Lundstram Heaped with Praise

I get that Lundstram isn't Coutts but what has Evans done to warrant being so much better than Lundstram? Lundstram has chipped in with a couple of goals and assists. The ball over the top for Clayton at Villa was exceptional. All I've seen from Evans is a neat and tidy passer but doesn't seem to drive forward with the ball the way Fleck or even Lundstram does. The other big worry for me with Evans is without the ball he doesn't seem to break play up particularly well. Freeman's goal on Tuesday a casing point. Coutts is a player made for the Quarter back role as its being called. Both Evans and Lundstram look different types of midfielders and Tufty will play them when and where it suits but to say Evans is better than Lundstram to me seems harsh.
 
A few on here seem to forget that coutts was shite until Wilder transformed him. He was also older than lundstram with a lot more championship experience. We can't lose with lundstram as he'll hopefully carry on improving and progress with us or be sold for a good profit!
 
Thought he had a great game. Not my MOTM though.
 
He played well and would get more goals than any of our midfielders if he started every game, most two footed player we have.
Evans will play against Hull because Lundstram played 90 at Leicester, but he is a great young player to have in our squad.
Stearman MOTM for me. Got a goal and won so many headers against Smith, played like the player I thought we'd signed in the summer.
 
Never seen someone win man of the match berrated and said how poor he has been.

We have a lot of good central midfielders who all offer different aspects. Evans is similar to Coutts style. Lundstram the goalscoring midfielder (which for years everyone has wanted). Fleck the all rounder. Leonard the enforcer.

They will all play a part for years to come.

Maybe try be positive about our players. But saying that sitting in the ground on Tuesday winning 2-1 and fans moaning like mad summed it up for me.

And me. I was gobsmacked when Lundstram was announced as MOTM. I thought Stearman was the stand out performer. I've been critical of him since his arrival but hats off to him on Tuesday night.

I thought Stearman was better in the 2nd half than first half. There were a few times in the 1st half where he tried to anticipate and got caught out. In the 2nd half he was great. Mine was O'Connell just over Clarke who held up everything which is tough against the lumps they have at the back.

JOC was good and Clarke was back to how he was before he signed his new contract , chasing down and giving their defence a tough evening.

He was recovering from a serious injury. He was highly regarded at Preston, Peterborough and Derby, before he was injured. Players of his undoubted quality are not ‘shite’. You may be thinking of midfield legends of former years who ran around a lot but couldn’t play?

Coutts was recovering from a chronic injury when he joined us he needed a full pre season injury free he got it the rest is history

Evans wins mom a couple of weeks ago - "ooh yes excellent signing, neat and tidy, a coutts esque performance,"

Lundstam wins mom - "ooh didn't deserve that, not as good as courts, grumble grumble, gives it away too much, moan moan"

He's a good player - with potential to be a great player. It says everything that threads are started like this even when he's played well. He was better than Evans on Tuesday - lundstram haters won't accept this of course but it's true.

Has’nt Done a deal wrong since coming in.
Distribution sound, gets a tackle in and chips in with a few goals.
Improving every game,Wilder rates him
 
if I remember right wasnt Coutts not loved much at first a bit like Lundtram
didnt it take him a while to become the beacon of our team
Lundstram was brought in by Wilder as he and Knill can see his potential
and they seem to have got it right , what were the odds

I agree but I think Lundstram, like Coutts in his early days frustrates United fans. That's not to say Coutts and Lundstram are exact comparisons. But United fans love to see unquestionable work rate and rightly so. They like the see their centre mids keep it simple or on the other hand have the ability run past players if they can - IE Brooks. Lundstram isn't capable of running past players particularly and his work rate isn't great and he does give the ball away from time to time so I get why our fans get frustrated. HOWEVER! Lundstram has many good qualities that are less appreciated because he isn't, yet, good enough to do it for 90 minutes as Deadbat says. If he did he would still be at Everton.

He can pass a ball both long and short accurately (Villa away the best example) and then when he gives the ball short he is available again to pass it again. He would look outstanding in a 3 touch game - he'd dictate play. However give him time and I believe he'll do that for us. I think he has outstanding potential but we have to be patient and understand he is still learning having come up from League One and is young. Yes he could give it more simple at times but if you want someone to just keep it simple then often you can't break down teams who park the bus. He also has the ability to ghost in at the top of the box to score and he finishes well, as we've seen this season. We really lack someone else who does that from midfield.

You appear to be suggesting that United fans prefer work rate to quality. I wholeheartedly agree with you but fundamentally disagree with them. I’ve had quite enough of unskilled shadow-chasers down the years so I’m perfectly happy to be “frustrated” from time to time by talented players who can control and use a football and are normally a joy to watch.

On your second point, Ryan Leonard was very much that player at Southend. We’ve yet to see it but it’s early days and we had at least a glimpse against QPR.

I think that United fans do prefer work rate to inconsistent skill - not particularly thinking of Lundstram there. Skillful but inconsistent wingers divide opinion at the Lane. I'm thinking of the likes of David Cotterill here, who I loved and appreciated that he wasn't consistent every game, otherwise he'd have not being at United but in the Premier League. You usually get what you pay for, even though Cotterill ws reletively expensive he was still small fry compared to the Premier League.

Personally as long as a player is able to produce his skill more than he does dribbling into an opponent etc, than I'd persist with said payer. Lundstram is worth persisting with I believe and yes Leonard is capable of scoring from midfield and I think he'll turn out to be a really good signing, once he adjusts to this league. Lundstram's problem is that his game is based on doing his long passing as well as short and he loves the glory ball a bit too much. If he can simply things a bit more he'll be a better player for it and as he grows into this league than he'll improve and be able to dictate games more. Evans keeps it simple and that's probably why he's in the team over Lundstram but at times we need Lundstram's vision and ability to score from midfield as otherwise we rely on the front two far too much in our team.

He's not Coutts, he's not Fleck, but he's doing a job
 
For what it's worth, my MOTM (as I said on another thread) was Blackman. I sit on the South Stand, halfway between the away end and the halfway line, and I sit high up, so I get a very good view of the game (which is why I always say "it depends where you sit"). Blackman pulled off some fantastic saves against a very robust QPR.

As for Stearman, JOC, Leon, etc., all had very good games.

Lundstram was not my MOTM but he had a good game and I think he is improving all the time, to life in the Championship. He will know what is expected of him as a Sheffield United player, because CW will have made that very clear from day one.

What I do like, apart from his long range passes (Donaldson at Villa, away game, for example), is the fact that he is always "showing" for the ball, he makes a short pass, then runs into space and shouts for it back. He always wants it and he doesn't go hiding. He might get tired towards the end of a game, but he doesn't go hiding.

The other thing I like, is his goal contributions. On Tuesday night, against QPR, the first goal chance we had was Lundstram, charging into the box and connecting with a cross, the keeper saves, only for Leon to get on the ball and shoot, and their defender managed a last minute blockage. Second half, Billy whips in a cross, it beats Leon, but Lundstram steams in behind Leon and fires in, the keeper had no chance.

While he is not, and never will be, the biggest player at the club, Lundstram has some height and a strong stocky build, and if he continues to charge into the box, he will score, because the only way you can stop a bloke that size is to bring him down, and force a penalty.

While he is not as big as Lundstram, this is the same that worked for Kieron Freeman last season, charge into the box and shoot from close range, usually (for Freeman) straight up into the roof of the net, leaving the keeper with no chance.
 
We tend to forget about the opposition doing numbers on our players - especially with the seasons start we had - we're there (and Wilder) to be studied. Coutts's possession stuff was good and eventually creates the short pass for Duffys dribbling. However put top players on Duffy and they stop our game - he doesn't get the space to create the openings.
However with Lundstrum his game is the long pass - so give him the target to hit, then the openings should come. The long pass is more difficult to achieve and defend but with a speed merchant on the wing so it should be more effective. It does then allow us to sit back and soak up pressure - if the defence is good enough.
The marauding CB's is a great tactic - but maybe not for sitting back and soaking up pressure. Bash,Joc and the 2 FB's have half an eye for the marauding run when we're supposed to be soaking up pressure - that half an eye - with Championship level opposition is enough to distract them from both soaking or maruading and we concede a long distance potshot like Tuesdays.
Lundstrum could well prove to be the player of the season if Brooks gets back to his self, as we could have another TC/Woodie scenario where TC's 60 yard passes from one box to the other on the break - 1-nil. woody.
 
So Lundstram scores and mom tues n is sub today mm..doesnt wilder always say who has the shirt be it injuries or suspensions will keep it if they play well..its up to the others to win it back....Except Lundstram apparently....Adkins be laughing tonite ffs
 
Lundstram has to start on Tuesday now.

Evans has one of the worst midfield performances I’ve seen this season.

He’s a good player though and he will improve but last night we needed a forward pass and him and Leonard didn’t offer that.
