Long needs to go

By the time long is 30 he will be a great goalkeeper but as it stands he's a youngster with mistakes in him and he will cost us points over the season.

We need a keeper who has been there and done it

I reckon we should get Joe Hart in....he'll be available soon...

That'd be a backward move...
for SUFC.

Pep won't be standing for Hart's performances too long, if he's banking on winning at least the PL, a better goalkeeper is required (someone who can play to Guardiola's instructions) at The Etihad.

Am I the only one who's seen very little so far to make GL a "great" goalkeeper?
Who are you comparing him to in the terms of goalkeeping greats?

Buffon?
Schmeichel?
Neuer?

They're the "Greats" ... if not better than "Great"

I want a goalkeeper who's name is first on the teamsheet, not just numerically.

I've just got this image in mi head of Long and Hart sharing shampoo in the showers...

You cannot unsee that image....

George playing the Jimmy Somerville role in the Smalltown Boy video...

Let's all take a look...

What a great tune that is. They never bettered it. Occasionally when I'm out in London people look at me like they recognise me and I've been trying to work out who they think I am. I've just realised.

The best two managers we have had in recent history had good goalkeepers

Basset had several
Kelly Tracey and Mel rees are still the best 3 I've seen

Don't think it's any coincidence we had successful sides under those managers and that since warnock left we have had some right shite in goal

Having threads on here about how you feel George is not up to the mark is almost a self fulfilling prophesy. It was noticeable last season when he had harsh criticism his confidence dipped and was replaced by Howard in the team. Later, when Howard's form dipped and George re-instated, He received more praise and support and he got better and better.

Confidence plays such a big part in a goalkeeper's ability. Try helping the lad again, he's still only young and with the right support he will be a really good keeper in time. Please also take into account that he is playing behind a new defence line-up and has almost no pre-season practice due to injury.

That's something we don't have much of..

John Foster?

No idea who he is. But if he looks like Jimmy Sommerville, yes.

...he's one of the one's in the video who is not Jimmy Sommerville :)

And a new GK needs bringing in before the window shuts.

Disagree massively. There's a fair argument to say that we could do with a more experienced Number 1 but George is, at the very worst, a capable understudy with the potential to improve. Made a magnificent save Saturday to keep us in with a chance. It was our lack of cutting edge at the other end that costs us. New left winger needed urgently.

George is as good as you get in this league.
When the England goalkeeper is Joe Hart that says everything about the standard of goalkeepers nowadays.
If Tufty rated that Northhampton kid he would be here now.
Long did ok Saturday pulled off a worldie to keep us in the game.
There isnt a keeper in the bottom two leagues who dosent have a flap at crosses.
The Championship and Premier have a large contingent of overseas keepers most of them are garbage and they aint cheap.
Be patient with Long hes going the right way

id invest heavily in a decent gk if we get the adams money.

send george out on loan and let some other team 'give him time'

We have a promotion to get

Chris Wilder’s blind-spot - please open your eyes Chris and have a look between the sticks - in fact , put your boots on and take a few shots from outside the box against George with a couple of distracting defenders in the way. You'll soon see what we mean.

Long had little chance with the goal and made a fantastic save to stop it going to 2-0. Our complete inability to test Mark Howard (an inferior keeper to Long) is a bigger issue.

If Hussey wasn’t new, he’d be getting far more abuse than Long for some of those awful deliveries with that “wand” of a left foot. Done was completely ineffective. Clarke missed a sitter. Sharp wasn’t in the game. But let’s hammer a young improving ‘keeper who with that save, probably contributed the best moment of individual quality of any of our players.

Exactly right.
By the logic his supporters argue it will be another 5 seasons before he reaches his peak.
Put good money on us staying in Division 3 till at least then.

Not being at his peak doesn’t mean he’s not good enough for League 1. He’s better than a fair few League 1 ‘keepers already. In fact, he’s better than Bolton’s for a start.

p.s. Did anyone see the highlights of the Shrewsbury game? I know some have suggested Leutwiler before but on that showing, give me George all day long.

The same liability who finished last season with the second highest average match rating above a 20 goal striker and double the motm awards of anyone else in the team?

We used to have a song about George Long

“He dives to the left

He dives to the right

That lad George Long

Shags 10 birds a night”

Didn’t realise all 10 were the wives of posters on here!

I'm not a fan of Long as some in here know, but he was totally blameless for the goal today. He was beaten by a good shot bang in the right position, any blame should be directed at the defenders who were slow to attack the ball and gave their guy too long to pick his spot (IMO).

Even that might be harsh on the defenders. The lad hit it first time on the volley and hit it exceptionally well. It’s not like he had time to take a touch and then strike it (which is what most of our players would have no doubt tried to do). It happens occasionally. Headed clearances shouldn’t ideally be headed to that area so that’s probably the only criticism I have on the goal from our point of view.

If the only goals you concede a superb volleys from over 20 yards, you’ll be alright. Well, so long as you can muster the odd effort on goal at the other end which we couldn’t.

While I disagree with many of the opinions regarding George. I can't help but feel he isn't confident enough, can't command his defence and does ultimately flap like a chicken seeing colonel Saunders. He needs some form of competition. He's sat high in the clouds knowing there's nobody else threatening his position. And it needs to change, if I'm honest, I'm surprised wilder hasn't addressed this already. And I'm sure he will do now. Can't all be blamed on George though. May have helped the cause if our strike force could hit a barn door from a metre away.

Colonel Saunders? If only Paddys was here with the photoshop……

If this bile of which you speak was being hurled at him at games I would agree with you but it isn`t.
This is a forum for opinions to be expressed and like it or not unless someone is a plantpot those opinions won`t always blow smoke up a players arse because he plays for our club.
Opinion is clearly divided on here as to whether Long is or is not good enough to be the first choice keeper for a supposedly promotion chasing club.
That`s fine, that`s the point of arguing these issues. As previously stated it`s not personal. I`m sure Long is a great guy and he`s one of our own etc. However,in my book that counts for diddly squat where the best needs of the team are concerned.

Agree with the overall sentiment of your post (re this being the place for opinions, positive or negative) but not that he doesn’t get abuse at games. I’ve heard plenty of people giving him all sorts of stick at games for the slightest of errors. It seems like some just have to have 1 figure of hate in the team at all times. Not necessarily you, but some of our support.

Otherwise, yes, I agree that if people have concerns re George this is the place to vent them. What I Don’t get though is why people are citing Saturday as an example of his incompetence? He was beaten by a very good strike. Made 1 superb save. He hasn’t cost us points on Saturday and frankly, I can’t remember the last time he did.

oh and he's also completely dependent on his left foot, he shits himself when it comes on his right Never forget when it came on his right and he completely misjudged and it ended up in the back of his net, it had been coming all game. Typical thing for him to do. Kicking too, how many times does he kick it straight out of play? But he was born in Sheffield so shall we let him off
Can you just remind me when this unforgettable event occurred?

I can't remember it at all, but I do accept that it may well have been in a game that I didn't go to.

Can't remember which game and not sure how I can find out. Will have a look now.

Who do you fancy then Cech,De Gea, Bercovic because outside the Premier except I hate to say Westwood there's a lot of bad keepers about.
When did George cost us the points?
Can you name me one?
