrow.

The 18-year-old, born and bred in Chesterfield, is hoping to be in Nigel Clough's first-team squad after 10 months out with a cruciate ligament injury.

The teenager, who was being closely monitored by Arsenal, Man Utd and City, caused a stir in 2012 when he opted to play for Italy U18s instead of England after receiving a personal call from the great AC Milan and Italy coach Arrigo Sacchi. Diego qualified for Italy through his father Cosimo who is from Naples.

He played six games for Italy U18s and scored three goals only to rupture his anterior cruciate in the last minute of a friendly against Austria.

A 10-month recovery ensued but he returned to play an hour for Sheffield United's U21s against Stoke earlier this month before a run out against Coventry U18s last week. He scored two goals in 13 minutes before over extending his knee and coming off as a precaution.

However, he has been training with Sheffield United's first-team squad and is hoping for a place on the bench against Bradford with an eye on facing Fulham in the FA Cup also.

Liverpool and Everton, alerted by his return to fitness, are also due to send scouts to watch De Girolamo.

He is still eligible to play for England but Italy have not forgotten him and invited him to an U19 squad camp in Florence just before Christmas.

Its looking almost a certain that he will leave for one of the big clubs if there's anything in these stories. However after seeing Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott go from League One to the Premier League for 10 and 15million, could we hold out and get something like that or will it be a case of first offer gets him??

Lets hope we keep him though, as remember McCabe did say we didn't need to get rid of our Youngsters.

I cant see him going till the end of the season & only if hes played some first team games & got fit.

The challenge is on to the new board.......

Will you just be like what has gone before. Or are you really a new idea in this area?

This one will test the resolve of the Board. If they sell, then we will know that the Prince has changed nothing and that McC was bullshitting again.

we may have to sell. but its the amount thet we are interested in at the end of of the day.

Hard to put a price tag on a player that has had only a few minutes of first team experience. When Arsenal paid an eight figure sum for Walcott and Chamberlin (for example) they had played at least a dozen or so first team games and had performed very well.

If a big club comes in with a punt on young Diego how can we seriously turn around and say he's worth £10-15m? If we did and he ended up in our first team looking completely average then we would feel like mugs for not accepting £3m.

Difficult one to call if someone did come in with a bid. Given the things I've seen and heard, I have no doubt he has great potential but until he puts that to the test we don't know.

Trouble is, you never get anywhere by constantly selling players before you see what their potential is. It's probably safe to say the recruitment staff ar clubs like Man Utd and Man City are better at their job than whoever we have to decide how much he is worth. For that reason alone, we should resist selling unless a crazy offer comes in. He's still pretty much a kid with no experience, even though it seems likes he's been here forever, no reason he should want to move in the next 2 years or so. If we really are serious we should be looking to get him involved, bring in a few others of relative quality and go for promotion. Whatever he is worth now, he has to be worth more if he helps us get promoted next season. Shouldn't be considering less than £5 million and i can't see anybody offering that kind of money for an untried kid who's back from a bad injury.

If we now have money then we must tell them 15million+ we need talent on the pitch. Time to start playing hard to get

Aye, but had not Chamberlain and Walcott made 30-40+ apps for their respective teams? I bet Diego has not made 5.

Means nowt. It is all about how much we rate him. If its high then price him very highly. Everyone's got a price even Messi it's just about how much we want for him not what they want to pay

Disagree. The two Manchester clubs will have a valuation, United will value him much less than this, as we know, and he will go for around £1m, upon which McCabe will tell us that 'we could not stand in his way' and 'its a great deal for United.'

However, if he had 30 league games behind him, we could play serious hardball. Kyle Walker went for, what, £3m on the basis of 2 league games and 3 play off games?

Agree that we will take less for him but we should be telling them he isn't for sale unless they pay silly money

Throw in a friendly and a kid on loan and there's your deal.

How much?? I'd get my balls out and start waving them around at anybody who raises an interest in him. Contract, fuckos. He's got one. Respect it.

Different players, but I'd say yes, though I saw a bit less of Mellis. He's in a different league entirely to Slew.

The hype is daft though, he needs to bulk up a bit for long term league football (he's only young!) and will have games where he's a passenger. He's quality, but football is about more than just skill and vision.

Thankfully, those around him are switched on and will help him make the right decisions. As Flatulent_Bob says, he could have moved to one of them long ago, he's had the chance. If he continues progressing, the time will come, but he needs to make the step up to a run in the first team first.

Don't believe they are just going to watch Diego, they could be scouting some of the quality in our current first team.....

And that's what it will come down to - the advice he receives from those around him. If Man United want him and his family or his agent tell him it's the right thing to do, he'll be off.

Hopefully someone will point out the likes of Mellis (few quid in his pocket yes but he's played 50 games fewer than Harry who is 3 years younger and will be in the same division as him next season) and Jordan Slew and suggest that a couple of seasons at Bramall Lane is the best way of developing his career. The only way he stays with us past that point is if he doesn't fulfil his potential or if we get successive promotions.

Not sure where the inflated valuations for Diego arrive from. Man Utd are currently mulling over an offer for Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic who plays for Roma. Valued at £20million, and playing for a top Italian side, Pjanic is proven thus his valuation. How the figure of £15million for Diego is arrived at may be something I've failed to grasp.

His worth is dependent on complete recovery from his injury, his current form, and what other sides are prepared to commit to.
Forgive my ignorance, has the lad signed a contract with SUFC? If so then I'd suggest we'd be looking at a bottom line £5-8million max, plus add ons, which could then rise to anywhere between £12-18million. It's not an exact science so those figures could be way out, but if he/we were playing against superior quality in a higher division then this would be a deciding factor in any increased valuation.

Everyone's got a price, even more so when you're languishing in L1.
For me the lads got to play games in the first team. ( if he's good enough :D ) He's coming back from a serious injury and I'm sure that's his immediate priority.

If he is good enough, or as great as some predict then the offers will surely come and we'll sell on...well, that's how I see it.

UTB!

We can face facts, either we get promoted twice in two seasons or he'll go, but if or more likely when he does go it should be on our terms. If they want him they can pay and if it were down to me then he wouldn't be cheap. I'd make the fuckers wince when they signed the cheque like they've never winced before. Let other clubs know that if they want our talent they'd better be prepared to dig very deep for them, especially if they've signed long contracts, which they should have if the club have got any sense.

They already tried to get him for their academies. He turned them down then and hasn't established himself with us yet. If he wanted to go into their acadamy he'd already be there.

This hype just get dumber and dumber. He's zero chance of living upto it plus it'll be doing a teenagers ego no good at all.
Too true Bob , remember Everton had a teenager that was full of promise that ended up going to some crappy 3 rd division team Baxter was the lads name I think . ;)

That's what we'd do. We all know it's not what United will do.

That is at least what a few of the papers and gossip sites on the net have said yesterday and today anyway. Young Diego will apparently be included today after good display in the development squad that was watched by Clough or his team. This has apparently attracted scouts of Man City, Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea who will all be in attendance to see him at BDTBL this afternoon if sources are to be believed and Liverpool and Everton are also named as big admirers.

Hope its not these.
