Lundstram

Find this amusing. You do realise we were losing when Lundstram went off, right?! The reason we got a point out of the game was because we reverted back to the tried and tested system. Let's not make out it was due to a masterstroke of starting Lundstram.

We abandoned our tried and tested system when Sharp came on for Basham, switching to a back four. Then we scored.

It was visible -- he created clear goalscoring chances. Wilder will be delighted with Lunny
But that isn't the work I'm talking about.

If we were picking players for their passing and creativity, lunny isn't playing, because we have players who are better at that.

However, He goes with his man defensively nearly every time and he's probably our best at that in the midfield.

But when we pick him, we lose something going forwards. It's a dilemma for wilder

I thought Stevens was MOM. Unbelievable performance given he played in league 2, two years ago.

Lunny was good today though- again

FFS I wish this forum would stop purposely over inflating performances after a decent result.

Ok everybody is giddy but you shouldn't let it cloud too much of your judgement.

He was decent, nothing more.

He played his part in what was a good result overall for us.

That’s how I see it.

Lunnys is like a better quality Chris Montgomery.
Against shit opposition I wouldn’t play him.....when we play good opposition where we might not see the ball then Lunny is like a terrier chasing the ball putting in tackles. His quality is relatively low....but he was probably our most effective midfielder today breaking down their attacks and played OK
Wilder would say “Lunny put in a good shift”, it’s interesting that he might be more important to us in the PL then he was in the Championship.
I suppose Lunny’s main rival is Besic, so will be interesting to see which one gets most games.

He’s OKAY and that says it all. When we have someone like him we always get people that will defend them no matter what and will pick out every good thing they do. Often, it’s not a lot but because they’ve done a good tackle or made a pass that justifies their opinion about the player. Basically people look for any positive. Other, more talented players aren’t offered this luxury by certain fans
Good post, very true.

Agree....you find these days everything has to be either brilliant or shit, people exaggerate to give their opinion more validity.
Lundstrum was neither of those today....what’s wrong with saying he did his job and was OK, no issues.....that’s it.

I did think Fleck didn’t do much and Norwood was below par for most of the game......then when we chased the game in the last 10 minutes Norwood suddenly looked good and was running our midfield. In fact in them last 10 minutes we looked back to our old selves and had AFCB pinned back, the equaliser was coming.

Has Monty changed his name to avoid ( continued) pelters on here ?

A lot is to do with the end result. For example, if a players only real contribution is giving away possession once and one stunning pass, he will be praised for the pass if we win, but criticised for giving the ball away if we lose.

Ffs, 1st game back in Prem after 12 yrs away and all most can do is fecking whinge n moan about Lunny.
Ok its not 3pts but how many would have accepted a draw before the match ?
All players will have their good/bad moments through the season so lets get behind the players and not forget that its a TEAM game and enjoy the season regardless. UTB

People are, it’s just others trying to justify someone’s position who isn’t quite there yet

I thought Lundstram was ok today no worse than anyone else in midfield, created two good chances and one Kozluk like cross into the crowd. I realy don't understand why some fans slag him off, some were at it before a ball had been kicked.
I wouldn't be moaning at anyone after today's game remember more than half the team were playing their first ever game at Premier League level, bound to be a few nerves on show but I think CW called it right we kept it solid and grew into the game against a team who for the last few years have been comfortable around mid table.

Point proven

In fairness Lundstram was the only choice today if we were to play with a DM in a midfield three. We couldn't trust Basham, the Leeds away performance showed his limitations and Besic only arrived on Thursday, but in truth with a bit of luck we could have quite easily got the same result that we got last season at Elland Road.I understand why we played Lundstram today,it wasn't a fear of the opposition it was a fear of the occasion, however,we are much more likely to win games with a more creative midfield.

lunny tracked quite a few runners today and put in a couple of challenges in our box as a result. Would Freeman have made those same defensive runs?

Perhaps Lunny is doing some of that unseen work that many managers admirebut that fans aren't interested in .

Freeman definitely adds something going forward though and Besic still has to stake a claim. There could be plenty of horses for courses this year

Oh know you reminded me of someone with that comment.

Fair comment Barney, but the opposite side of that coin is "we'd have won if he hadn't started" by all the haters, rather than admit he put in an acceptable performance.

Which, is aactually a criticism of Wilder rather than the player if you think about it.

Lunny created 2 for Didsy.... if he scores Lunny would be top on assists in the prem...... not the best at times no but today did a great job and miles better than Fleck for me ..

Lundstram has the unfortunate baggage of coming with the ‘flat 3’ that everyone (including me) worry about. I really don’t understand this attempt to rub the noses in it of those that were concerned about that system and his inclusion. We equalised, and looked more fluid when he was substituted and the formation was switched. Doesn’t that give some validity to the concerns??

Set up 2 of our best chances (Sharp would score 1 or 2 of them). Defensively was very good, loves a tackle. I don’t understand why he’s not s fans favourite as his style of play is exactly what we like.

I've said before that I like Lundstram and always felt that there's a decent player lurking in there.
I think this season will be the making of him and he'll become something of a Blades cult hero in the Bob Booker mould!

We’re finding our feet in this division at the moment and unfortunately we do have to give teams some element of respect because they can all hurt us. Even the Bournemouths of this world have quality players that would stroll through midfield if we go too gung ho.

I think Bournemouth would agree the system we played first half was effective and Lundstram was a big part of that.

Likewise if you also fail to acknowledge that he was responsible for our most dangerous attacks in the first half in that system then you’re living with your head up your arse anyway.

Aye
Not seen any criticism of Didsy for "missing" those opportunities (although 12 months ago would have been a different story!)
